Social media refers to the web-based tools that allow individuals, organizations, and corporations to create, share, or exchange information, interests, ideas and pictures/videos quickly. The social media that I am currently using and used most often are Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Facebook helps the users to connect with the people in their life, such as friends, family, classmates, and colleagues. It allows the users to communicate with each other using the messenger app, express their thoughts by updating their status, share their pictures and videos, play games, and receive notifications when other users interact with them, such as posting on their timelines (Geary, 2012). The users can edit their photos by applying the effects and filters that Instagram offers. The maximum duration for the Instagram videos is 15 seconds (About.com Tech, 2016). YouTube is a global video-sharing website where individuals can discover, watch, like, comment, share, and upload videos. Youtube provides a platform for individuals to connect, inform, and inspire others across the world (Tech Tips Surfnetkids, 2007). The social justice, activist, or advocacy organizations that I am currently following via social media are Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Medscape, and Planned Parenthood. CDC is a federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services that promotes health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability.
