Introduction Reading and writing are most essential developmental skills in our lives and it is important that us as teachers play a significant role in teaching learners how to read and write properly. Reading and writing correlate with each other and research has found that when learners read extensively they become better writers. Reading different types of genres helps children to learn text structures and language that they can then transfer to their own writing and it also provides learners with prior knowledge they can use when writing. . There are certain stages that can improve learner’s reading and writing that needs to be followed regularly.

They have to check spelling. Examine capitalization and punctuation; follow grammar and usage convention to ensure their ideas well and to ensure their ideas confirm legibility.
2. Strategies on how to improve reading
The reading process is a transitive process which involves complex negotiations between text and reader when is shaped by reader’s knowledge of a topic, purpose for reading and language culturally expectations based on experiences. it is the active process of understanding print and graphic text. One thing you can learn about teaching reading is that they are different types and techniques of reading that are suitable for your learners.
Pre-reading
According to Ringler and Weber (1984), pre- reading stage serves as enabling activity because they provide learners with necessary background knowledge of the text and also give them an opportunity to organize the activity and comprehend the material. During pre-reading the teacher can ask learners what they already know about the title of the text. The learners has to share their background knowledge necessary for comprehension of the text and the teacher will also have to make students to be aware of the type of the text they will be
Reading is not just reading words on a paper. It is a process that uses many resources in the brain and the use of strategies. Teachers have to use all six areas of reading to help students learn how to read, what strategies to use when reading, how to interpret a text and many more. Reading is a complex process and this paper will describe the six areas of reading.
Prereading could be incorporated by promoting reading strategies. I would do this by pulling images from their text and presenting them in a powerpoint. We would talk about the setting, time period, and other notable features. I would use this time to introduce some of the relevant academic language. A reading strategy that I would incorporate is reading aloud by the teacher. Throughout this time, I would pause for questions. I would keep the passages short and also model metacognition. After the lesson, I would incorporate summarizing, discussion, or simulation as my post-reading activity. Students who struggle with reading seem to understand better if the book is read-aloud to them. The teachers make the book more interesting which helps the student comprehend the text better. Teachers ask open ended questions during read aloud. This is important because it helps the students understand why we are reading what we are reading. Also, during read alouds the teacher will introduce new vocabulary or new strategies to help with understanding reading. Modeling by the teacher is the most important piece of read alouds. Students understand more of how a good reader thinks and understand the text the more it is modeled and the only way to be properly modeled is through read alouds.
in both chapters five and eleven it demonstrate how children developed their strategies of writing and spelling during certain stages . In the chapter five, learning to spell. it shows how children developed their knowledge about spelling in five different stage, emergent spelling, within- word Pattern spelling, Syllables and Affixes spelling, and last not least Derivational Relation spelling. in chapter 11 Scaffolding Children's Writing development has also a step of how children develop their writing process. there are five stage of writing, prewriting, drafting, revising, and publishing, and there are six trait of effective writing, idea, organization, voice, words choice, sentence fluency and mechanic.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
To be strategic means to use a careful plan of action intended to accomplish a specific target goal or outcome (Company, 2002). Ultimately our goal in reading is to gain knowledge and understanding through comprehension of text we present ourselves with for lifelong learning and enjoyment. To be a strategic reader means the use of a variety of intentional cognitive skills and strategies to read for a purpose. Strategic readers have the ability to adjust their reading for different purposes and reading tasks, understanding when it is necessary to tend to every detail and when it is appropriate to read quickly for enjoyment (Tovani, 2000). Becoming a strategic reader involves two main aspects, first the reader must become more automatic in using strategies as well as come to be more deliberate and aware. These aspects can be taught through direct explanation and modeling (Guthrie & Alvermann, 1999).

Children also need to enhance their vocabulary. A practice that helps with this is for teachers to select different genres of readings mixed with questions asked before and after the text. Text not only should have different genres but also different types of wring styles formal and informal. When reading, children need to have good fluency, and phonemic awareness. One more factor to a comprehensive literacy approach is written expressive language. Written expressive language has two components; mechanics and composition/creativity. Mechanics involve the “how do you put your thoughts on paper?” A good writer has a defined knowledge of: sentence structure, paragraph structure, spelling, and handwriting. Composition/creativity involves the “how do you compose and organize for writing?” This is similar to comprehension because it includes oral language, world knowledge, visualization, and inner dialogue. The last factor to a comprehensive approach to literacy is instruction. Instruction has two components, opportunities to read and write and direct instruction. Direct instruction makes sure that the needed skills are taught. Reading and writing are two of the main features of literacy education for both children and out-of-school adults. Components of reading and writing are not mutually exclusive and some educators argue that reading paves way for writing. Therefore, it is crucial to develop reading programs are strong and skill building. Reading processes for children and adults are different but some practices are applicable to both populations despite developmental differences. Therefore, reading programs should take into consideration the literacy program philosophy about reading, unique characteristics of adult learners, strategies to be used and literacy environment.
There are many articles on reading and strategies for teaching reading and reading skills to younger students, while at the same time there is a strong need for this information for adults and those who are in or entering college. In their academic article, Reading and Learning Strategies: Recommendations for the 21st Century, the authors have found that there are several models that will assist this group. The first would be to choose program models that emphasize cognitive development on the part of the learner, while emphasizing their strengths. The next of these models would be to emphasize the transfer and modification of skills across all the academic disciplines. Another model, and one of the most important is to emphasize the students flexible use of any processes that may be used in a strategy.
