Humans are prone to distraction, adding in easily accessible sites such as social media, increases their potential for distraction. 59% of students are accessing social media in class, effecting the classroom environment, while even more access it during study time (Does social media effect efficiency). Technology is a tool that most college students were born into, and social media has become a major part of that tool. We use social media to reach out to our friends, family, and those across the world. As well as getting our opinions, feelings, experiences and plans shared. What about when students get home and aren’t monitored by an authority that isn’t a guardian? In one instance described by Richtel, researchers looked specifically at the differences of how playing video games versus watching TV after doing homework impacted both memory of vocabulary words and sleep quality. They found that the video games had a significantly worse impact on both quality of sleep and memory of vocabulary words for students. Other studies have shown that the brain is quite active during boredom, which suggest that the constant influx of new stimuli is negatively impacting students’ memory as well. Anecdotal evidence comes from high school senior Vishal Singh, a student followed by Richtel to help uncover more information about technology’s impact on adolescents. Singh claims that given the choice, he will often pick social media or computer games over reading and other school work, which is hurting his GPA.
