Good Screen Production? Directors have been turning books into movies for many years. Fans love seeing their favorite books become screen productions. Often the movie is a complete failure that barely resembles the books and causes an upset among fans and book authors. However, once every few disappointments there lies a good film that does the book justice. A film that satisfies the fans and the author. “Percy Jackson the lightning thief” is a story about a young boy who tells a story about being a half blood. A half blood is a child that is half human, and half God. Percy discovered his unique bloodline while simultaneously discovering that his life was in danger because of it. He goes to a camp called camp half-blood where there were others …show more content…
like him and he was safe from danger. During his time, there a problem arises and it’s up to him and his friends to set off and solve it. Later after this fan pleasing book was published, it was turned into a movie. The movie was called Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the lightning thief. One difference between the book and the film is the age of Percy Jackson.
Throughout the book Percy was 12 years old and was in sixth grade. (Riordan) Life altering situations had accrued which caused him to have to mature a lot faster than an average twelve-year-old. However, in the film Percy was a 16-year-old teenager. (Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the lightning thief). At the age of 16 boys already going through puberty and figuring out who they are as they inch closer to adult hood. By the directors making this change it makes Percy’s transition into adulthood less dramatic. If he was 12 in the movie the audience would be more sympathetic of how fast he had to transition and be more responsible for his life and the lives of the people he loves. The directors most likely made this change to appeal to the audience so that the teens of the time can relate more to Percy’s character. This was a good strategy for getting a wide range of people to watch the movie and was a good way to target teenagers to view the movie as …show more content…
well. An additional change that was made in the film was Percy and his friends mode of transportation to one of the scenes. In the text Percy in his friends take a taxi to the hotel; most likely because none of them were old enough to drive. (Riordan, 257). But in the book one of Percy’s friends is driving and he burst into the hotel doors in a stolen Maserati. The directors made this change to make the movie more enjoyable and exciting. By the directors making this change it makes the characters seem that they have more of a wild courageous side. This was a good change not only because it made the scene more interesting but also because it gives the viewers more insight into the character’s minds and shows that although they have some adult responsibilities, they are still young. The directors also change the signs that Percy shows that lets the audience know he was the son of a God.
In the text Percy got water thrown on him by a bully. The water gives him strength because he is the son of Poseidon, the God of sea. He causes water from a nearby fountain to rise and knock the bully down. (Riordan, 9) The directors changed this to a subtler hint that tells the audience that Percy is Poseidon’s son. They show Percy being able to remain under water for long periods of time, longer than the average human. During the movie Percy also says he likes being in and under water. They changed this aspect of the book to slowly reveal who Percy’s father is. This was not a bad change and in a way added more mystery to Percy’s
character. Another big difference that was made between the novel and the screen production was the relationship between Percy and one of his female friends. In the book Percy and his friend’s relationship was just that, they were friends. They worked together and handled business. However, in the film the directors made them have more of a romantic connection. They made it clear that the characters were attracted to one another. The directors did this to add a sense of romance to the movie. They knew it would appeal to more people if they gave a feel of “what happens next” between the 2 main characters. They shouldn’t have made this change because it feeds into the stereotype that boys and girls can never just be friends. Lastly the directors changed the film by making Percy have an electronic device. In the book, it was known that electronic devices attract monsters. However, in the movie Percy had an iPod touch. He used it frequently and even killed a monster by seeing its reflection on the iPod touch. The directors changed this aspect to modernize the movie, and make it more relatable. Although there is a risk of directors making disastrous movie out of a good book, fans love the idea of seeing their oh so beloved characters come to life. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the lightning thief, was an overall great movie despite the several changes that were made. The directors did a great job of modernizing the film and producing what some people might call a masterpiece.
The struggle for power relates to the lightning thief because in chapter 20 Percy battles Ares . Percy Jackson stated, “My body thought for me . The water seemed to push me into the air and i capluted over him, slashing as i came down “.I chose this quote because it was the moment that Percy uses his power . “ All that meant was my mom really had been squeezed into nothingness, dissovled into yellow light”.” I was alone. An orphan . I would have to live with … Smelly Gabe?”.
