Crazy survival stories often dominate the news. Whether it be on the front page of the Sunday paper or the highlight of a late night news show to convince you to stay up just 15 more minutes to see how the story ends, the reason they are so intriguing is because the situations seem impossible. Many people might say that thinking on your feet or courage can get you out of situations, but the one thing that will ultimately determine if you survive is not something you can control. It is luck. When it comes to a natural disaster, there often is no way of seeing what is coming. Sometimes a tornado, flash flood, or hurricane alert might pop up on your phone or appear on the news but it is easy to simply overlook these warnings. You never know
where you will be at the time of striking. It is near impossible to perfectly time your location and surrounding resources when calamity will hit. The nepalese boy, who survived for 5 days under a collapsed parking garage due to the devastating earthquake in 2015, had the will to live, determination, and resilience. After disclosing that he had survived off of butter during the days he was trapped, it was clear that his good luck of being able to detect the food source had saved him.
Survival skills can take over when in a life or death situation. The protagonist, Rainsford, in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a clear example of this. While on the way to hunting expedition Rainsford is thrown overboard his ship and swims to the nearby shore of Ship Trap Island. He explores the island and finds a chateau. He is invited in by the owner, General Zarroff, and they begin to converse. Here Rainsford learns something dark about this man that will lead to him being on the run for his life. He is forced to let his survival skills, resourcefulness, thinking on his feet, and his good eye, take center stage in the fight for his life.
Like Brown told CNN’s Larry King, “I must say, this storm is much bigger than anyone expected.” What should we have to know in case of an emergency, especially if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone. According to Live Science, you have to start with a hurricane plan with your family and find out your zone and local evacuation route. We have to keep in mind the hurricanes are very powerful tropical storms with heavy rains, strong winds and that a hurricane can damage buildings, cars, homes, etc. First of all, always have a hurricane survival kit, during hurricane warning and never ignore evacuation orders. Equally important, prepared your home with flood insurance, buy emergency supplies, plan for your pets, and don’t forget to search for resources for more information about hurricane planning. According to Erik Salna, “Everyone who lives in an area affected by hurricanes needs to take personal responsibility and accountability to be prepared… It has to become a way of life, something you naturally do.” In discussion of how to be prepared in case of a hurricane, one controversial issue has been the disaster of hurricane Katrina. On the one hand, we need to keep in mind that is up to us to try to be prepared in case of a hurricane warning. On the other hand, if you ignored evacuation orders you may regretted later on in life, don’t
Hazards pose risk to everyone. Our acceptance of the risks associated with hazards dictates where and how we live. As humans, we accept a certain amount of risk when choosing to live our daily lives. From time to time, a hazard becomes an emergent situation. Tornadoes in the Midwest, hurricanes along the Gulf Coast or earthquakes in California are all hazards that residents in those regions accept and live with. This paper will examine one hazard that caused a disaster requiring a response from emergency management personnel. Specifically, the hazard more closely examined here is an earthquake. With the recent twenty year anniversary covered by many media outlets, the January 17, 1994, Northridge, California earthquake to date is the most expensive earthquake in American history.
An extreme environment takes strength, both emotional and physical, but even so the odds are not in a survivor's favor. With that said, there are those who rise to the occasion. Nando Parrado and his crew, from "I Will Survive", and Aron Ralston , from "127 Hours", are evidence. Nando and his crew had survived a plane crash, and continued to survive in the bitter, cold Andes for 72 days. While, Aron survived a 800 boulder crushing his arm, trapping him in an isolated slot canyon, alone, and without resources for five and have days. Struggling to make decisions, that challenge their beliefs and goes against their instincts, and having to survive in an extreme environment in their particular situation are the two major challenges Nando and Aron face as they stretch themselves to adapt, surviving only by clinging to their will to survive.

Next time you think about being in a survival situation, look more into a region you are not familiar with and maybe look into classes to be prepared to such situation. The documentary Surviving The Andes Plane Crash is a good source of knowing how events unfolded in the crash of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 of 1972. Through persistence, innovation, and focus the survivors of the crash were able to be rescued, and showed great traits to learn
Survival is indeed a word that can change a human’s perspective on what they need to do to remain alive. In order to survive, people have been known to go to great lengths and to do things they would not ordinarily do. I have noticed this throughout my life by watching movies, and reading books. Most of the time, it is the main character who comes face to face with death, and does anything to keep themselves alive. I have set up a few great examples that show’s people in their survival situations, and what they will do to get out alive.
Once Aron Ralston gets himself trapped in a canyon for five days, he doesn’t expect himself to come out alive. By getting himself stuck in the canyon, Ralston has certainly ran into trouble, but what is important is how he uses his intelligence and survival skills to overcome it. E. An ill-prepared climber with little experience likely couldn’t survive for such a long time in such a dangerous place. Ralston survived because he knew how to use his tools to his advantage, and keep himself alive long enough to escape the canyon. A. That is not to say that he definitely would’ve survived in the canyon, for he was merely able to miraculously beat the odds. He likely couldn’t have survived against the heat, cold, dehydration, and loss of circulation without conserving his water, constantly moving himself around the boulder and amputating his arm. Ralston didn’t expect to survive by the fifth day, showing how much of a miracle it was even with all the traits he had. E. Ralston’s mental state also helped him survive. During his time in the canyon, he remained calm and collected and had positive visions of the future and his escape. A. A strong positive mindset played an important role in Ralston’s actions. Without the idea of escaping the canyon, there would be no reason to save himself. If that were the case, he might as well go through a slow and painful death. L. As a skilled climber, Ralston used his knowledge of survival to his advantage, when it came to avoiding
Natural disasters have been the major killer of our race, since they are unstoppable. Although the rapidly improving technology nowadays can predict the size and estimated arrival time of the natural disasters, it cannot protect people from getting hit by them. Humans have been protecting themselves by living in a safe shelter, which ranges from ancient caves to earthquake-proof buildings, but the data released every year tells people that the natural disasters cannot be stopped. The accuracy and precision of disaster forecasts reached its limit. The country knows where the disaster starts, when it hits them, and how big it is.
... After a tornado strikes an area, there are hazards that people need to be aware of, including downed electrical lines, debris from buildings and other structures, and potential for more storms. The desire for a lot of people to go back to their homes is expected but discouraged because it can interfere with rescue and damage control operations, including restoration of utilities and cleaning up possible hazardous spills. It is important for people to monitor emergency information from radio and television stations so that they can be aware of these hazards. The aftermath of tornadoes also creates hazards of dehydration and heat injuries because of the lack of fresh water supplies and electricity to keep areas cool.

Technology has effectively improved the predictions and understanding of very serious natural disasters and storms. Radars and Satellites have greatly helped scientists predict the pathways of storms and weather fronts. Due to the advancement of technology scientists have started to learn and understand the devilments and anatomies of the most feared natural disasters such as Hurricanes, Tornadoes, and Snowstorms. Scientist’s predictions and discoveries have helped the public get into a safer location. Weather technology advanced and is continuing to improve to help prevent casualties and economic loses. Weather Technology has came a long way from the pioneering days of storm predictions, If the technology continues to improve there is a great possibility that the public will become more prepared and damages will be at a minimum.
Thanks to the latest technologies, we have a well-organized early warning system. So we are well informed about upcoming threats to our lives. The technology not only provides us pre-hand information about possible natural disasters but also we get well-planned strategies to
Will you ever be part of nature’s disasters? Most natural disasters can be foreseen with the aid of advanced technology, but, overall, nature’s wonders occur unexpectedly. The majority of the human population does not know what to do before, during, and after a catastrophic event. The most common questions asked are: what is it, where will it take place, when will it happen, and who will be affected. It is important to have an understanding of what natural disasters may be and what could be experienced during a time of chaos.
