According to Elkstrand (2012), “Good leaders must learn to handle the mistakes that they make. Making mistakes should be seen as a form of learning – they are synonymous with growth and progress. If you haven’t failed, you aren’t trying very hard. Mistakes should simply be catalysts that encourage greater growth” (Elkstrand, 2012). In this paper I will talk about the six pitfalls and provide examples for these pitfalls. Failing to Respond to Employees Emails According to Comaford (2013), the first pitfall is failing to respond to employees emails. If employees work long hours and do a high-stress task one after the other, they will burn out. Of course employees sometimes have to give extra effort, but no one can give that kind of effort all the time (Comaford, 2013). The impact of this pitfall is that burnt out employees can’t give their best effort ever, because they just don’t have the will anymore. The leader of this company should set hours and make sure they are enforced, so no one gets burnt out. Example of Burning Out Employees My example for this pitfall also comes from when I was cleaning rooms at a hotel. Everyone cleaning rooms at this hotel worked their hardest, but if the bosses didn’t think they were working fast enough, they would push them harder. This wasn’t good, because cleaning hotel rooms is hard work, and telling us to go faster definitely burnt us out. The next problem is an Autocratic Leadership. In an autocratic leadership employees have no say. All decisions are made by the management. This is a problem because even though management may know what is best for the company, they do not know what is best for the employees. Examples of emotional exhaustion includes; feeling drained by work, fatigue in the morning, frustrated, and do not want to work with others. Depersonalization is when a person has become emotionally hardened by their job, treat others like objects, do not care what happens to them, and feel others blame them. A low feeling of accomplishment also results from burnout. A person is unable to deal with problems effectively, identify or understand others problems, and no longer feel excited by their job. Currently, employees are being put on pressure by the organization in order to achieve the set goals. Nevertheless, the employees are willing to work for longer hours in order to earn more money to satisfy their increasing needs (Gullotta et al., 2003:23). On the other hand, the organizations have been compelling their subordinates to work for longer hours as a way of punishment or increasing the possibility of achieving the set goals within the stipulated time. This aspect has increased the number of depressed people in the population. With many people being unaware of how to deal with depression, they are turning to smoking. As a result, long working hours have been associated with smoking behaviors (Burke & Cooper 2008:46). The most affected people are the young people. This behavior has increased the number of people suffering from cancer and other respiratory related diseases in the world. Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266).