Percy’s relationship with other characters reveal a lot about who he is.The feelings with his mother is that there close. Percy feelings his dad is he thinks he’s a coward and Percy doesn't like his step father. Percy's feelings with his mom is that they are both close because in the text it says “But ever since, my mom went out of her way to eat blue. She baked blue birthday cakes. She mixed blueberry smoothies. She bought blue-corn tortilla chips and brought home blue candy from the shop. This—along with keeping her maiden name, Jackson, rather than calling herself Mrs. Ugliano—was proof that she wasn't totally suckered by Gabe. She did have a rebellious streak, like me.” This shows they are close because he calls her mom and cares about
Once he was back in Santa Monica he fought Ares and found out he stole both the magic items. He got help from someone at the camp but, Percy did not know who it was yet. Percy won the battle and gave back the gods what matter most to them. When he goes to his mother’s house he finds out that his mother was still alive because Hades had been happy with the crown. Percy makes it back to camp and finds out that the one who betrayed him was Luke. Luke had stolen the items and had given them to his father to hide from everyone. Furthermore, the reason Luke did this was because the king of Titians had told him that he could he free and on his own if Luke was part of his army. Then out of nowhere a scorpion that almost kills him is out on Percy by Luke. Percy had to decide if he wanted to train to fight Luke for revenge or to spend time with his mother in the summer. Even though Percy needs to train he decides to be with his mother and work extra hard the time he is at the camp. Percy could not be
Within this novel, the main character, Percy Jackson, is depicted to fit the universal archetype of a hero on a quest. Furthermore, Poseidon, Percy's father, shows the archetype of Magi with the guidance he provides Percy without him ever meeting him. On his quest to retrieve Zeus’ lightning bolt, the character of Luke also serves as a Hermes archetype and one of joker. He shows up right when the hero is about to make a breakthrough. Clearly, the characters demonstrate an archetypal prevalence that serves to develop the novel in the mythological type. With relation to modern life, Percy Jackson serves as an archetypal character that symbolizes goodness. He is a typical quiet young teenager with the additional issues of dyslexia and ADHD. He is an only child who lives in New York with his mother and step father. As the plot unravels, we learn that Percy, in his goodness, would do anything to protect his mother from
Therefore, Percy Jacksons conflict would be that he doesn't want to be a half-blood. Also, he always had ADHD and dylexia. Throughout the book he struggles in class because of his ADHD. Besides that Percy always struggled with dyslexia because he gets easily distracted. On top
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie is about a young boy who has just discovered that he is a demi-god Percy Jackson. His father is Poseidon and his mother has been keeping it from him for many years. There is a lightning bolt that is stolen from Zeus on Mt. Olympus and Zeus believes that Percy has stolen it and demands its return by the summer solstice. In the mean time Percy gets attacked by multiple magical and mythological beings. There is a camp that demi-gods are safe from these things which is where Percy’s mother and his protector, Grover, take him to. This is where Percy’s journey begins. After a few days of being at the camp he realizes what he has to do. His mother was taken by Hades to the underworld and Percy has to save her all while trying to prove to Zeus that he did not steal the Lighting bolt.
For starters, Percy is the son of Poseidon, which I think is pretty awesome. Being the son of Poseidon also means that he can practically breath underwater without requiring those nasty gills people see on fish. Besides being able to breath underwater, Percy is also pretty great at being the comical relief in those tense monster fighting situations. Also, since Percy used to be the only main character in Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, I’m already used to the way he acts and talks to other characters. In all I love that Rick brought my favorite character Percy back into the
The book that I read and the movie that I watched is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The book was written by the British author, J.K Rowling, and the movie was directed by the English director and producer, Mike Newell. The main characters are Harry Potter (portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). The book was first released in the United States of America and the United Kingdom on July 8, 2000 . The movie had its premiere in London on November 6, 2005. It is classified as a mystery/fantasy genre for both the movie and the book. The story starts with Harry returning to Hogwarts for his fourth year, where the Triwizard tournament between the three well-known schools of magic, Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang, is about to begin, wherein 1 champion aged 17 and above,
