Core competency one consists of identifying with the social work profession. This core competency relates to the time in my internship. The following paragraphs will connect the practice behaviors associated with the core competency to the artifacts that I have chosen where I demonstrated the mastery of each practice behavior. Youth homelessness is a global social issue that is rapidly increasing. Shelton & Bond (2017) divulged how accurate data on the prevalence of youth homelessness in the United States are significantly lacking. It could be due to the challenges of collecting data and variance in definitions of what constitutes homelessness for youth. Often times there are multiple levels of oppression evident amongst vulnerable individuals. Homeless transgendered youth are susceptible to intersectionality. As stated in Competency 6, it is imperative for the ethical profession of Social Work, to be engaged and understanding of the multitude of social issues that impact individuals. Thus, Social Workers are expected to be agents of change, and it is an professional responsibility to challenge unjust policies, systems, and ideologies on the behalf of marginalized, oppressed, and vulnerable populations.
For me competency 2 is the ability for us as social workers recognizing the characteristics and factors that help shape an individual’s identity and help define what an individual believes in and what they stand for. These characteristics and factors include things such as gender, ethnicity, culture, religion, age, etc. Its these characteristics and factors that affect an individual’s human experience and it’s what makes each of us incredibly unique. As social workers, we must have both respect and appreciation for diversity. Finally, competency 2 also means that we’re able to see how diversity and difference also brings oppression, marginalization, and as well privilege and power. Competencies are “measureable practice behaviors that are comprised of knowledge, values, and skills.” (Kirst-Ashman, 2010). Thus it can be said that competency takes more than skills and knowledge, it requires the right and appropriate attitude that eventually translates to behavior. For the reason, it is the "means" to achieve the "ends." One should always bear in mind that the competencies of each job position differ from one another and may influence our career decision making. I have mastered several skills that would enhance my performance in a professional social work setting. Social work can be very rewarding in a number of ways, but challenges do exist before the reward. One challenge I may encounter if I was to become a social worker is becoming attached to the victim. I think I would feel emotionally connected and want to save them. Before taking the class, I had the mentality that it would be easy to help people and guide them to a better life, but this class has made me realize that it is not always that easy. When speaking to victims, I could see myself feeling sorry for them and wanted to give them everything to make themselves feel better. I feel like I would allow my personal life to interfere with my work life, where I would constantly be thinking about the clients and their health instead of focusing
According to the National Association of Social Work (NASW), Social work is defined as, “The professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to this goal.” As such to pursue a career as a Social worker one must contain some key values. Chapter 1 first starts of by describing the content of the book as a journey and how throughout the chapters we will be able to apply what we are learning on human behavior and the social environment to social work practice and ultimately our lives. There are many basic assumptions that will help guide us in this journey. One assumption that stood out to me was how our lives are interconnected with the people we work and interact with on a daily. However we do differ in many ways and it’s with those differences that we as social workers must respect and learn from. I learnt that the use of words or expressions such as ‘that’s brilliant’ can be misinterpreted by some clients to mean that you agree with what they have done. I often use expressions like that in conversations. I am now aware that it can be misunderstood and would like to guard against it. We watched a Youtube video, two social workers called out to a service user flat for an initial assessment. They were refused entry by a friend because he had bad experience with social workers in the past and his child was taken away.
As an upcoming social worker I understand there are certain traits I portray that are strengths in the social work field. I also understand that were there are strengths, there are weaknesses. I did not realize what my strengths and weaknesses were until I began to practice in the field. Some strengths I have found in myself are good listening skills, ability to handle stressful situations, and time management skills. Along with those strengths I have found my weaknesses are speaking what I believe about a situation, procrastination, and taking on too much responsibility.
Through previous work experience and time spent as an undergraduate student, I have developed various strengths, skills, and knowledge concerning social work. I have strengths in my readiness to learn and my eagerness to be in field. I have direct practice skills through participating in SOWK 4425 – Practice III (Wright, 2016), and I have acquired ample knowledge on theories, policies, and social work practice through other social work and supplemental classes at Texas State. Furthermore, I have experienced self-discovery to find that I have a set of values that correlate with the core values found in the National Association Code of Ethics (2008). Going forward, I want to further develop direct practice skills, as well as expand my knowledge and skills concerning more macro social work. I also would like to push my comfort zone in order to
Social work practitioners can use the information from this study to document activities that MSW graduates engaged in relevant to cultural competency. The study will provide current and future social workers with specific details and strategies that they can employ to assist them on their journey toward culturally competent practice. In addition, this research study will offer examples of what social workers can do to build their knowledge, skills, and values.
Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
One of the most important values I have learned in this course were these specific core values in social work. Social work seeks to provide service and have social justice. However, there is still a great amount of competence to grasp. Dimitrijoska and Vladimir (2016) state that “[t]he social worker is responsible for his/her professional development and must continually work on gaining new knowledge and learning new methodologies (p. 55). Moreover, as I move forward in social work courses, I will need to take a few actions to ultimately become successful. I will need to do more research, whether it be scholarly articles or assigned texts. I would like to engage in my community by volunteering at more agencies, and making connections with the organizations and learning from social workers. The last step I would like to take is from this point forward, I would like to engage in mindfulness practices. This step in particular is for me to be able to have a healthy relationship with myself, so I am able to continue working for clients in the future, and be able to act as an effective
Social work is a profession which promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and enhance well-being. It is important to acknowledge the history of social work and the purpose of social work and why it exists. Social work is a questioned theory with different perspectives on what it is and how it should be practised. Social work helps people to deal with personal and social problems so that people can overcome or adjust to any personal difficulties. Social work is a combination of social stability and social change. Social stability promotes individual and social welfare and social change seek to change negative aspects of society. Values are implicit within the law and policy and these tend to reflect the values within society. Personal values can influence the way social workers interpret and implement their profession.
