As a social worker, one can agree a criteria that defines competence in the field is revealed through the process of Evidence-based practice (EBP). (EBP) is defined as interventions that are well-researched combined with clinical experience and ethic, and is utilized by practitioners to guide and inform treatments and services to be delivered (Social Work Policy Institute, 2010). A practitioner that demonstrates interconnectedness strategies through the relationship of both researcher and client, for the collaboration of what works based on the underlying condition, and to whom it is to be applied, is necessary (Social Work Policy Institute, 2010). When (EBP) is applied by the practitioner as intended, it is most effective in its approach …show more content…
Conditions of “engaging in appropriate study, training, and consultation,” while having competent people in intervention or techniques providing supervision is ethical (Code of Ethics, n.d.). Another criteria that defines competence in the field of social-work recognizes the role of the practitioner regarding identifying and targeting families that are troublesome, along with the negotiation of access which requires special consideration (Spratt, 2011). The profession of the social worker is to design alternative examples while viewing issues in order to understand and act upon social problems (Spratt, 2011). Through the continued required development of support and one’s understanding, along with the appreciation of the position the practitioner might take in the development of solutions rendering it effective, and considerations are made regarding what leads to harms taking place over the life-span (Spratt, 2011). As an example to substantiate this claim of competence, we see social workers working within their professional boundaries, while attempting to perfect their development in the field in order to “advance their expertise” (Code of Ethics,
Today there are institutional review boards that are designated to approve and monitor research studies to ensure ethical standards are being met (Dudley, 2011, p. 45). As social work practice becomes more evidence-based, the worker will have an increased obligation to advocate for conducting and consuming research that aligns with ethical standards. A practicing social worker can help ensure the ethical treatment of their clients by empowering them to take an active role in their treatment decisions and goals. Three important mandates of the Council on Social Work Education that are directly relevant to research are adhering to the values and ethics of social work, promoting an understanding and commitment to diversity, and promoting human rights and social and economic justice (Dudley,
Evidence Based Practice is a growing field in the social work arena. The essence of evidence-based practice is placing the client’s benefits first by posing specific questions of importance to the client, searching objectively and efficiently for the best evidence, and then using the evidence to guide one’s practice. In short, evidence-based practice is the integration of research into practice. In this paper I illustrate the steps of evidence-based practice from the formation of a COPES question to the identification of practice guidelines.
This paper highlights the unique contributions that social workers can bring to the field by using diagnosis in clinical social work. Though it has been debatable whether it is significant in the practice being that social workers are not doctors, but rather clinicians. Some people believe that social workers should practice diagnosis in clinical social work while others feel that it’s unjustified. This paper will explore the pros and cons to diagnosis in clinical social work practice through the history of social work, DSM, labeling, misdiagnosis. While applying strength perspective and empowerment in Clinical Social Work Practice. As a result, Social workers are competent to diagnosis patients, due to their level of education that has taught the ways of assessing, diagnosing and providing counseling to clients through the code of ethics.

Professionalism in the social work field goes beyond licensure and expertise (Cournoyer, 2014). According to Cournoyer (2014), social work professionalism encompasses the concepts of integrity, self-efficacy and knowledge, self-understanding and self-control, and social support (Cournoyer, 2014). Embedded in social work professionalism is the person-environment perspective, which posits that our personal attributes, interactions and relationships with others, and environment influence a social worker’s practice. Cournoyer stresses that it is a social worker’s responsibility to acknowledge and regulate his or her personal biases, ideologies, and beliefs when working with clients in order to prevent them from negatively impacting the therapeutic

This class, Social Work Theory & Practice was made to be able to introduce me to social work theories, ideas, and skills needed to work in the social work profession. This class main tool used was a book called A Brief Introduction of Social Work Theory by David Howe which discusses social work theories in a compressive and explainable way. This class is important to my higher learning because it break down the theories that I will need to use during my practice and a...

In recent years, nursing scholars have developed many Evidence Based Practice (EBP) models to improve the implementation of research findings into nursing practice. Application of evidence based models can reduce the complexity of the challenge of transforming evidence into clinical practice. Effective EBP models to guide translation of research into practice are vital to avoid failure accompanied by a costly investment of time and resources. There are many EBP models, at times it can be confusing for clinicians to select an appropriate EBP model due to excess availability of models and various approaches in implementing EBP. Therefore, it is important for clinicians to aware about these models and select an EBP model that best-fit for their
It focuses on the social workers knowledge of resources, and interventions available both private, and in the community. It involves good verbal and listening skills. It further involves the social workers ability to make appropriate evaluations, assessments, effective referrals, and terminations. It involves counseling clients to recognize their strengths and weaknesses and to identify problems, and to set attainable goals. It further involves helping clients to be receptive to solutions through linking clients with necessary support whether in the community, or private. . Social Workers wear many hats involving client and families, and
A social worker must have the knowledge and skills to apply to intervention strategies that can address key issues through a wide range of tools (Miley, O’Melia & Dubois 2013, p. 7). To devise an intervention plan for the case study, Miley’s (2013, p. 112) four step model is utilised.
Out of all of the members of the health care interdisciplinary team, nurses are the ones who spend the most time giving care to the patient. In order to give the greatest quality of care to a patient, it is important for nurses to “assume accountability and responsibility in fulfilling the role of the associate degree nurse, through personal and professional growth, integration of current evidence-based practice and understanding of multiple dimensions of patient-centered care” (Ivy Tech Community College, 2016). One of the most important parts of this is the nurse’s ability to take responsibility in patient care. Battié and Steelman (2014) notes that patients expect the best care from nurses, so it is only fair that nurses also expect themselves responsible for delivering the best care. Battié and Steelman (2014) also says that accountability relies on two parts: clinical expertise and effective communication. Nursing expertise can only be gained through personal growth that comes from practice or learning over time, while effective communication has been built into nursing through
Social work is a multifaceted, ever adapting profession, which has had many purposes and identities through the years. It is imperative for the vocation to constantly evolve alongside the social climate and the new ways in which we identify and treat those who are in need of support. Social workers can be required to take on the role of counsellor, advocate, case-worker, partner, assessor of risk and need, and at times (as the government seeks to push social work further and further towards the health and education sectors) a servant of the state. The profession is dramatically subject to affection by societal change, thus demanding social workers have a duty to be up to date with the latest developments in understanding how and why people get to the point of requiring social work intervention, and how best to prevent and cater for it.
I tend to want to do everything I can for someone else. While warmth and care are positive character qualities, I have learned that creating a work-life balance and taking some time for oneself is beneficial. Finding a balance decreases the chances of burnout and helps social workers maintain active commitments to their consumers (Corey & Corey, 2011). In my Introduction to Social Work Practice class, I have enjoyed applying my knowledge to role-play situations and mock case studies. I have learned about various theories of practice such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. As I proceed further into my coursework, I anticipate building my knowledge of how to apply the textbook material to the field. I hope these practice situations will continually challenge me to grow because I know that not every situation in the field will be easy to manage. Nonetheless, I am willing to undertake any challenge to become a part of a profession I deeply admire and have the chance to help others from all areas of
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
