INTRODUCTION The winter season can be a major hassle for some people while others just have to deal with a slight cool down in temperatures. Over the northern portions of the country, people are faced to deal with the harsh conditions that Mother Nature has in store. Some winter seasons are less brutal than others. Besides the typical storm systems that come through the area and drop different types of precipitation whether it is snow, sleet, or freezing rain, there’s another weather event that affects not everyone in the country, but primarily around the Great Lakes.
In this paper, I will discuss what tornadoes are and how they form, what different forms of tornadoes there are, what tornado watches and warning are and give examples of tornadoes in Oklahoma and what destruction they caused, also while providing information about the Doppler radar.
The swiftness, beauty, and absolute daunting sight of tornadoes have haunted minds and pulled at the curiosity of many. As Mother Nature’s fiercest windstorms, tornadoes do not simply lift you up and transport you to the magical Land of Oz. Rather, they habitually throw you around like a rag doll leaving a disaster behind them. Interestingly enough, tornadoes are yet to be fully understood. We know what a tornado is and how it forms but why it forms under various circumstances and not others is still under scrutiny.
In Chicago winter is usually the most dreaded time of the year. It rains, snows, and is just freezing. In january 1985 it was -27℉. In order to go outside in the months of December, January, and February you have to wear a hat, gloves,a scarf and multiple layers of clothes in order to stay warm. Almost every morning you would have to wipe off the snow, frost, and ice off your car. The are also lots of danger because like black ice. Ice is not visible on most roads, this can cause cars to slip. In the winter it get a lot darker a lot earlier. At 4:30 it's close to complete darkness. Removing the snow is hard on a person’s body in more ways than one. What do people need to be aware of when they go to remove snow from their property and how can they avoid these hazards?
In general, data has shown an increase in highly “unusual extreme weather events” since 1992 in the Latin America region and has predicted that these phenomena will become more frequent. These unusual events, coupled with local social and demographic factors, have created emergency conditions in Panama.
When it comes to a natural disaster, there often is no way of seeing what is coming. Sometimes a tornado, flash flood, or hurricane alert might pop up on your phone or appear on the news but it is easy to simply overlook these warnings. You never know
People did many things to prepare for Hurricane Sandy. Many people who lived on or near the coastline were given evacuation orders by government officials. These areas were likely to experience severe flooding. The people who lived in low elevations along the coast were particularly in danger. These people left their homes in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut; some were fortunate enough to find a hotel to stay in or relatives to stay with. Others who weren’t as fortunate waited in community shelters. Organizations such as the American Red Cross opened shelters specifically for people who had to leave their homes because of Hurricane Sandy.
“Ring, click.” You heard that right, that was the sound of sadness. That alarm means only one thing it is Monday! The first day of the week which means I have five days of school sigh, but wait what is that outside? I can barely see, but I can tell it’s white outside, wait what is that? It's snowing! “We are going to have a snow day!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs as I ran through my house!
The communication process is not something that begins when a crisis rears its ugly head rather it is a process that takes place in preparing for a crisis before it happens. While the term crisis represents a blanket term used to describe many situations, each situation is unique, thus presenting different obstacles to overcome. However, with a well-established advanced plan in place an organization places itself in a position to overcome and work around obstacles. The development of a comprehensive crisis management plan is one achieved through effective communication where each member of the crisis management team has an advanced shared understanding of his or her role and responsibility during a time of crisis (du Pr'e, 2005).
Snowed-in a bit yesterday with only a rare store open or two. Today, snow banks are piled high with plows running about, even 20 floors up I can hear them occasionally come and go. Moxie with Mush on his paws and Penelope in her famous red boots still managed to yellow the snow as I picked up a pile or two. We ventured out up West End and down Broadway, having to carry Mr. Moxie at times for he would lift his paw shivering, looking back up at me. Miss Penelope's personality persevered even through the deepest intersections. We would come back home, laying out all our gear to dry just in time for the next potty break to come.
Winter storms occur under a perfect set of conditions. Winter storms deliver strong winds, heavy sleet, rain and snow. There are several types of winter storms and each can cripple entire regions for days or weeks at time. Ice storms, blizzards, lake effects and nor’easters are specific winter storms that occur in temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Like all disasters extreme weather events have to be planned for. A series of unexpected catastrophic natural disasters have shaped the field of emergency management. The actions of the local government, military and volunteers were unprecedented. There were no plans to manage waste, dead bodies, prevent disease or clean up the communities. Focusing disasters led and continue to lead in contingency planning for natural disasters like winter storms.
It was the winter of 2010 when I first saw snow come from the sky and actually stick to the ground from the window of my childhood bedroom. I was eleven years old, in the sixth grade, and before this I had only seen snow when my parents would drive my brother’s and I to Lake Tahoe to see it. In California where I grew up it was extremely rare that it got to temperatures where it would snow, nevertheless actually stick. I remember waking up that morning and going into my parents bedroom and telling them that there was snow. Real snow! After they got up and looked out of their window, I ran down the hall and through the front door. I remember standing with my mouth open to the dark morning sky and tasting the cold frost of fresh snow while still
Our topic is precautions and actions in case of a tornado. According to http://www.homefacts.com/tornadoes/Illinois/Dekalb-County/Dekalb.html the last tornado in DeKalb was in May 2, 2011 and the force was a F1. It lasted for 26 miles and there were zero number of deaths. The worst tornado documented in DeKalb history was in 1990 the force was a F5. It lasted for 30 miles, killed 29 people, and injured 350 people. The F1-F5 stands for the Fujita Scale or “F scale” which measures the intensity of a tornado based on the amount of damage done by a passing tornado over an area. Our problem statement or why it is important to research our paper is most people are unaware of the proper protocol in case of a tornado. Our goal is to protect our fellow classmates, and the citizens of DeKalb County. The objective is to explain what to do before, during, and after a tornado. Overall Illinois has a low risk of tornadoes compared to other states, but with severe weather we receive there is always a possibility for one to occur.
A thunderstorm that produces large amounts of precipitation which reaches the ground should have deep moisture stratums in unstable conditions, causing enough convection to be restricted to the electrification level of the atmosphere, or being lifted by orographic or frontal systems (Rorig and Ferguson, 1999). However, some thunderstorms produce small amounts of precipitation or none. Colson (1960) explained this phenomenon as a result of high-level thunderstorms with high cloud bases where the appropriate conditions for triggering lightning flashes accompanied by precipitation are situated in the upper levels. Rorig and Ferguson (1999) analysed the synoptic patterns of dry thunderstorms and concluded that low moisture levels in the inferior part of the atmosphere coupled with high instability, leads to the evaporation of precipitation prior to reaching the ground level, this way reducing the moisture content of the underlying surface.
