People did many things to prepare for Hurricane Sandy. Many people who lived on or near the coastline were given evacuation orders by government officials. These areas were likely to experience severe flooding. The people who lived in low elevations along the coast were particularly in danger. These people left their homes in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut; some were fortunate enough to find a hotel to stay in or relatives to stay with. Others who weren’t as fortunate waited in community shelters. Organizations such as the American Red Cross opened shelters specifically for people who had to leave their homes because of Hurricane Sandy.
People who lived in Jersey City, New York filled sandbags with sand, and they built sandbag walls against doors and around tunnels to try and keep the water out. Some even boarded up their windows to help prevent flying objects from breaking the glass. Those who kept boats along the coast moved them to places that were safer. People even cut down trees to keep them from flinging into buildings or downing power lines.
Many stores had a shortage of basic supplies. People who weren’t evacuated from their homes began to stock up on necessities. They went to grocery stores and got all kinds of supplies; bread, canned goods, bottled water, gas powered generators, batteries, radios, flashlights. Gas powered generators would help with power outages.
Government officials warned people that once the storm hit it would be dangerous to go outside. Officials encouraged people not to travel. They ordered people to stay off of the freeways where meteorologists forecasted the storm would hit. The subway system in New York was closed, and all flights in or out of the area were cancelled. ...there was no power. It was like a domino effect. They are also changing copper wires to fiber active cables.
They had to change and rebuild things after the sinkhole just like they did with Hurricane Sandy. After the Sinkhole some of the students had to move to Tangerine because there wasn’t enough space for everyone at Lake Windsor without the portables. Old Charley burns, the boss of the civil engineering company, was fired. He didn’t check and make sure that the places were safe to be building things on. He was bribed; he got vacations out of it. Since Charley Burns was fired, Paul’s dad replaced him. Paul’s dad told everybody that with him now the boss things were going to change. He wasn’t going to be bribed, and he was actually going to check and make sure that the places people were building things on were safe, and they weren’t building things on sinkholes.
