Project 1: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
My freshman year of high school everything was so new to me. I was at a new school, with new people, in a new environment. I wasn’t prepared for high school in even the slightest bit. My school did not do a good job at preparing me for the real world. What they don’t tell you when you finish eighth grade, is that you’re going to have to read a book over the summer. So, here I was first day of freshman year and the teacher goes, “Alright class time to take out your summer reading books. We are going to do a lot with them over the next few weeks so make sure you bring them every class!” My heart dropped. Summer reading assignment? I quickly turned to my left and ask the person sitting next to me if they had any idea what the teacher was talking about. With an attitude, like I was distracting her, she quickly told me we were supposed to pick a fiction book to read at the beginning of the summer. I thought my life was over. As soon as I got home from school that day I researched for easy fiction books to read for a ninth grader. “Percy Jackson: The

He has the Dyslexia and ADHD, which impair his reading abilities. He also has a D-average in high school but he did teach me some good life lessons and shape me into who I am today. What he taught me was that, even if you aren’t the smartest or the best, doesn’t mean you can’t be just as successful, if not even more successful than everyone else. Percy taught me that my greatest weaknesses could also be my greatest strengths. He took his life and changed his perspective completely. Percy taught me that if I take life and look at it a little differently, it could make the world of a difference. Life is all about the way you look at things. Percy Jackson also shaped me as a person by teaching me to never give up. Even if something is hard and I think I can’t do it, I can. You have to learn to take what life and hands you, and make the best of
Percy attended school through the eighth grade in Alabama’s public schools. Going to high school was not an option for Percy, since he was a black person. But that didn’t stop Percy from going into college to pursue his dream.
In this essay I’m writing about Theseus and the Minotaur and The Lightning Thief. Theseus and the Minotaur is about when Theseus discovers that people of Athens are being given to the minotaur. Theseus slays the minotaur, and restores peace in Athens after sailing home safely, but then finds out his dad killed himself. What The Lightning Thief and Theseus and the Minotaur have in common is, both main characters take big risks even though they are dangerous. Even though The Lighting Thief and Theseus have different outcomes, they both show that taking risks can be dangerous, but it’s worth the risk if it’s for a good cause.
Did you know that in Greek mythology and Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief that some character’s fate has been decided? In Greek mythology, some heroes were fated to kill their family members, while Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief was fated to fail or have a surprising ending. Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and Greek mythology both have very dramatic fates that happened to them. In Greek, Mythology heroes would try to change and avoid their fate, whereas in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief the heroes just accept their fate.
My original thought when comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie and Classical mythology was that there would be many more references to the myth of Perceus than any other myth throughout the movie in its entirety. That’s where I was wrong. After watching the movie again and researching the different hero myths my opinion has changed. My new thoughts are that the movie is not influenced by the myth of Perceus any more than other hero myths. The movie ties together many different heroes’ stories and mixes them together to make a wonderful story about a young boy. The movie was based on a book series written by Rick Riordan.
“Suspense combines curiosity with fear and pulls them up a rising slope.” - Mason Cooley. These emotions that suspense creates are intended to keep viewers interested and entertained while watching, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”, directed by, Chris Columbus. “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” was filled with suspense. The three major elements the director used to generate suspense were conflict, sympathetic attachment to the protagonist and foreshadowing.
The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan is a fantasy- adventure novel that is based on Greek mythology. It's the second novel in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy Jackson has been having nightmares about his satry friend Grover Underwood. The first dream involving Grover running from an unknown force and hiding in wedding shop. At school a group of Laestrygoians attack Percy and his classmates in a game of dodgeball, but is saved by one of his friends Tyson and Annabeth Chase, one of his friends from camp. Annabeth takes Percy and Tyson to Camp Half Blood, the only safe place for demigods, which are kids who are children of humans and gods. All three of them take the
This man cares more about the wants and needs of the people around him then his own. Percy is brave in the toughest of situations, and stands up for what is right. Percy Jackson has even saved the world twice, by leading armies he organised on his own.
