Beuys Dorminvil Sociology 31 Final Essay Being someone who had no prior knowledge of sociology before attending college. This particular subject was extremely fascinating. It did in fact force me to think outside of the box. Allowing me to become aware of myself and my contributions to my society, as well as becoming more mindful of other cultures and their societies. Because we are so much a custom to our traditional norms and values, we often believe that what we Americans do in our everyday lives should be the end all be all. Despite this belief “Americans” also have a numerous amount of subcultures, as many nations do. Including myself, just a few years ago I became a United States citizen. I was born in the Caribbean Island of Haiti, which is considered to be one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. Although I spent most of my childhood in the United States, the When a man is considered to be the one who “brings home the bacon” and the wife is the one who takes care of the kids, are all forms of social construct. It is what society believe and perceive to be true. Women can play multiple roles than that. Today women run many corporate offices, women are not martial artist. Another norm is that it is mandatory to be married. It is looked down upon when someone is married, or a woman having a baby out of wedlock. Those are social structure of families. Unfortunately many people are not as fortunate to have both parents around, or having a male figure earn the income. That is not so much the norm this day and age. A couple can now live together, have children, and will never have the need to be married. Social Construct constantly change. Who knows? being married may once again be a great thing, and having a two parents in the home both earning a great income and taking care of their kids living happily ever after be the “Family Norms” again. Hmm,It will probably change in the next twenty
Omi and Winant’s concept of racialization is formed around the theory that race is a social conception while Bonilla-Silva’s is formed around the theory of racialized social systems. We will first look at Omi and Winant, and then we’ll move onto Bonilla-Silva’s concept of racialization. Omi and Winant say “Within the contemporary social science literature, race is assumed to be a variable which is shaped by broader societal forces.” (Omi & Winant 1986, pg. 3) The racial line in the United States has been defined and reinforced over centuries. Whites are seen as a “pure” while those who are mixed are categorized as “nonwhite.” This sort of thinking comes from the idea of hypo-descent. The theory of hypo-descent is as follows: no matter how small the African American ancestry a person has, they are still considered African American. Marvin Harris said “The rule of hypo-descent is, therefore, an invention, which we in the United States have made in order to keep biological facts from intruding into our collective racist fantasies.” (Omi & Winant 1986, pg. 3) The notion of “passing” began after the implementation of hypo-descent. Individuals who are categorized as “black” according to hypo-descent attempt to bypass discriminatory barriers by “passing” for white. When an individual is “passing” they try to assimilate themselves into the other race. “Passing” made it to the Supreme Court with the Takao Ozawa case. Ozawa, a Japanese male, filed for United States citizenship under the Naturalization Act of 1906. Ozawa stated that he had assimilated to the “white” way of life and should be considered “white.” The Supreme Court found that only Caucasians were white, and the Japanese were an “unassimilated” race.

Today in society, people follow these “cultural myths”, which tells us what is and what is not acceptable in life because these morals have been instilled in us since childhood. People created cultural myths as a set of social norms they expected people to follow. In Kenneth A. Gould’s and Tammy L. Lewis’s article, The Sociological Imagination, they talk about society and the way or how it affects us. It examines the relationship between an individual and society. Everything we do and how we do it is affected by society and others around us. Everything that happens with society in turn affects us and those around us. The way we live and we respond to society can have a major impact on the rest of the world.
1) To possess a sociological imagination means the ability to understand the interaction between biography and history, or the interplay of self and the world. My favorite food has to be broccoli. In order for broccoli to had been brought to the United States events had to have happened first. The Industrial Revolution led people to switch from making goods by hand to manufacturing goods, farmers were experimenting with new types of vegetables (broccoli). This historical event is the reason as to why now our current state of farming contains the planting of many different types of vegetables, and the accessibility of food engineering we now have today. Monsanto is an institution that has to function in order for vegetables to be available. Monsanto delivers agricultural products that support farmers all around the world. The meaning this
Like Hobbes and Locke before him, all men are made by nature to be equivalents, in this way nobody has a common right to represent others and the main rectify power is the power that is caused out of understandings.
