Stress and the Workplace Every work environment has certain stress level inherent in its modus operandi, and how employees react to the different situations is likewise varied. Many theories try to explain an employee’s attitude can alter the expected negative reaction to workplace stress. These broad concept of identifying “moderators” can be simplified by considering if the individual employee has a type A or B personality, his or her locus of control, hardiness, and self-esteem. People in the type A group tend to be more aggressive in pursuing their goals, noticeably impatient, and very time urgent. They always feel the need to double up their effort and speed to achieve their goals. On the other hand, is the type B personalities who are very cautious, patient, and good at working on long term goals even if the results looks bleak at the first instance. These two different traits react to stressful work demands differently. While Type As tend to be very good at meeting deadlines, they do not react well when they feel being slowed by other team members. In other words, generally they do not make good team players. The Type B might be a slower and takes so much times to achieve certain goals but he/she can fit very well with others and tends to make them better by the virtue of his/her patience. Using the person-job fit model, individuals with no patience for failure or people dragging them can be put in jobs with less or no human interface. Work related stress can be best handled by an individual with patience and decorum (p. 471). The Stress Management Framework used by most organizations aims the secondary intervention on the individual and how he/she reacts to the situation. Not all stressors or strains can be eliminated especially if the nature of the work demands it. Instead, employers redirect efforts to make the individual employees strong enough to deal with it

Schmied and Lawler, (1986) published a study in order to examine the impact of hardiness, Type A personality and stress on secretarial working women. Demographics of age, education, and marital status, number of children, race and religion were also taken into account, but this section will focus on only the results pertaining to age and hardiness. The sample for this study was a group of female secretaries, who were aged from twenty-one years to fifty-nine years. There were one hundred and ten questionnaires sent out, with a response rate of 74.5%, yielding a final sample of eighty-two women. Each woman was to have at least two years of college education. Hardiness was measured using the standard five questionnaires, broken down into three subcomponents of hardiness. The Alienation from Work Scale and the Alienation from Self Scale were used to measure commitment, The Security Scale was used to measure challenge, and finally The External Locus of Control Scale and The Powerlessness Scale were used to measure the control aspect of hardiness. The Score from each scale was converted to a z-score, and then summed to give a single hardiness score. The higher the score, the less hardiness one possessed for all scales. I believe I have the capacity to maintain work stress and stay positive. It is because I am a positive thinker. From my experience, when I was perceiving inequity or facing stresses from work, I tried to restore equity by extra effort and stay focused on my goal. Therefore, these personality traits help me become a team player. Besides, I have high ethical standards which drives me to embody integrity in my actions. Honesty, integrity are very important personality traits to managers because they have responsibility of financial stewardship. Managers who has high ethical standards are likely to establish a code of ethic to guide team members’ behavior and less likely to manipulate shareholders’ assets. Individuals’ action are value drive, if I am a manager, I value company’s benefit over personal interest and I believe my ethical behaviors helps me to better manage others by building a trustful relationship with my team
