Sleep. What is sleep? According to thefreedictionary.com, sleep is defined as a natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually close and consciousness is completely or partially lost, so that there is a decrease in bodily movement and responsiveness to external stimuli. During sleep the brain in humans and other mammals undergoes a characteristic cycle of brain-wave activity that includes intervals of dreaming (The Free Dictionary by Farlax, 2002).
The amount of sleep a student gets, greatly affects academic performance. Getting a good night's sleep could make or break someone's whole future when looking at the big picture. Apnea is when breathing is messed up when sleeping. People who have not gone to the doctor and have sleep apnea, will stop breathing multiple times throughout the night. Meaning, the brain probably doesn’t get the oxygen it needs. There are two different types of apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea, which is the more common one, deals with a blocked airway. The soft tissue in the back of the throat will collapse when sleeping. Central sleep apnea, the other type, deals with the brain. The brain isn’t able to signal respiratory muscles to breathe. These diseases can happen to anyone. Risk factors would include, being of the male gender, overweight, or over the age of 40. Having a big neck or nostrils could also be a risk. If someone has family history, gastroesophagel reflux, or nasal obstruction, they are at risk. If one does not go to the doctor for sleep apnea to be treated, possible effects could be high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, depression, and headaches. We live our entire life in two states, sleep and awake1. These two states are characterized by two distinct behaviors. For instance, the brain demonstrates a well-defined activity during non-REM sleep (nREM) that is different when we are awake. It is unclear whether this statement means that sleep is a state of global behavioural inactivity or the state of the global nervous system. The switch hypothesis developed from the fact that sleep can be initiated without fatigue and it is reversible1. It was hypothesized that there is something in the brain that has the ability to control the whole brain and initiate sleep. Studies have found a good candidate that demonstrated this ability3. They found a group of neurons in the Ventrolateral Preoptic (VLPO) nucleus. It was a good candidate because it was active during sleep, has neuronal output that can influence the wakefulness pathway, and lesion in the area followed reduce sleep3. The idea that there is something that can control the whole brain and result sleep state supports the idea that sleep is a global state of the nervous system.

For instance, student A is a freshman at Ball State University. This student only sleeps for 6 hours because of bad sleeping habits and later on he sleeps for only 4 hours because of the new environment which has many factors that affect his sleep schedule such as social life, school activities or extracurricular activities. Then sleep deprivation is starting to affect him. He have a test the next day and studied the whole night and only slept for 2 hours. The next day, while he was having the test, he started to feel very tired, sleepy and stressed. He couldn’t concentrate on the test so he failed the test. He started to feel more stressed because of bad grades which might make him take the course again. He couldn’t sleep for more than 4 hours and these bad cycle repeats. Moreover, high stress could also affect the emotion of the students. It can also cause depression which can significantly decrease the academic performance and grade point average of a student. This statement shows just how important of a role sleep is in life. “Approximately 70% of college students report disturbances in sleep including poor sleep quality, insufficient sleep, and irregular sleep patterns” (DeMartini, Fucito 1164). Most of the time college students experience difficulties with sleep because of their varying schedules. On the weekdays, students will sleep between classes, and stay up late trying to get work done. On the weekends, they stay up late and wake later in the day. “According to the National Sleep Foundation, 59% of adults 18 to 29 years of age describe themselves as night-owls” (Gaultney 91). Our bodies are synchronized with the 24-hour cycle due to the circadian rhythm (Myers, DeWall 100). If students cannot fall asleep early because their “biological clock” is messed up due to stress or other reasons, they cannot get enough sleep by the time the morning comes. Research has shown that typically people who get up earlier perform better in school, have more initiative and are less likely to be depressed (Myers, DeWall 101).
