People who obsessively check their social media have been studied to be less successful in their careers and their lives in general. In the article Speaker: Spend Less Time Looking At Screens, Greg Stiles expresses how the negatives of social media has increased so far as to even take time out of the average person’s workday so they can fulfil their daily dose of social media. He writes how people are becoming less successful and less productive because of this action. Although this may not be physically life-threatening (such as driving drunk), it is and it is not simultaneously; physically versus emotionally living. A social media addiction, similar to a drug or alcohol addiction, will, unless treated, resolve with irreversible consequences, and is indirectly life-threatening.
Most Americans use the internet, and many know they use it often. Teenagers in particular have the highest percentage of internet use, with a whooping 92% of teens admitting they use the internet every single day, with an included 56% admitted that they use the internet several times a day, leaving only 8% of teens who can resist the urge to go online every day. The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
