Todays Increased Awareness
Today, we are slowly seeing changes occur in our society. According to McDonalds, the “Super-size” portions are being phased out in an effort to “Be Smart, Be Active” in order to accommodate to the growing desire for healthier food options. Introducing more seasonal salads, reducing their (super-size) seven ounce fries to (large) six ounces, and allowing options to Happy Meals for parents to choose fruits and vegetables over fries in support of healthy living.
Education
Education on living a healthy life style is huge, yet it is extremely over looked. Education on adults and a more consistent education for children and adolescents is vital in trying to cut the obesity rates. We need to understand what a proper portion

Educators are telling consumers to eat healthier foods, but you may be surrounded by 21st streets fast food galore. Personally, living in Gahanna, Ohio there are three major grocery stores within at least two-mile radius, one of which is walking distance. Krogers, Giant Eagle, and Fresh Tyme Farmers Market underwent a minor investigation to see how well they advertised healthy food choices. Kroger’s front sign included fresh food and their pharmacy. When you walk through the main entrance you are welcomed with the fresh produce section. Not far into the section there is a “guide to fresh produce” book with the nutritional value of all the fruits, vegetables, and herbs, including recipes. The check-out isles all promoted sugary, chocolate, impulse buys with candy everywhere. The ten counted mini fridges were packed with energy drinks, and soda. At the very bottom in the far corner (the hardest place to reach) is a section of water. Giant Eagle advertises their state-liquor agency and of course their pharmacy as part of their front sign. Walking through the main entrance, like Kroger’s, you are greeted with the fresh produce. There was a similar book with recipe cards you could take with you, however it was in the back of the produce section and took a little effort to find. The counted eighteen mini fridges, and sugar packed check-out isles were the exact same set up as Kroger’s. Fresh Tyme Farmers Market is a much smaller store than compared to the other two. They advertise out front vitamins, fresh produce, healthy food, and natural meat. When you walk through the main entrance you are met with the fresh bread, muffins, and cookies. The fresh produce section is in the back of the store. The check out isle had only two mini fridges, all packed with water or some weird canned cucumber melon soda water. They only had Clif and Kind bars, and trail mix to go cups offered in their check-out isles. I
It is natural for a society to be concerned for the future generations. With the rate of obesity growing in adults and children, many begin to see it as an issue that needs to be addressed. New reports show “ childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years” (cdc.gov). Overweight and obese are not actually the same. Overweight is defined as “having excess body weight for a particular height from fat,” and obesity is defined as “having excess body fat” (cdc.gov). From Kindergarten to 12th grade, children spend most of their time at school. School, what we adults think, is supposed to be the teachers of our children while we are at work. They feed them lunch, and possibly breakfast, five days out the week, keep them active, and teach them all about their body and health in health class. But, are they really taking care of them enough? Some schools fail to serve healthy foods, teach health class, or even provide enough time to be physically active. One in three kids are obese, that is reason enough to care about these children’s lives at school. Schools are one of the reasons that the younger generation has a fast growing obese rate.
Obesity is a rising problem in the United States. With obesity rates on the rise something must be done to prevent this massive issue. There are ways to help including educating at young ages, improving nutrition facts at restaurants, and providing more space for citizens to get physically active.
A recent study in 2015 reports that over 15 million people in America have food allergies that is 1 in every 13 people under the age of 18. Making it very likely that somebody in this room is part of these 15 million American’s who have food allergies. If you are somebody who has food allergies, or you know of someone who has food allergies, this speech will help you better understand more about food allergies, so you can deal with food allergies and more importantly be more careful around other people who do. The human body requires the intake of food in order to function properly. The foods that we decide to eat has an effect on the ability to use are mind, are strength, and even how prone we are to getting sick or hurt. Eating to much of the wrong foods, with little or no exercise can cause the silent but deadly epidemic of obesity in children and in teens. In the past, obesity was just known as a condition that only affected adults. In this generation the youths are becoming more prone to obesity. In 1995 an average of 18 million children all around the world was categorized as being overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). In a Childhood Obesity Interventions article it says that 17% (12.5 million) of children in the United States is considered to be obese (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This outrageous number of overweight children in the world is almost tripled in 2010, where 43 million children under 5 are considered to be overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). Another staggering statistic is more than 60% percent of the children that are classified as overweight before they reach puberty, will be overweight as they become adults (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This leads us to the most stifling fact of there being 2.8 million people in the world that die from being overweight or obese each year (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). These shocking statistics show how dangerous obesity really is, and should urge everyone to fight against this epidemic.

