Social Media’s Pros and Cons for Athletes
The world is constantly changing and creating faster ways of communicating with each other, especially with the use of social media. Social media impacts an average person’s life on a daily basis. In the sports world, social networking is very valuable. Coaches, sport affiliated companies and athletes utilize the social media for many reasons. However, athletes do not recognize the pros and cons of using the social network. Athletes need constructive and strategic education on the benefits and risks of social media to protect them from disastrous consequences.
Social media has many positive benefits for athletes. When they are off the court or field, athletes enjoy staying in touch with supportive fans and friends (Van Schaik). According to a Sports Illustrated article, “Some American athletes have successfully used social media to improve their social lives” (“America’s Tweethearts”). This allows the athlete to relax and loose some stress. Also, they like to share experiences with fans by means of pictures and posts to show the “other side” of their life. For example, athletes can upload pictures on Instagram of their location, family, sports team, and anything else. Sending tweets on Twitter is commonly used by athletes because it is easy and fast to post pictures and comment about any and everything that is on their mind (Ford).
According to a leading article about social media, YouTube is another way to share videos with fans and supporters of a team or organization. It can also advertise a player’s talents and abilities to athletic coaches or employers of top sports agencies and companies (Ressler). For instance, some high school athletes use social networks to highlight their ath...

...ymbiotic relationship between athletics and social media work well together. As they advance to higher stages of their sport, they need to be cautious that people are looking at them, physically and online. Young athletes look up to these “role models” and watch everything they do. Not only are the kids looking at them, but the parents of these kids are observing, too. Not to mention the many leaders and directors of sport organizations, programs, and schools who demand smart choices from the athlete, too. Constructive education is valuable for an athlete’s career. Knowing the pros and cons of utilizing the Web is vital to the development of the athlete and can provide significant benefits, and the responsibility for savvy web behavior rests with the athletes and those who teach them. Education is the best way to ensure athletes use the Web in a beneficial manner.
Should college athletes be required to graduate with a degree, before they go to the pro’s? I believe that all colleges should make it mandatory for their student athletes to graduate before they are allowed to go to the pro’s. Only a small percentage of student athletes go on to have a career in professional sports after college. The few that are lucky enough to make it to the pro’s usually end up playing for a couple of years and then end up not being able to find work. College athletes should be required to obtain degree’s because not only does it allow you to have something to fall back on if you can’t make it to the pro’s, but it also can show pro sports teams that you are a mature individual, and your education is important to you as well.
.In addition young athletes have become more aggressive. Kids that participate in competitive sports are becoming more and more aggressive and competitive the sports have become themselves. Mitchell reveals "traits like bullying and the need to dominate their oppo...
Social media is something that has quickly became a huge part of our global culture. It has taken over the sports world, with most athletes, and all sports organizations having their own official accounts across the wide variety of social media sites. As a result, the governing bodies of all the professional sports leagues in North America have had to make policies that define what behaviors are unacceptable for their athletes and teams to do on their social media accounts. Many of the policies developed by the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL are understandable, as it is clearly in the best interest of the respective leagues. Banning social media use during games is an obvious one. However, some of the rules made by the leagues go too far. These policies
It seems to be a very popular notion to argue that college athletes should be paid just like pro athletes. College athletes put in hours on end for practice, games, and they bring in money for the school. Many fans of the sport spend money on tickets for games, merchandise, and when betting on the games. Television broadcasting alone of college sports have soared to nearly $2 billion a year (Koba, 1). The biggest argument is that college athletes should be paid because they generate so much money for the schools they represent. The amount of money big colleges bring in every year is staggering. Why shouldn’t they be compensated for their efforts when so much money is being made? And are they really making money though, or are they actually losing money? However, with most to all college athletes having their college tuition paid for, what greater reward could they ask for than a free education?
There are many things that these athletes deserve to have and seems only right for them to have most of them. Anything they can get will be great progress. All of these options could work, but they will all take time. There are positives and negatives to everyone. The one thing each athlete needs is to feel secure if they get injured while playing the sport they love. They need to feel that since they went all out for their sport and their school has their back and will honor them for their hard work and not let them suffer with medical bills or losing a scholarship. An athlete is a one of a kind person so why shouldn’t we treat them like
Coaches and athletes should discuss the choices that the athletes make while using social media networks instead of completely banning them. Another way to approach this issue would be to stress for the players to keep their social media accounts under control. Prohibiting the use of social media due to harmful actions is also prohibiting all communications that would be made that are unrelated to the college/university.
When applying to University there are multiple steps which lead to many frustrations and stress. Everyone from the top student to the student who is forced to apply, deals with these frustrations. In my experience, I threw things, abused my computer, and my eyes may have watered from the frustrations of course. Not only is the process hard, filling in every form, obtaining letter of recommendation, but the four years that you spent trying to come up with the information you are providing was hard.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Did you remember to tell your cousin happy birthday on Facebook? Do you know how many people liked your latest picture on instagram? Or how many retweets did you get on your totally relatable and borderline inspirational tweet? As of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites (Rainie). Also more than 9 out of 10 American teenagers use social media(Blaszczak). Because of social networking we are becoming more connected than ever before. Important information can spread faster than wildfire, and we now have the ability to have friends and relationships all over the world. With the ability to communicate and interact with anyone at our fingertips what could go wrong? Well...lots of things.
The main goals behind Sport Education are to help students become knowledgeable about different sports and activities to the point where they can participate in these outside of the classroom to stay active. Also it teaches execution and strategies and encourages competitiveness. It is important for kids to be competitive because they will have to be in life and it will teach the importance of winning and losing the right way. “Sports offer kids a great chance to work cooperatively toward a common goal. And working coope...

Jeff Kemp, a retired professional NFL quarterback, once stated, “Sports teach positive lessons that enrich America even while revealing its flaws” (Kemp). Athletics offer so much more than the joy of game day and the thrill of a win. Being involved in sports holds the key to a world filled with passion, excitement, and once in a lifetime opportunities. There is nothing better than seeing the student section arrive in full force or hearing the school fight song chanted before kickoff. However, when life moves on and leaves sports behind, the lessons it has instilled in athletes never disappears. The play calls may be foggy and the jersey will be too tight, but what was innocently learned in the jersey shines out at an older age. Although life lessons can be learned through everyday activities, lessons such as teamwork, self-confidence, and dealing with failure are only truly learned through sports by young athletes.