'Neither the life of an individual nor the history of the society can be understood without understanding both' noted by Mills, the sociological imagination is a quality of mind that facilitates people to use information and to develop reason in order to achieve lucid summations of what is going on in the world and of what may be happening within themse...
The Sociological Imagination is a book written by C. Wright Mills. In this book Mills coins the phrase sociological imagination and introduces it as being a way of sociologically examining any behavior humans do on a daily basis or any decision that they make throughout the day. Mills defines the sociological imagination as being a sort of combination between biography and history. By this Mills means that when examining a decision through a sociological imaginative perspective you must combine what historically has happened and how that effects your decision and what is going on in your life and how that effects your other decision. As a sociologist using the sociological imagination you can examine every behavior that any person exhibits.
A theory, according to James M. Henslin, the author of our text, is “A general statement about how some parts of the world fit together and how they work; an explanation of how two or more facts are related to one another” (Henslin, 2015). The three theoretical perspectives (conflict theory, functionalism, and symbolic interactionism) are each separate views— stances taken by sociologists that help us better understand how social interactions work. Henslin says, “Each theory is like a lens through which we can view social life.” (Henslin, 2015) I placed the three theoretical perspectives in the order above because it is my thesis that conflict theory is the broadest of the three theories
When I had enrolled in sociology this past summer, I didn’t imagine I would learn so much! I’ve learned more than just how people interact; I’ve learned why. This has been a challenging class as there are many aspects involved, and it can be difficult to remember how they are all connected. However, the four things that have stood out to me are C. Wright Mills’ the power elite, the cultural transmission theory, symbolic interactionism, as well as the tie between medicine and sociology.
Maybe some marriages simply can’t be traditional, and that is okay. Since marriage is about the people in it, I think the most important part is making sure they are both satisfied with themselves and each other. The opinion of other’s should not be a factor since they are not part of the relationship. Everyone is unique, which makes everyone’s relationship unique. Trying to mold them around this idea of what roles should be played by whom is like trying to use the same part to fix every car, it is not going to work.
Emile Durkeim was a French sociologist who helped shape one of the major theoretical frameworks of sociology, called Functionalism. He believed that "different parts of society are primarily composed of social institutions, each of which is designed to fill different needs, and each of which has particular consequences for the form and shape of society" (Crossman). Each part is dependent on the other and consist of several core institutions that define sociology. "The core institutions defined by sociology which are important to understand for this theory include: family, government, economy, media, education, and religion" (Crossman). Durkeim made it his life's goal to "prove that social facts exist and affect what we do" (Witt, 10). Durkeim
What I found specifically interesting is that our culture has a huge influence on how we think, respond and how we react to all situations. Sociology has helped me understand myself better, as well as those around me. It has prompted me to stop and think before reacting or responding to certain individuals within my family and those outside of my family, I have taken the time to ponder why people behave the way they do. Sociology has taught me the ability to understand the meanings of labels, discrimination, and oppression. I have also learned that sociology is really a study of civilization, inequalities and the consequences of people’s behavior. Also that our personal troubles affect
A)Summary: The sociological imagination can be applied directly to our individual lives. It consider about what specific things do we actual need. we should be able to recognize the practical and immediate value of sociology to solving the problems we met. It refers to the ability to connect biography with history. sociological imagination is to help develop the ability to participate in social life and step back and analyze broader meanings of what is going on in the world around us. It suggests that people look at their own personal problems as social issues and, in general, try to connect their own individual experiences with the workings of society. So we all have a sociological imagination. It just requires development.
There are many social problems plaguing the world, including the issue of aging inequality and elders. This social problem is significant because the baby boomers of the 1946-64s are now starting to be the youngest old. Our society is starting to, and needs to, change to accommodate the needs of the elderly.