Poor nutritional habits have been identified as one of many contributing factors to the increase in childhood obesity. While a multi-disciplinary approach involving family, teachers, medical care providers and the community is desirable, schools, particularly teachers, are in a unique position to play a major role in the education of children and adolescents about nutrition and the prevention of obesity. “Schools are important settings to implement prevention and intervention due to their access, duration of exposure, and subsequent impact on the behavior of children and adolescents” (Pyle, Sharkey, Yetter, Felix, Furlong, & Poston, 2006, p. 372). The challenge of schools, then, is to design and effectively implement a successful curriculum incorporating traditional lecture style, core information with the learning styles and technology skills of today’s 21st century learners, the Net Generation.
According to the American Journal of Public Health, obesity can be linked to nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States (Laidman). The saddest part about this statistic is that obesity is, in most cases, brought on by the individual. With fast food being a cheap and convenient way to feed the family, obesity has constantly been on the rise since the industry’s proliferation. Poor diet combined with lack of exercise has caused the emergence of routine doctor visits for avoidable conditions. Beginning with the youth, school programs that teach nutrition and fitness can help stop the growing numbers. Help and support from the government to lower the amount of advertisements to the public and reconstruction of communities that are more walker and biker friendly can greatly reduce the amount of obesity in the nation. Obesity is a serious problem in the United States that can be defeated through education and self-control.
Super-Size Me showed how one of the most popular fast food restaurants around today may be leading future generations to severe health problems. First, my personal reaction to this documentary is an eye opener. I knew McDonalds was more harmful than other fast food places, but I never knew about the lawsuit between McDonalds and its consumers. I never saw McDonalds as having a big impact on my life; this is probably because the McDonald’s in my hometown never had a super-size option. In the video, Spurlock conducted interviews to gain multiple perspectives on what kind of people eat McDonald’s food.... ...

Childhood obesity is a health problem that is becoming increasingly prevalent in society’s youth. For a number of years, children across the nation have become accustomed to occasionally participating in physical activities and regularly snacking on sugary treats. In result of these tendencies, approximately one third of American children are currently overweight or obese (Goodwin). These grim statistics effectively represent all the lack of adult interference, in regards to health, has done to the youth of America. The habits of over consuming foods and under participating in physical activities are all too common in the children of today. Children cannot solve this issue alone, though. These young people need to essentially be given the opportunities to make positive health decisions and learn about good, nutritional values.
There are plenty of people that do not pay close attention to the nutrition labels on food or do not understand what’s in the food that we eat. If we are expecting the parents, adults, or some of the children to be healthy and are not able to read the nutrition label, how can we expect them to have healthy lifestyles? In order for this new generation be healthy and active. We need to provide them with the support and resources they need. In order, to have a healthy routine. We should be able to offer the support that needs to be able to receive a better outcome for our future generations and as well as the current one.
Face it, we have all heard the phrase,"You are what you eat" countless times in your life, but what does that truly mean. Every few months or years, millions go into trying new diets and diet pills but fail to understand why they cannot continue to eat healthy after their first few days on their new diet. Well, 1) the word "DIE" is in diet 2) no matter where you look you 're going to find delicious food ads and junk food and 3) you don 't have support.
Obesity is an issue that most people may be aware of, but I don't feel like many people actually know the ins and outs of it and how bad it really is. Although the speech that Jamie Oliver gave was about teaching children about food, I feel as if we need to teach adults about food just as much as children.
I won’t ask who has gained this weight, but by a raise of hands, how many of you have thought to yourself, “Are my jeans getting tighter?”
