The Dick’s Sporting Goods commercial was ranked number 9 in the most effective commericals. The commercial shows the different struggles that athletes in training face for the USA Olympics. The audience for this commercial is intended for both genders. Although the stereotype is that sports are usually for males, this commercial has a fair representation of both male and female athletes. Many of the female athletes shown are training in hard sports such as boxing and lifting weights. This commercial also included disabled male and female athletes which can also serve to be another audience. This commercial was promoting Dick’s Sporting Good athletic attire. The advertiser did not include an unequal representation of genders, also the commercial didn’t use gender stereotypes to please the audience. The girls are then asked to name female inventors and they answer with “I’ve never heard of any female inventors in schools”. The commercial then goes on to list about 10 names of female inventors which were a surprise to me as well. There is no product being promoted in this commercial, the advertisers are informing the audience of women inventors. In doing more than that just listing female names, it’s showing the viewers how much women have been understated particularly in school. It’s a shame that schools don’t teach students about successful women as much as they do with successful men, especially since it’s where we first become socialized. I have examined and analyzed the COVERGIRL™ NatureLuxe advertisement that uses common feminine stereotypes. In this advertisement, COVERGIRL™, which runs in Seventeen magazines, targets women through their choices of colors, fonts, and images used. Certain stereotypes are used; such as, those who are more feminine tend to prefer lighter, happier colors, such as pink. Also, the use of a celebrity, who many young women look to as an icon, assists in the advertisement of the COVERGIRL™ product. COVERGIRL™, more than likely, is able to successfully market their lip-gloss product in the United States by using common gender stereotypes to show femininity and how those, mainly women, should be presented in today’s society.
This proves how the phrase like a girl should not be used as an insult because many girls who hit puberty question themselves if they are strong enough to do the same things men do. This commercial represents how as a women hits puberty their confidence shouldn’t lower. Hitting puberty should be a positive thing not a negative thing. When men hit puberty they are consider stronger and this should be the same for women. Women who have went through puberty could reject parts of the ad because they could had gain more confidence rather than loosing it. Some males might accept parts of the ad by agreeing that the phrase like a girl applies to every girl. Not all girls are strong, run fast or throw like an athlete but that shouldn’t categorize women to fall in to the phrase like a girl. In the commercial they asked a girl what did she advice girls who were told that they were doing things like a girl. The girl said that to keep doing what your doing because even if you’re not doing it right you will get better and you shouldn’t feel discourage to be a girl. Although the commercial does show diversity in race, it does help to break traditional views of same race couples and opposite sex couples. Overall, the commercial is very set on traditional gender roles meaning that woman are caretakers and men are the providers. To try to negate some stereotypes, the commercial could keep the same scenes for each actor, but change the items they are searching for. The woman at the restaurant could be buying a television and the man at the soccer game could be buying a vacuum. This would negate traditional gender roles.
Competitive sports and risky outdoor activities have always been a favorite past time for adult men. This is one of many stereotypes that have been enclosed on most American men throughout time and for this reason many companies have used this specific stereotype to attract men into buying their products. In this commercial Toyota uses one of the many typical stereotypes placed on men and uses specific color techniques to emphasize the stereotype used in the ad. However, there are specific areas where male seem to have the predominant role and women are stuck. According to Michael Desbordes in the article “Endorsement by ‘Looks’”, American society has experienced positive changes regarding gender equality in sports, but women still face issues when it comes to sponsorships, because there are gender biases that negatively affect their image as professional athletes. Moreover, the factors that strongly influence sponsors to prefer men athletes over women have direct relationship with American society’s attitudes.
