Sports are a way for humans to have fun and to compete, even for those that are disabled. I think wanting to have a moment of where you are an average person is important to a disabled individual because these moments are only temporary. Being able to play sports is taken for granted by those that have the full ability to participate. On the other hand, there are people that wish they had the ability to participate in sports. Disabled individuals were not given the opportunity to compete in sports until the creation of enhancements. The creation of enhancements has given the disabled the feeling of being a regular person. I believe that giving disabled individuals the capabilities they once had is the goal of enhancements.

Gleiser states, “We have titanium implants in our joints, pacemakers and hearing aids, devices that redefine and extend our minds and bodies” (54). All of these devices are enhancements to help individuals that are lacking certain abilities. These enhancements were created to give people the opportunity to be a regular person in society and perform regular actions. Peace states, “When active I am transformed from being thought of as a pathetic human in a wheelchair whose life sucks into an average person”. Having the ability to play sports gives those who have disabilities the feeling of being an average person. I believe an individual with a disability is seen as if they are in need of help because of their disability, but in reality, they can do the same tasks as a regular person if not better. Allowing them to play sports gives them that feeling of acceptance from society. By having enhancements allows people to gain confidence or insecurities which can be cured with the ability to perform in sports again due to these technological …show more content…
While playing sports they have a break from their disability, not having to worry about their disabilities and being able to compete and have fun playing the sport. The creation of enhancements has given the disabled the feeling of being an average person. Eventually, enhancements will be seen as normal in society as time goes by. While playing sports they are not disabled individuals they are athletes trying to compete just as any other athlete. The growth of enhancements is important because there are still disabilities that we do not know how to cure. I believe finding ways to give the disabled the feeling of self-worth is the goal of sports and enhancements for the
As a future special educator, I found the film to be most enlightening in relation to the sport as well as the equipment with accommodations provided to the players. The safety design of the special chairs was fascinating to witness since it’s constructed so the player cannot be ejected. Moreover, some players were leg amputees and those chairs were also especially fitted for safety and comfort. For the teammates that had elbow or hands amputated, I saw special endcaps or gloves being worn so they could grasp the ball and turn the wheels on their chairs. During Cavill’s episode, I observed the therapy center and all the devices that are used during the rehabilitation process. When he was taken home, his mother was also giving a tour of some assistive technology (A.T.) that was installed in the bathroom and closet. I also noticed that during the Paralympics clips in Greece, there were runners with Oscar Pistorius' running blades. As well as A.T. devices, there were glimpses of universal design in reference to the special vans with the lifts. Overall, the documentary educates a lot about the actual sport and special devices used. However, its true message is to nurture a person’s spirit and not their
Butryn believes, the challenge that is issued is whether an athlete 's ability has a dramatic change in his performance due to technology. I believe that technology should not give an athlete more ability than a regular athlete because at that point it becomes unfair to both competitors. Trivino states, “The sports practiced by athletes who have had organs or mechanical parts implanted and their desire to take part in regular athletic competitions puts sports authorities in an ethical and legal tight spot” (118). Trivino believes Authorities are put into an ethical and legal tight spot because there must be a line drawn. A line that clearly states what is and isn 't allowed to be able to take part in regular athletic competitions. I believe it becomes unfair and too much of an advantage for the athlete to use in competition. According to Trivino, “The cyberization of sport has occupied a role in medical and sport fields in recent years due to the fact that this issue calls into question the very foundations of contemporary sport,
They are human beings determined to make something good in their lives. Across the world, people with disabilities have poorer health outcomes, lower education achievements, less economic participation and higher rates of poverty than people without
The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. Peace is a multidisciplinary school teacher and scholar that uses a wheel chair and writes about the science behind disabilities and handicaps. As a physically handicapped individual, Peace is able to observe a negative portrayal of disabled persons. In his article titled, “Slippery Slopes: Media, Disability, and Adaptive Sports,” William Peace offers his own personal insight, utilizes several statistics regarding handicaps, as well as numerous rhetorical appeals in order to communicate to the “common man”
You see sports everywhere, on your TV and even your local park. The value of sports in the average American is astronomical, sports is a major priority in people’s life. Sports teaches young kids how to be successful (and not successful) at life. There is so much that goes into sports that people who never have played will never understand. With each sport there is specific skill that one must master to be good, and with that takes hours and hours of hard work. You can talk about a certain individual’s skill and capabilities that make him great, but the real value of sports lies within a person. Sports creates determination and a competiveness that can be used in other areas of life, not just sports. There are millions of kids who attempt to become professional athletes but as the level of competition increases the number of athletes decreases, very few of them ever becoming a professional athlete but they are able to take what they have learned from sports into different professions in life. When a kid spends hours in the backyard perfecting his swing it can translate to the kid spending hours of hard work in his job. Companies and business like to hire ex-athletes because they already know what kind of person they are, hardworking and
While this is not completely true, sports develop people in many ways still, some people say that “sports make me what I am today.” While it is impossible to prove exactly the way each individual takes in sports, it is seen that overall it has some positive effect. Sports are a tool of development and instead of it being a choice between sports and academics, the real answer is both and that they work together to constantly develop quality generations of people. Though problems exist, the true qualities of sports maintain the role they have in developing young ones.
