In sports, there are always rules and regulations to what an athlete can ingest or use. They create these rules and regulations so competitors don 't have a physical or psychological advantage over their competition. These restrictions usually pertain to illegal drugs and substances that would give that athlete a boost in their performance. I personally agree with José Luís Pérez Triviño, a senior lecturer in philosophy of law, who believes technological developments, as well as many minor substances, will create transgenic athletes. D.A. Baker, explains that “prosthetics should be compared to some standard measure”. Prosthetics and technological enhancements should be considered as a restriction, considering it is an advantage just like …show more content…
Butryn believes, the challenge that is issued is whether an athlete 's ability has a dramatic change in his performance due to technology. I believe that technology should not give an athlete more ability than a regular athlete because at that point it becomes unfair to both competitors. Trivino states, “The sports practiced by athletes who have had organs or mechanical parts implanted and their desire to take part in regular athletic competitions puts sports authorities in an ethical and legal tight spot” (118). Trivino believes Authorities are put into an ethical and legal tight spot because there must be a line drawn. A line that clearly states what is and isn 't allowed to be able to take part in regular athletic competitions. I believe it becomes unfair and too much of an advantage for the athlete to use in competition. According to Trivino, “The cyberization of sport has occupied a role in medical and sport fields in recent years due to the fact that this issue calls into question the very foundations of contemporary sport, …show more content…
Trivino claims gene doping is the main purpose is to improve the physical performance of athletes. Gene doping is on the list of banned substances, it is in the same category as anabolic steroids. Gene doping is an unfair way for an athlete to physically perform better because they don 't have to work as hard as other that work their butts off to be able to perform at that level. It is very similar to anabolic steroids because the use of the steroids gives that person a greater amount of strength without working for it. Not only does gene doping gives the athlete an unfair advantage to their physical abilities, but also has many cons that could put the individual 's health at risk. Wells states, “Risks associated with gene doping fall into two main areas. Firstly, the product and the procedures for delivery of the product carry risks. Secondly, the uncontrolled expression of the genes may in themselves be harmful” (627). Wells believes, that gene doping can be harmful and has many unknown risks on the effects gene doping will have on an individual 's body. I believe that gene doping shouldn 't be
Professional athletes, throughout history, have been exalted for their outstanding abilities and achievements in sports. Unfortunately, many athletes have turned to anabolic steroids in order to give them an edge, a boost their athletic performance. Starting with the 1954 World Weightlifting Championships, where the Soviets unexpectedly dominated their lifting classes with the use of steroids, it has become increasingly popular among athletes to cheat with the help of this drug. Although the appeal to steroid use is evident when observing how it increases someone’s athletic abilities, many users fail to consider the detrimental side effects of the drug. Also, in my opinion, athletes should be expected to perform based upon their natural abilities, opposed to abilities enhanced by anabolic steroids. Ultimately, anabolic steroids should continue to be illegal in professional sports due to their major health risks and the unfair advantage they serve players.
Steroids are ruining sports in the United States, and they are also going to ruin future athletes if the United States does not put a stop to it. Many young athletes in the United States are taking performance enhancing drugs because they see that professional athletes are doing it and getting results. These teenagers are using steroids because they want to look muscular and fit, but they are not aware of the negative effects steroids have on their bodies. Young athletes do not know that they are not only risking their careers but also their bodies. Steroids may make a person look muscular and fit, but at the same time, it is ruining their heart. Steroids also cause people to act differently and do foolish things like using other drugs. Parents can prevent steroid use by teaching their children about it at a young age and staying involved in their children’s sport lives. Steroids have ruined professional careers. They ruined Lance Armstrong, Marion Jones, and Barry Bonds’ careers and almost ruined Alex Rodriguez’s career. Professional athletes use steroids to improve their performance which is cheating. The game is not fair if someone is performing better by using drugs, and everybody should be performing with what they got. There are many different ways to achieve what they want in fair and healthier way. Many high school athletes are using steroids in the United States. They are not doing it under a doctor’s supervision; therefore, they are ruining their bodies without them knowing. Many of these athletes are looking at the outcome only and not what there are doing to their bodies in addition to getting stronger, muscular, and fit. All governing sport bodies in the United States need to take steroid testing seriously and give at...

Each year athlete’s ability to perform seems to increase by leaps and bounds. Some reasons for this can be attributed to better training methods, better conditioning techniques, and better over all health of the athlete. While most situations involve one or more of the previously scenarios, some athletes always seem to take it to a step further. They engage in a process called blood doping. This procedure does increase physical performance and athletic ability, but potentially may do more harm than good.
Anabolic steroids are a group of muscle building chemicals, which are synthetic versions of the male hormone, testosterone. Developed in the 1930’s, they were prescribed to aid in muscle tissue repair by those who had undergone surgery or had degenerative diseases. Now the patients do not only use them but also athletes. Starting in the 1940’s steroids were introduced into sports. Steroids were one of the main reasons that Russia’s 1952 Olympic weightlifting team came out with pile of medals. With these results other nations thought their competitors should have the same advantage, and the use of steroids spread like wildfire.(NIDA pg 2) But now steroids are illegal to use if not prescribed by a physician, and have been banned by nearly all-athletic organizations, both professional and amateur.
