Introduction Reading and writing are most essential developmental skills in our lives and it is important that us as teachers play a significant role in teaching learners how to read and write properly. Reading and writing correlate with each other and research has found that when learners read extensively they become better writers. Reading different types of genres helps children to learn text structures and language that they can then transfer to their own writing and it also provides learners with prior knowledge they can use when writing. . There are certain stages that can improve learner’s reading and writing that needs to be followed regularly.

The reading process is a transitive process which involves complex negotiations between text and reader when is shaped by reader’s knowledge of a topic, purpose for reading and language culturally expectations based on experiences. it is the active process of understanding print and graphic text. Pre-reading
According to Ringler and Weber (1984), pre- reading stage serves as enabling activity because they provide learners with necessary background knowledge of the text and also give them an opportunity to organize the activity and comprehend the material. Reading is not just reading words on a paper. It is a process that uses many resources in the brain and the use of strategies. Teachers have to use all six areas of reading to help students learn how to read, what strategies to use when reading, how to interpret a text and many more. Reading is a complex process and this paper will describe the six areas of reading.
Prereading could be incorporated by promoting reading strategies. I would do this by pulling images from their text and presenting them in a powerpoint. We would talk about the setting, time period, and other notable features. I would use this time to introduce some of the relevant academic language. A reading strategy that I would incorporate is reading aloud by the teacher. Throughout this time, I would pause for questions. I would keep the passages short and also model metacognition. After the lesson, I would incorporate summarizing, discussion, or simulation as my post-reading activity. Students who struggle with reading seem to understand better if the book is read-aloud to them. The teachers make the book more interesting which helps the student comprehend the text better. Teachers ask open ended questions during read aloud. This is important because it helps the students understand why we are reading what we are reading. Also, during read alouds the teacher will introduce new vocabulary or new strategies to help with understanding reading. Modeling by the teacher is the most important piece of read alouds. Students understand more of how a good reader thinks and understand the text the more it is modeled and the only way to be properly modeled is through read alouds.

In the chapter five, learning to spell. it shows how children developed their knowledge about spelling in five different stage, emergent spelling, within- word Pattern spelling, Syllables and Affixes spelling, and last not least Derivational Relation spelling. in chapter 11 Scaffolding Children's Writing development has also a step of how children develop their writing process. there are five stage of writing, prewriting, drafting, revising, and publishing, and there are six trait of effective writing, idea, organization, voice, words choice, sentence fluency and mechanic.
To be strategic means to use a careful plan of action intended to accomplish a specific target goal or outcome (Company, 2002). Ultimately our goal in reading is to gain knowledge and understanding through comprehension of text we present ourselves with for lifelong learning and enjoyment. To be a strategic reader means the use of a variety of intentional cognitive skills and strategies to read for a purpose. Strategic readers have the ability to adjust their reading for different purposes and reading tasks, understanding when it is necessary to tend to every detail and when it is appropriate to read quickly for enjoyment (Tovani, 2000). Becoming a strategic reader involves two main aspects, first the reader must become more automatic in using strategies as well as come to be more deliberate and aware. These aspects can be taught through direct explanation and modeling (Guthrie & Alvermann, 1999).
I will preface this literacy narrative by a warning: this is not, in any way, an essay about my positive academic experiences with reading and writing. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE reading, but this fondness was not rooted in me because of school. Writing, on the other hand, has been the bane of my scholastic journey since the start of my high school years. Reading has always been a core subject taught throughout any student’s educational life; in the earlier years, we learned the basics of writing. For some students, it’s an exciting time, figuring out what goes into the story books we read and finally learning how words work. However, the story was different for me. As a child, it was intimidating when I notice that I didn’t catch on as fast as the other kids. Sometimes learning involves compensating for the skills one lacks. It’s a journey; here’s mine.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. In their academic article, Reading and Learning Strategies: Recommendations for the 21st Century, the authors have found that there are several models that will assist this group. The first would be to choose program models that emphasize cognitive development on the part of the learner, while emphasizing their strengths. The next of these models would be to emphasize the transfer and modification of skills across all the academic disciplines. Another model, and one of the most important is to emphasize the students flexible use of any processes that may be used in a strategy.