There is a lack of funding as well as separate, but not equal competition for people who are older as well as people with disabilities. When people get older, there is a better chance that they will attain a disability because of the disabilities that come with age (Woods, 2011, p. 267). Research has shown that exercise can enhance a healthy lifestyle, and that can lead to a longer life. This is why there should be more sports opportunities for older people. As more and more of the population is growing older, many of the older people are starting to participate in physical activities (Coakley, 2015, p. 311). This demonstrates that if older athletes are still able to play sports and be active, they are able to be healthier. Also, with more participation in sport, they dispel the stereotype that older people are too “fragile” to play sports and exercise. Since this minority has been growing in numbers, there are more people who are accepting and wanting older people to participate in exercise in sports. After all, one day, the younger generation will be in the older generation’s place and want to be
...beld person as equal and for society to take responsibility for their ignorance and become more open minded and accepting of those who may have less functioning ability or mental awareness of what is going on around themselves. Only recently has the (dis)Abeld community been given the spotlight through television shows such as Bones, or House, Or CSI have those with disabilities been given a platform to push over society’s negative stereotypes of ignorance and shown how despite limitations, those with limitations can indeed live happy and healthy lives. Despite much of the stigma that still exists towards those who are (dis)Abled, much success has been made and continues to be made because of the selfless determination of a select few who are determined not to be restrained by society’s ignorance and to make a difference in the world around them and for others.
should never be defined or recognized by their disability but rather on their strengths and how far each
As a young child, I remember how my grandfather's disability affected my life. I don't think that I even knew what the purpose of his wheelchair was. To me, it was just a toy, just another toy that my cousins and I could play with.
The people with disabilities are portrayed as hardworking. They have people surrounding them that are accepting and encourage them to do their best. The support helps them build up courage to overcome their disability. It can take years, but the effort will not be
This is false because just like everything else in the world some people are more privileged than others. This is what makes life, life. In the future there are four main advantages that enhancements will have. They will increase cognitive capabilities of human being (for example, increases in attention, alertness, the speed with which information is processed by the human brain, and improvements in memory), they will extend the duration of our lives, they will compress morbidity and disability near the end of life, and finally they will enhance the immune system (Buchanan, 2011.) Having competition between people is common human nature and enhancements would just make competition better. For athletes, if every athlete was permitted to use biomedical enhancements the playing field would be level again instead of them using it illegally when others do not use it. By using enhancements, sports as we know them would be out of this world. They would bring so much entertainment to our lives and only make our leisure and social lives better. Overall, our lives would be better by having better production, living healthier, living longer and being
“Every year around 4.2 million special needs participants attend Special Olympics events around the world.” (Special Olympics). Special Olympics gives individuals with disabilities an opportunity to enjoy participating in sports in the same ways as any other athlete. Special Olympics shows the accomplishments, skill and the bravery of the athletes. Athletics, through Special Olympics, make a positive impact on the lives of those with special needs allowing them to lead active lives.
Secondly, performance-enhancement impacts the future generation of upcoming athletes. Professional athletes are role models to many world-wide. They are a symbol of inspiration and motivation to young athletes. Upcoming professionals look up to their determination and love of fair and true sportsmanship in successful athletes. Allowing performance enhancing drugs in ...
Human enhancement is any attempt to temporarily or permanently overcome the current limitations of the human body through natural or artificial means. It is in our human nature that we somehow increase our life expectancy, become stronger, fearless, independent and smarter. It is no surprise we turn to all sorts of technologies – neurotechnology, nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology – to improve human performances. While they might improve our performances and abilities, their use raises serious health, ethical and economic issues, furthermore, not enough is known about the long-term consequences.
