Opening the way people think and how they behave with others around them. Sometimes this helps individuals out with allowing them to speak without the fear of communicating in the real world.”While still no substitute for face-to-face interaction, social media have opened lines of communication and inquiry for both students and institutions that were inconceivable only a decade ago.”(B) Allowing them to to speak their mind although this causes fights and a negative result is shown. With the power to speak one's opinion with no consequences this results in people to be rude to others. By posting it for all to see each person has given rights to the public to view their social media. If a person wanted to keep their life private then they should do the same with their online profile. “But if applicants choose to make information about themselves available to the world, they can hardly object when employers take that information into account in hiring decisions.”(G) Employers are trying their best to find the most suitable candidate and a faster way in deciding is through the use of searching the candidates name and checking their social media. If the candidate uploaded personal information on their online profile then the employers has as much to look at it as the people who follow the candidate. By posting with free will of any content of oneself it includes risks of others seeing it and deciding one's image with this vast information. If a candidate wants to keep a good record then they should keep their profile clean or private so that their image will not look unappealing. To assure the best results and not showing a negative image the most efficient thing is to keep the personal account with a positive image assuring that no unfavorable image is
For example, Rosen states, “According to a recent survey by Microsoft, seventy percent of U.S. recruiters report that they have rejected candidates because of information found online,” (Rosen, Para. 3). Most of the time it is a necessity for companies to do online and background research on candidates because of wanting a safe environment to work in. Social media sites are the fastest way to see who a person truly is. But sometimes it can just be a character they posses because that’s what they’re followers want to see rather than their true self.
Over half of the applicants found on search engines and nearly two-thirds of the applicants found on social networking sites were not hired as a result of the information found on the sites. (Source H) Things found on the internet or social media are almost always taken out of context and doesn’t show what the person applying is actually like. Admission offices and employers are more likely to start and use social media to look up applicants. This can make it harder to get into a school or business if you have a social media account. According to and NACAC article, Eighty-eight percent of admission offices believed social media were either “somewhat” or “very” important to their future recruitment efforts. (Source B) Colleges now a days always look to see if applicants have a social media account that means that if they get access to the account there is a 38% chance that, that person does not get accepted. One-fourth of colleges surveyed indicated that they used Web search or social networking
In the current time, it seems like one cannot go a day without using at least one social media website. This might be especially true among groups of teenagers and young adults. Social media became a vital part of daily life that feeds people with several types of information constantly. Political news is a type of information that can reach the people through the means of social media. Since presidents are constantly seeking new strategies to increase their communication with the public in order to spread their political message, they utilize the different social media websites. Hence, social media became a platform to spread political message. It is not surprising that now the majority of political officials and candidates have social media accounts more than ever before, such as a Twitter account.
Recruiting and hiring for vacant or newly created positions has changed over the past 5 years. Recruiters now have various new options for posting and advertising for these positions. Just as there are numerous ways to advertise there are various ways for recruiters to screen and find potential candidates. In this paper I will explore how social media offers new options that recruiters now have compared to what they had in years past. There will also be a discussion about how recruiters use social media and what needs to be done to avoid legal pitfalls, specifically avoiding discrimination of certain protected classes.
Social network profiles are the most essential tool to judge job applicants because it reflects a good image of the job applicants. For example, if the company is recruiting a writer, it would be better to choose a person who has a blog web page in a blogging website such as Word-Press that shows and reflects his/her ability in writing. In addition to that, a Human Resources manager can check this person’s Facebook and Twitter in order to see his/her grammar and writing skills. This information provides accurate and complete picture about the candidate. (Fish & Lee, n.d). Moreover, social network profiles can prove the application as it shows applicant’s participation in many fields. For instance, when a recruiter enters person’s blog that includes art and design work, it will show his/her passion to work as a designer in the company. Therefore, it is important to judge applicants based on their social media profiles because it shows a good image of the person.
This is yet another way of invading privacy. In the past, employers would only know what you told them in your interview. They would assess your skills and determine if you were right for the job, aside from knowing your beliefs or views. However, now with Facebook an employer can see all the personal information, this can negatively influence a candidate’s job. The same goes for those who are currently employed and potential students. “Dr. Nora Barnes, Director for the Center of Marketing Research at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, published a study that showed more than 20% of colleges and universities search social networks for their admissions candidates” (Fodeman). This is becoming a part of the admissions process, but it is unfair. Searching someone’s Facebook to determine his or her admissions eligibility is wrong and a privacy invasion. As long as a student has fulfilled the school’s requirements and done well in school, why should it matter what their personal lives are like? In the time before Facebook, this would be like a school sending someone to secretly follow a potential student and see what he or she does in their

Students who want to find jobs may regret posting private pictures and comments on Facebook. Employers not only screen resumes and conduct interviews, but also view job candidates’ Facebook profiles. The boss wants to know if the applicant is actually a “professional.” Pictures may show the person drinking, smoking, or doing other unprofessional activities. Offensive comments can also hurt an applicant’s chances of getting the job.

Social media can be used in our days as a very helpful tool for many things in changing any person’s life ant attitude. It has a positive impact on the society level. These media will keep the person socially active and open to all what happened in the world. Sharing the latest news, photos, finding new friends and knowing the culture. Also, it allows for millions to keep in touch with each other and update for all the new technology. And, it helps people who have difficulties in communication with others to be more socialized and stronger and develop more confidence to feel more comfortable, protected and relaxed just sitting behind a screen. “It saved me time and money without ever requiring me to leave the house; it salvaged my social life, allowed me to conduct interviews as a reporter and kept a lifeline open to my far-flung extended family” says Leonard(231).
Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
Our society depends on knowledge. A new way to communicate this knowledge quickly is through social media (The Power of Social Media 1). Learning through social networking is very useful because the participant can learn the things he wants at the rate he desires (The Power of Social Media 1). Several social media sites have become largely popular, like Facebook and Twitter. With new sites being created year round, it is quite obvious that social networking sites will be prevalent for a while (The Growth of Social Media 1). The main reason social media has become so common is because of its quick access. Anyone can know virtually anything he desires if enough time and effort are put into finding that info (The Power of Social Media 1). Knowledge alone has a very powerful aspect (The Power of Social Media 1). As humans, we long for a sense of knowledge because we are curious beings. People want to know what is going on around them. Not only does knowledge provide a sense of satisfaction, it also expands our options. (Phoenix 1). The more options there are, the more freedom a pers...
