Health promotion is all about improving everyone’s health, an important health issue to date is tobacco control in New Zealand. Smoking is not only dangerous for those who smoke, as 5000 people die each year due to second hand-smoke (MOH, 2014). A survey taken in 2011 by the Ministry of Health showed that Maori continue to have high smoking rates at 41 percent and that two in five are smoking. The high percentage of smokers is strongly correlated to the low socioeconomic status of most Maori’s throughout New Zealand. It has been found by Salmond and Crampton (2000) that Maori have a lower life expentancy as well as a lower average socio-economic status due to being in deprived geographical areas. Many Maori and Non-Maori people lack access …show more content…
Through education, many people will learn why taking the first step toward better health care is necessary for the future health of Aotearoa. However, statistics are already improving as there are more health care facilities reaching those that could not afford to make regular trips to their local GP. As part of the campaign ‘Smokefree 2025’, the Ministry of Health is working to improve the education on the whole population and provide more medical services, including mobile care (Edwards et al., 2014). The purpose is for the government to get behind this campaign and make it a realistic future for New Zealand, with communication on how and what the future of New Zealand’s healthcare has to offer Maori. Maori Affairs Committee made smokefree 2025 their election campaign which not only became a popular topic to discuss why this is an important issue, but also how they will achieve this (MOH, 2014). The treaty of Waitangi has a great influence in this campaign as the Maori Affairs Committee use the treaty as their back bone to set up facilities for …show more content…
According to (Collins & Lapsley, 2008), the economical cost of smoking was estimated at $31 billion. The Australian Ministry of Health (2014) believes that leadership is the key to improving the health of their country by taking action to drive australians to better their health. They also believe that health begins when you are born, giving everyone key opportunities to improve throughout their life (MOH, 2014). The Australian’s strategy to decrease tobacco use is to increase tax and public education (Roberts et al., 2009). It is important to empower the people of Australia with such a common disease because it can be so easily prevented. More education to the public means a higher level of understanding as to how bad tobacco is for your body, and what a serious addiction it is. As well as increased prices, support for smokers, and restricting advertising tobacco, the programme also includes a decrease in indigenous smoking where about 20 percent of indigenous deaths are caused (MOH, 2014). A strategy where it educates everyone at a level where they are able to take control over their health, and make their own decisions is a successful strategy for the Australian Health Sector. By taking action on health issues not only motivates people, but gives people more understanding about what they are entitled to for their health care. Alcohol and smoking were listed in

Deadly Choices is a school and community-based Aboriginal health promotion and illness prevention program in Queensland, and the Deadly Choices Community Program is aiming to educate Aboriginal Australians about health knowledge regarding risk factors of chronic illness such as diet, physical activity, and substance use, then increase their engagement of community events in order to help them make healthy choices and have healthy lives (Malseed, 2013). In 2014, a study demonstrated that this program has been successful in improving Aboriginal Australians’ short-term knowledge about how their lifestyles and daily behaviours are highly associated with health, which effectively improves their health literacy through

Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
This essay is aimed to explore, analyse and discuss smoking in adults. Smoking is a public health issue as such is one of the major contributors to high mortality and ill-health in the adults which is preventable (Health and Excellence Care (NICE) (2012). The United Kingdom (UK) is known to have the highest number of people with a history of smoking among people with low socio-economic status (Scriven and Garman, 2006; Goddard and Green, 2005). Smoking is considered a serious epidemic in the UK and the National institute for Health and Excellence Care (NICE, 2012) stated that 28% of adults with low economic status are tobacco smokers compared with 13% of those with economic status or having professional incomes. Furthermore almost 80,000 people died in England in 2011 as a result of smoking related issues and 9,500 admissions of children died due to being second hand smokers (WHO, 2005). This essay focuses on definition of smoking, the aim is to underline the relationship between smoking and the determinants of health and then, the size, prevalence, and morbidity trend of smoking will be explored. Furthermore, some public health policies introduced to confront the issues around smoking will be investigated and finally, the roles of nurses will identify health needs the public so as to promote good health and their wellbeing.
The Victorian public health and wellbeing plan establishes a new and ambitious population health vision for the state: a Victoria free of the avoidable burden of disease and injury. The priority areas of the Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Plan are healthier eating and active living, tobacco-free living, reducing harmful alcohol and drug use, improving mental health, preventing violence and injury, and improving sexual and reproductive health, the priority area that I will mainly be focusing in this essay is tobacco free living. The three determinants of Health that I will be discussing/ analysing in this piece are the biological, physical environment and social determinants
To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realise aspiration, to satisfy needs and to change or cope with the environment (WHO, 1986). Health promotion should work through effective community action where community members set the priorities, plan strategies and implement them for achieving better health, better social network help in promoting good health among young indigenous people , it also help them to engage in physical activity thereby taken them off the need to take Alcohol or drugs just to feel better. It help them to reduce obesity and also eating health food. There is a growing evidence that individual social capital can influence health and behaviour in a positive way through social support, social influence, social participation and access to material resources. The improvement and maintenance of health is dependent not only on individual behaviours but also on the behaviour of significant others and the ability for fruitful communication within social networks. The 1986 Atawa Charter (WHO, 1986) established five action areas of health promotion which include building healthy public policy, creating supporting environments, strengthening community actions, developing personal skills and reorienting health

The sale of cigarettes and tobacco is a multi-billion dollar industry, but is it truly worth all the problems that stem from their use? Health care costs are extremely high due to all the health problems associated with cigarettes and tobacco. Even though research has proven time and time again the harmful effects of cigarettes, and the rising cost of health care caused by cigarettes, our government will not take a stand and stop all manufacturing of the horrible toxins. Every year, new medical reports are issued regarding the harmful effects of smoking cigarettes. Hundreds of thousands of people around the world die every year from diseases caused by smoking.
In New Zealand, there are several major health issues for 15- 24 year olds. All three interviewees thought drinking issues were a health concern for their age group. They also said that mental health, mens sexual health, unsafe sex and unhealthy eating habits were other major issues. This was a good reflection of the status of health issues in New Zealand, although they did not state unintentional injury, general drug use, self-harm and suicide. Prevention and education are potential focus areas for health educators, in order to reduce these issues for 15-24 year olds.
Aotearoa is the home to Te reo Maori where is should be promoted and encouraged. The Treaty of Waitangi is a very important document to New Zealand. It is an agreement that was drawn up by representatives of the British Crown and Maori Hapu and Iwi. It was first signed at the Bay of Islands on February 6th, 1840. There has been a lot of debate over the years about the translation of words between the English and Te Reo Maori versions of the text and the differences in the word meaning over the who languages. In this assignment I am going to cover the rights and responsibilities that the treaty contains and an explanation of the differences in wordings and I am also going to contextualise my understanding of the differences of wording against the Maori Worldview and the Declaration of Independence.
