Delivering health care to patients involves a team of health professionals from different disciplines. So, in order for different professionals to work effectively as a team, teamwork is essential. However, in a team it is comprised of individuals with different strengths and challenges that will influence teamwork. An individual’s unique strengths can help facilitate teamwork as their strengths will help them function well within the team. Whereas an individual’s challenges may impact the effectiveness of teamwork, but addressing the challenges can prepare them to work efficiently on a team. will also affect the team unless I address it. Therefore, the process of teamwork involves more than just people working together as the members’ individual characteristics also contribute. In order to work as a team, each member is essential in contributing to the team’s success; thus, the strengths of each member of the team will enable effective interprofessional collaboration. So, my strengths of conscientiousness and commitment will help contribute to the process for successful teamwork. Conscientiousness will be valued in a team because it is reflected in individuals who are hardworking and reliable (Morgeson, Reider, & Campion, 2005). Being conscientious, I understand the accountability my contributions have on team success, so I am willing to take on any roles and perform the role to the best of my capability. Recently, I worked in a ten-member group, in which I received a role that I did not initially wanted. Despite not receiving the role I wanted, it did not upset me and instead I worked harder to perform the role as it was important in helping the team complete its goals. In addition, conscientiousness involves being task focused and cooperative; thus, I know that I need to perform my responsibilities and work with others in order for the team to meet its objectives (Morgeson, Reider, & Campion, 2005). Also, the other members of the team do not have to be concerned that I am not contributing to the team as my strength of being conscientious will help the team become more efficient in accomplishing its goals. Therefore, conscientiousness is an important characteristic working in an interprofessional team as members will work hard to perform their roles and responsibilities and work cooperatively with the other members in order for the team to be effective. Furthermore, my commitment will be a strength to an interprofessional team as commitment will encourage the members to work collaboratively, meet the team goals, and achieve a quality outcome since they are essential teamwork competencies (Leggat, 2007).
The interprofessional team will involve members from different professions, so I am committed to working together with the members by assisting and providing support in order to improve team relations. Thus, commitment improves team performance as it helps unite the members to work together to meet their goals. In addition, there are goals that the team has to meet, and each member must be committed in working together to achieve the goals. Based on commitment, I would do what is needed to efficiently carry out the team objectives, such as taking on certain roles or providing support to others. So, commitment will be appreciated by the team as individuals are dedicated to doing what it takes to help accomplish the team’s purpose. Moreover, my commitment enables me to discuss and reflect on mistakes in order to ensure a quality outcome Leggat, 2007). When I worked with a group of students from different majors, it was challenging because of the differences in opinions and the disorganization. Although each member’s strengths may contribute to the teamwork of an interprofessional team, members’ challenges may also weaken it. Thus, my personal challenges of unskilled communication and mistrust will not be regarded well in an interprofessional team unless I address it in order to prepare myself to work on a team. Communication is an important skill considered by teams as it facilitates the achievement of team objectives and increase team satisfaction (Leggat, 2007). However, lack of communication in a team will negatively affect teamwork as it leads to disorganization since members are not discussing and interacting with each other, which helps to enhance team function. When I normally work in groups, I barely communicate my opinions because I thought it was insignificant and often times the other members take over the discussion. So, to address my inadequate communication, I will focus on expressing my opinions more to the team because everyone’s ideas are important as each individual holds unique knowledge and experiences that will contribute to the team’s success. In addition, besides verbal communication, written communication will help to improve my communication skills as it is easy for people to forget what is verbally discussed. Whereas with written communication, it is documented so it makes it more efficient for the team to communicate with one another and provide feedback. Therefore, addressing my communication skills by expressing my ideas more and using communication strategies will help the interprofessional team become more cooperative and effectively meet their goals. Moreover, my lack of mutual trust will be a challenge to the team as it may reduce teamwork, which helps the interprofessional team be more effective.
In addition, trust enables reciprocity and increased opportunities for shared achievement in the team (Mitchell et al., 2012). However, it can be difficult to trust others in the team because of the fear that they may not be reliable or may not properly perform their roles. In many group situations I have experienced, members often will procrastinate and do not fulfill their responsibility in which I have to complete their part because I care more about the grade. So, to address my lack of trust, team-building exercises may be helpful as it gives the team the opportunity to get to know one another personally; thus, deepens the relationship and increase trust among the members of the team. Also, as my mistrust is an internal trait rather than an external aspect, I need to address my attitude by being more openminded. In an interprofessional team, it will comprise of individuals with different characteristics and from different professions. So, I need to be accepting and trusting of other’s capability as each person have distinct knowledge and ideas that will contribute to the team. Therefore, trust is an essential characteristic as it allows the team to set and achieve goals in a harmonious, efficient manner; thus, influencing me to make an effort of addressing my trust issues through team-building exercises and staying
openminded (Mitchell et al., 2012). Each member in an interprofessional team holds great importance because their contributions help leads the team to success. Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Before this class, I was usually the one that had to do all of the work because all of my team members did not do anything. Because of this, my skills involving other people were extremely weak and fragile. At first, I had a hard time trusting people with my grade, due to my prior experience with other teams. The process to fully trust my team was very stressful and painful though. At times it was hard to merge completely different ideas into one, or come up with times that everyone could meet. However, after getting to know my team for an entire quarter, and understanding their work ethic and personality, I learned to trust my grade with them. I realized I am working with responsible people who will do quality work because their grade is just as important to them as it is important to me. Selecting to maximize my motivation and performance in a teamwork environment (Carpenter & Erdogan, 2012) I must stay focus to repair aspects of my weaknesses. Selflessness is main weaknesses. This is a weakness because striving intensely to meet my word can be too overwhelming, especially if request is made from a loved one doing. Being too selfless is dangerous because it can leave me without the ability to help myself or others because of trying to carry burdens that are not my own in the name of empathy.