Abstract: Since the beginning of sports competition, athletes have always looked for some kind of an edge over their competitors. They will do whatever it takes to be one of the elite and that includes injecting supplements into their bodies to make them bigger, stronger, and faster. Steroid use is probably one of the most common drug misuses in sports competition. Athletes found that with anabolic steroids one could become a better athlete twice as fast. Not until 1975 was the drug first banned from Olympic competition because of the health risks it produced. Shortly thereafter, the rest of the sports world did not allow anabolic steroids as well. With the use of steroids no longer permitted athletes began to look for other alternatives. On the rise is two substances called creatine and androstenedione, both of which are sold over the counter. These two performance enhancers have only had minimal testing done on them, excluding the long-term effects, simply because they haven't been around long enough. Creatine and androstenedione have been said to produce results like steroids without the side effects. The truth is they do produce side effects and irregular muscle growth. By banning the use of performance enhancing drugs, just like steroids, sports competition will have a much healthier and fairer environment to participate in.
Imagine a drug. This drug can make you super athletic and give you that muscular body that people worldwide always see on TV and admire. Would you take it? If you scared of being caught using a steroid type drug, do not worry, this drug will not fail you that easily. This drug will not be caught in most PED tests and the chances of someone being caught are extremely low. It has the power of a steroid but it can make it look like you have taken no drug at all. Would you take this drug with super powers? Well, stop dreaming buddy, because this drug with hall of fame talent is real. People, please give a warm welcome to the next generation of steroids, the one and only, the human growth hormone. This protein acronymed HGH, is a natural hormone found in all of us: raising the concentration of glucose, an important sugar and free fatty acid for providing our bodies with energy to function properly. In humans and other animals Hgh plays an important role in, cell reproduction, regenerating or recovering muscles, most notably growth. For the moment, most of the highest forms of competition such as the Olympics, the Major League Baseball(MLB), National Football League(NFL), and the NCAA have banned using HGH as a supplement. Despite this ban, many players are currently debating against their league officials to legalize this drug of youth. HGH-- dangerous, useless, deceiving--should be banned in sports.
Athletes are always searching for ways to enhance their performance. Recently, beginning in the 1950s, that search has included the use of illegal substances like steroids and growth hormones. Illegal substances have been used widely by athletes in hop es of achieving the desired Olympic gold medal or multi-million dollar contract. Some nations, for example the late East Germany in the 1970s and 1980s, have mandated the use of steroids by their athletes. The downside of using those illegal substances is that because they are illegal, getting caught using them can lead to losing that coveted gold medal, a lifetime ban from sports, and a total loss of honor and dignity. This is why the search is now on to find some legal means of enhancing athletic per formance.
Professional athletes want to impress the audience, as well as to obtain and/or keep their spot in the people’s view. A common solution would be to use potent, relatively unnoticeable performance enhancing substances. Most, if not all, of which are banned, and can result in the offender to be put through appropriate
Every athlete dreams of becoming the best player in their sport. For most athletes, this dream was created in their childhood watching their favorite player perform at great levels to achieve success. Most athletes will stop at anything to achieve success, even if that means breaking the rules. An athlete whether the biggest, fastest, or strongest, will always look for something that will give them and extra edge over everybody else, even if that means performance enhancing drugs. With new records being broken day by day, I believe performance-enhancing drugs should be legal in all professional sports.

Drug use in sports is considered cheating. Doping has many historical backgrounds, but now it is on a larger scale in order to maximiz...
Doping can be strictly defined as the consumption of any substance (whether food or drug) to improve one's performance. This definition can be applied in a variety of situations, from college students drinking coffee in order to stay awake to athletes who take steroids to make them stronger. The problem with doping is where one draws the line. The drugs used in doping often have detrimental effects to one's health, both mental and physical. In the short run these drugs improve one's performance, but in the long run they can kill.
Gleiser states, “We have titanium implants in our joints, pacemakers and hearing aids, devices that redefine and extend our minds and bodies” (54). All of these devices are enhancements to help individuals that are lacking certain abilities. These enhancements were created to give people the opportunity to be a regular person in society and perform regular actions. Peace states, “When active I am transformed from being thought of as a pathetic human in a wheelchair whose life sucks into an average person”. Having the ability to play sports gives those who have disabilities the feeling of being an average person.
Doping rids the true athletes of what they truly deserve and is wrong; because why should those who put in a hundred per cent of their effort, be outshone by individuals who are choosing to use substances to enhance their physical and mental abilities? Doping damages the sports industry as a whole because it has a serious physical and mental effects on the athletes, as well as damaging the idea of sportsmanship and it also breaks the trust of the fans, as they realise their idols are hypocrites. Doping in sports dates back to the ancient Greek times (need ref here). There are anti-doping agencies worldwide in virtually every country. In Switzerland its anti-doping Switzerland, in Nigeria it’s the Nigerian national anti-doping committee and in the UK its UK anti-doping.