His road of trials primarily consists of his run-ins with Medusa at Aunty Em’s Gnome Emporium, Echidna at the St. Louis Gateway Arch, and Procrustes the stretcher in Los Angeles. All of these situations were challenging ordeals, which Percy had to walk into without minimal knowledge of, even with Annabeth’s help. Furthermore, after jumping into the river at the Gateway Arch, Percy had his meeting with the goddess. In this case, the goddess was a sea nymph who reminded Percy that Poseidon was on his side and provided help for later ordeals. In the Underworld, Percy could have saved his mother and left one of his friends, or even himself, behind, yet he chose to finish his quest and find Zeus’s lightning bolt instead. This was his temptation from the true path, proving that he is worthy of being a hero. While trying to solve this case, he reached the apotheosis of this arc; he defeated Ares in battle. In defeating a god in battle, Percy proved himself to be godlike, more so than merely being the son of Poseidon. After learning that Ares had the bolt the whole time, Percy returns it to Zeus, meeting with Poseidon and finishing the book on good terms with his father. The ultimate boon for Percy in this book was understanding that his mother and his friends were capable. Overall, Percy’s arc in The Lightning Thief conforms to the initiation of the hero’s
Percy Jackson is considered a hero by displaying in the chapter being o risky. One example of Percy being risky is shown on page 138. In this chapter it describes Percy getting his very first quest from Chiron. On chapter 9 page 138, it states “ So, I have to find the stupid lightning bolt”. Another example of Percy being risky is Grover helping Percy from dying. On page 240 it states “ he had grabbed me by the shirt, Annabeth on the arm, and was trying to pull us out of a crash landing”. Displaying the trait considered Percy being risky by being able to accept the quest of retrieving Zeus’ lightning bolt while helping his. Father even though he never claimed Percy. Another reason why Percy is risky because he was close from dying (God of
There are quite a few differences between The Lightning Thief book and the movie but there are three that I found to be extremely different and obvious. First, the most notable one is with the pearls. In the book Percy is given three pearls by Nereid. He is instructed to use them when in great need or danger. However, in the movie the pearls are hidden. The visitors who find a pearl are able to escape from the underworld and return to the sea. The second, is the death of Medusa. Percy cuts off her head in the book and it is then shipped to the Olympians, but in the movie her head travels with them upon their quest to return the lightning bolt to Mount Olympus. The third, is the character Ares, the god of war and the son of Zeus. He
Overall, Riordan uses different mythological characters, to create a modern adaptation of the story of Perseus. Riordan does so in a way that a younger audience can understand and even relate to in this day and age. The main point Riordan is trying to get across, is this idea of heroism, and using children’s imaginations to make this happen. However, he doesn’t only use Percy to be portrayed as the hero, he also uses Grover, and also Annabeth, who both help Percy along his quest.
Percy was born August 4th, 1792 in a small village of Broadbridge Heath, there he learned to fish and hunt in the meadows with his good friend and Cousin Thomas Medwin. He was the oldest of seven children of which belonged to Thomas Shelley and Elizabeth Pilfold. At the age of just ten Percy left Broadbridge Heath to go to Syon House Academy then two years later he attended Eton College. He eventually started having issues with Eton College. He was being severely bullied mentally and physically by his classmates. After a while his escape from the pain was his imagination. After a year he had already published two stories and two books of poetry.
In this scene, two ancient greek chest plates can be seen in the background, and all three characters appear to be holding weapons. Because both the novel and the movie are set in modern times and involve ancient greek myths, they contain the historical narratives of a hero’s journey and a tale of redemption, which were both widely present in ancient greek mythology. In both the novel and in this film adaptation, Percy must undergo a quest to prove that he is not guilty of having stolen Zeus’ lightning bolt, and is joined on this quest by Grover and Annabeth, who are also present in this scene. During this journey, these characters are forced to travel to several varying locations, with this image being taken from an event that does not occur in the novel, and was used as a replacement for another incident. I feel that this event was most likely changed to further character development, while also being used to further the development of the story. In this film, the development of the characters has been altered, compared to the original development of these characters in the novel. In the book, Percy and Annabeth are both twelve years old, while in the film, both characters have had their ages increased to sixteen, which I feel was done to appeal to a
In the story Percy Jackson, the Lightning Thief, a boy named Percy Jackson has to face a conflict that decides if he and his father, Poseidon, survive Zeus' wrath. At the beginning, Percy finds that odd things are happening after he vaporizes his math teacher, Mrs. Dodd, at a museum right before summer. After this grueling experience, he went home to find his mom not at home and smelly Gabe, his step-father, sitting there playing poker. Minutes later, Sally, Percy's mother, walks in and declares that she and Percy would be taking a vacation that same day. Then, she and Percy drove to Long Island and settled down in their cabins to sleep. At that time it had started raining and at midnight Grover, Percy's friend, started banging on the door.