In the text Percy got water thrown on him by a bully. The water gives him strength because he is the son of Poseidon, the God of sea. He causes water from a nearby fountain to rise and knock the bully down. (Riordan, 9) The directors changed this to a subtler hint that tells the audience that Percy is Poseidon’s son. They show Percy being able to remain under water for long periods of time, longer than the average human. During the movie Percy also says he likes being in and under water. They changed this aspect of the book to slowly reveal who Percy’s father is. This was not a bad change and in a way added more mystery to Percy’s
Percy Jackson is the main character in this story, who is a demi god, who mortals are after. His name is short for Perseus and his father is one the big three gods, Poseidon. He is suffering from dyslexia and ADHD, which could be deliberately added to the character by Riordan, to show he is meant to be a hero, and not to do well in school. This shows that school is not what he is good at, and he is destined to be a hero and save people.
8th grade, 8th grade from the opening day to the signing of the yearbooks. This is the year of memories, goodbyes, and regrets. 8th grade and I’m still realizing that there are people in the world that would die to go to a school like this. A school where every body knows everyone’s name, respects everyone, and where violence and fighting are about as common as the Yankees missing the playoffs. When I’m done with my homework and go to bed, as the days of 8th grade wind down, summer will come and go, and I will find myself in one of those giant, scary places called high school.
Both Percy and Perseus had a god as their father, Perseus’s father was Zeus and Percy’s father was Poseidon, but their mothers were mortal. This made them demigods. Demigods usually have special powers like super strength or being able to fly, however they are in human form. Also, they are raised humans on Earth. Percy was developed to have a different lifestyle then Perseus as being a normal, American teenager. Perseus, however, was in contact with gods, such as, “As he stood at a crossroad wondering which way to go, Athena and Hermes suddenly showed up.” (D'aulaires,117) A king wanted to marry Perseus’s mother but she refused because he was ruthless. The author states, “ He wanted her for his queen. In vain did Danaё turn him away.”(D'aulaires,116) Percy’s mother,Sally Jackson, married a guy, Gabe, who was horrible to both Percy and Sally. Gabe treated Sally like she was a maid and Percy hated that, and as soon as he returned the lightning, they did not need Gabe anymore. In conclusion, Sally left Gabe(Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief).
In the story Percy Jackson, the Lightning Thief, a boy named Percy Jackson has to face a conflict that decides if he and his father, Poseidon, survive Zeus' wrath. At the beginning, Percy finds that odd things are happening after he vaporizes his math teacher, Mrs. Dodd, at a museum right before summer. After this grueling experience, he went home to find his mom not at home and smelly Gabe, his step-father, sitting there playing poker. Minutes later, Sally, Percy's mother, walks in and declares that she and Percy would be taking a vacation that same day. Then, she and Percy drove to Long Island and settled down in their cabins to sleep. At that time it had started raining and at midnight Grover, Percy's friend, started banging on the door.
The first novel in the series, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, is where Percy's Hero's Journey begins, encompassing the first five stages. The Ordinary World, the first stage, introduces the main hero. "The hero, uneasy, uncomfortable or unaware, is introduced sympathetically so the audience can identify with the situation or dilemma" (Campbell). Percy Jackson, a twelve-year-old diagnosed with both dyslexia and ADHD, lives in New York with his loving, overworked mother and abusive stepfather. He begins his story attending a boarding school for "troubled youth" and has a less than spectacular time being the new kid.
High school is meant to be the time of your life, but for most seniors just like me it can be some of the most emotional and crazy time. The things in my past make me who I am today, and the things I do now are the first footsteps into the future. I’ve learned a lot about myself in these past four years, and I still have so much learning to do. This is my high school story; the good, bad, and the ugly.
It was the second semester of fourth grade year. My parents had recently bought a new house in a nice quite neighborhood. I was ecstatic I always wanted to move to a new house. I was tired of my old home since I had already explored every corner, nook, and cranny. The moment I realized I would have to leave my old friends behind was one of the most devastating moments of my life. I didn’t want to switch schools and make new friends. Yet at the same time was an interesting new experience.
