Communication skills are fundamental to social work practice. The factor that mostly strongly influenced simulated client responses was empathy. Empathic social work created less resistance and increased the amount of information disclosed by clients. Empathy therefore appears to be central to good social work communication in the child protection situation. Effective communication skills are one of the most important components of a social workers job. Social workers must communicate with clients to gain information, thereby causing detrimental effects to clients. Listening skills is another of many tasks the social worker must have while dealing with clients. Emotional abandonment occurs when parents do not provide the emotional conditions and the emotional environment necessary for healthy development. The causes of emotional injury need to be understood and accepted so they can heal; until that occurs, the pain will stay with them, becoming a driving force in their adult lives. After a long term of facing child abuse children would start to hate everything about themselves. Everything around them they would have a problem with, blaming it on themselves. They began to become cold hearted and start to cringe at the fact that their lives will not be the same as other children. When they pass by, or are walking, they smell food that they will not get a taste of. They start to hate themselves, thinking that they are worthless, and unimportant. Dave Pelzer wrote:
