Tolan, Jake, a bad boy, achieved greatness with the help of the family he was living with, the Applewhites. Jake had burnt down his old school in Rhode Island and no other schools were willing to take him in, except the Applewhites. The Applewhites school is called the Creative Academy, which is run by the Applewhite adults. The children can learn or work on any project they want, and they are very unorganized. Jake is the outcast there, though, because he smokes, cusses, and hates not having a TV or video games. It is extremely hard for him to adjust. Jake was inspired to be great because of threats, opinions of his actions, and discovering his passion.
Cedric is an unusual student to walk the halls of Ballou High. Unlike most of his peers, he actually wants to make something of himself; he does his homework, he studies and he works on extra credit projects. A narcissist is one who believes “he or she is ‘special’ and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special” people. They exploit others for their own advantage, lack empathy, and are “preoccupied with fantasies” or ideals that can be unrealistic. They believe they are the “primary importance in everybody’s life”. (“Narcissistic Personality”) Henry James’ theme in his short story, “The Beast in the Jungle”, is about a man, who is so egotistical and self-absorbed that he misses what life has to offer him, in particular, love, because of the narcissistic behavior he is doomed to live a life of loneliness and misery. John Marcher, the protagonist of “The Beast in the Jungle”, is about a narcissistic upper-class man who believes his life is to be defined by some unforetold event. He focuses only on himself and as a result, he neglects everything and everyone in his life. Marcher meets May Bartram, a woman who knows his secret, and instead of pursuing a romantic relationship with her, or even a genuine friendship, he uses her for his own benefit. Henry James utilizes a variety of literary devices to convey this theme in his story, such as the title, symbolism, dialogue, and the use of a limited third-person narrative. Henry James leaves us our first clue to the theme in the title, “The Beast in the Jungle”. When one thinks of a beast, they typically imagine something big and ferocious; Marcher’s ego was just that.

A rattlesnake roundup is an event usually hosted in Western parts of the United States like Texas where people slaughter thousands of defenseless rattlesnakes. Mr. Davis started at Hempfield as a middle school physical education teacher, soon being swept away by fate to the place he finds himself most content. The riddle of the shepherd and the black snake reveals Zarathustra's, and by extension Nietzsche’s struggle to accept the ugly truths about life. The snake is similar to the dwarf in that Zarathustra perceives it as a bothersome, and in this case dangerous, external force that one must fight against. In reality the serpent must be accepted. The ugly truths may be unpleasant. They may force one to view life in a fundamentally different way, but they are necessary to gain a true understanding of oneself and life’s purpose. Zarathustra is undergoing his own set of metamorphoses. The vision of the shepherd and the snake embodies the progression that Zarathustra is enduring. He is being confronted by the black serpent of temporality and must learn to accept it as a part of his nature, rather than viewing it as an external burden.
