Social Stratification and Poverty Sociologists use the term social stratification to describe the system of social standing. Social Stratification refers to a society’s categorization of its people into rankings of socioeconomic tiers based on factors like wealth, income, race, education, and power (OpenStax 2018a, pg. 185). In today’s generation we can see the world being dominated by the rich people. Because of the social stratification based on the race, income and education, there is social inequality. After observing the picture for several minutes, I can perceive that a young black boy is trying to escape from the burden of poverty, but the weight of the ball and chains is so heavy and strong. That he can escape from that burden. In the other sense, I could perceive that the picture is showing us the lives of Negro society people in United States of America and how the black peoples are strangled in the chains of poverty and inequality. According to the U.S Census bureau, The Black population in United States is estimated to be 13.2 % of the total population (OpenStax 2018c, pg. 236). Poverty is a state in which income is insufficient to provide basic needs such as food, clothes, education, shelter, and medical care (OpenStax 2018d, pg. 211). When a family is suffering from poverty and has a very low amount of income to fulfill the basic requirements of family. The children from such poor background tends to have a very slim chance of being successful in the future. On contrary, the children from a wealthy and rich family tends to have better chance of being successful in future. The reason a child from a poor family remains to be poor because of the necessities that children requires cannot be fulfilled by their parents because of the work there are employed in by the social stratification. The stratification has created a norm where the people from a specific category needs to be employed only in that specific jobs and field of work. So, many people from a race or religion are found to be categorized in a very low-income wielding job. Which only helps those people to fulfill the basic requirements. One more thing that fascinated me about the picture above is that spirit of that young black boy who has been stranded with the chains and weight of poverty hasn’t gave up yet and he is continuing to fight against poverty and wants to get rid of that heavy burden. The picture is telling us that we shouldn’t give up on or dreams no matter how many obstacles
