“Artificial sweeteners have also been increasingly tied to increased risk for developing metabolic syndrome and related diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.” In many cases, diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome are link to the overuse of artificial sweeteners. Some of the consumers of these sugars don’t realize how harmful these sweeteners can be and what damage they can cause to the body. Splenda, Equal, and Stevia are some of the most common sugars used in the United States and North America. People should become more aware of the ingredients on the nutrition labels of each of these sugars. This will lower the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and many other serious health issues. Dominating 55% of the sweetener market because of its industrial benefits, HFCS’s increased use has caused dramatic effects in its consumers, including upsetting normal hormonal functions, destroying vital organs, nerves, and throwing off the body’s mineral balance. As the use of HFCS increased, the rates of obesity, diabetes, and related health problems have escalated, resulting in a nationwide epidemic.

In Voltaire's Candide and Jonathan Swift's A Modest Proposal, humans are depicted in this same light, as being greedy and vulgar. The author's intentions are to depict amoral ideas in order to shock readers into questioning their morals. The very fact that the authors believe that their audience can be shocked into moral positions demonstrates their optimistic viewpoints.
We are all aware of sugar, the sweet delicious substance commonly used in food and beverages, but table sugar is not the only sugar there is. There are many artificial sugars that many people now-a-days aren’t aware of. In this research paper I will be identifying four different types of synthetic sugars which are: Saccharin, Aspartame, Sucralose, and Sodium cyclamate. Synthetic sugars, or artificial sweeteners, have both positive and negative effects that can either make a big impact in our body or a small impact. Synthetic sugars can be used in many ways but are most commonly used in regular everyday foods and beverages or they can be mixed with other artificial sweeteners. Synthetic sugars tend to look very similar to real sugar so sometimes it may be hard to distinguish them with the naked eye.
