The movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightning Thief, has been modernized from the story, “Danaüs, Perseus, and the Gorgon,” in many ways such as: the plot and all the enemies he faced, the character types such as Percy’s friends that helped him through his journey, and how Percy's life was modified from Perseus’s. Among these, the two boys faced great danger. Perseus and Percy faced many challenges along the way. They were tested, they met allies, and they faced enemies. Along this journey they realized that they needed to protect others, and fight for their own safety.First of all, Perseus wanted to protect his mother from a king who wanted to marry her. The king wanted to get rid of Perseus because then his mother would be vulnerable. …show more content…
In this case, the king sent Perseus away to slay the monster, Medusa. Medusa was a monster who nobody ever thought of killing, whenever she would look into your eyes, she would turn you into stone. After Perseus had done the impossible, he ran into a young girl who he later fell in love with who was hanging on a cliff, about to be devoured by a sea monster. The text states, ““Flee!” she said. “Or you too will be devoured by the sea monster!”” this was just one of many struggles that Perseus had faced. On the other hand, Percy battled time. Percy had to find three pearls. Each one would take him, Grover(his protector), and Annabeth Chase(Daughter of Athena) out from the underworld where his mother was kept a prisoner. While he was doing this, he ate lotus flower, which made time stop in the same day. Once he had been given advice from his father, he had awaken from his trance and realized he had been in this trance for four days. He had little time before he had to return the lightning(Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). Both Perseus and Percy share an unusual birth.
Both Percy and Perseus had a god as their father, Perseus’s father was Zeus and Percy’s father was Poseidon, but their mothers were mortal. This made them demigods. Demigods usually have special powers like super strength or being able to fly, however they are in human form. Also, they are raised humans on Earth. Percy was developed to have a different lifestyle then Perseus as being a normal, American teenager. Perseus, however, was in contact with gods, such as, “As he stood at a crossroad wondering which way to go, Athena and Hermes suddenly showed up.” (D'aulaires,117) A king wanted to marry Perseus’s mother but she refused because he was ruthless. The author states, “ He wanted her for his queen. In vain did Danaё turn him away.”(D'aulaires,116) Percy’s mother,Sally Jackson, married a guy, Gabe, who was horrible to both Percy and Sally. Gabe treated Sally like she was a maid and Percy hated that, and as soon as he returned the lightning, they did not need Gabe anymore. In conclusion, Sally left Gabe(Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). …show more content…
. The theme development was very easy to tell.
Both the story and the movie had the same theme; this was Good vs. Evil. One of the main characters in both Percy Jackson and Perseus was Medusa, she was one of the ‘evils’ that they had to face. When Medusa first appeared in Percy Jackson, Percy needed to get one of three pearls from her necklace. He then used his pen sword to cut off her head, just like Perseus did(Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). In the story, “Perseus swooped down, and with one deft stroke he cut off Medusa’s head,¨ (D'aulaires,118) Perseus had great help with navigating and slaying the monster. Zeus had sent Athena and Hermes to help Perseus. D’aulaires states, “Athena lent him her shield, polished as brightly as a mirror. Hermes lent him his sword, which was so sharp that it could cut through the hardest metal…” (D'aulaires,117) Percy had help from Athena’s daughter, Annabeth, and Hermes’s son, Luke. Annabeth came up with the strategies and was definitely both moral support and helped Percy fight the battles. Luke gave Percy shoes that could fly. This came in handy when he was fighting the gigantic, Hydra. However, Luke was actually setting them up, Luke wanted to take power in both the mortal and god world. This made it easy to tell the good and the bad in the world. Percy and Perseus were full of light and good and they had to fight evil for the protection of their mother and the rest of the world(in the case of Percy
Jackson). The movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians The Lightning Thief, has been changed from the story,“Danaüs, Perseus, and the Gorgon,” to satisfy the new generation of readers. By updating the story, the director of Percy Jackson was able to modify the plot line, the characters he met and who he truly was, and finally, how they were born and raised.
In the poem Perseus the character is Medusa's victims. That is the only one that is different from the other story. The setting isn’t as different as the other story but it is the only setting it is Medusa's cave. The events are that Perseus sees Medusa's victims then Perseus wanted to kill or destroy Medusa. Finally, the conflict of the story is that Perseus has a thirst to kill, its a problem because he wants to kill innocent people.
Percy Jackson is just another typical twelve year old kid, although he may seem like it at first being a troubled kid, and kicked out of several schools. But that’s until Percy’s life takes an extraordinary turn. It all starts when Percy discovers that he has ADHD and Dyslexia, meaning his bloodline is half descending from a Greek god. This secret was kept from him his entire life but was released through a series of events on a field trip. Mr. Brunner, Percy’s Latin teacher, brings him to Camp Half-Blood, where all the mythical beings and other half-bloods reside. During his stay at Camp Half-Blood, Percy finds out about the identity of his true father, who happened to be Poseidon, one of the big three, as some would say. To be the son of Poseidon
"I didn't steal it! And I have no connection to Poseidon." was said by Percy Jackson, the protagonist in The Lightning thief. Percy Jacson personality was like his mood swings. For this reason is because In the book He can be calm talking to Grover one minute and get angry the next tailing to Nancy Bobofit. Plus, Percy gets mad at Nancy Bobofit for bullying Grover and him. He always lets his curiosity get the best of him even when he hears people talk to him.
My original thought when comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie and Classical mythology was that there would be many more references to the myth of Perceus than any other myth throughout the movie in its entirety. That’s where I was wrong. After watching the movie again and researching the different hero myths my opinion has changed. My new thoughts are that the movie is not influenced by the myth of Perceus any more than other hero myths. The movie ties together many different heroes’ stories and mixes them together to make a wonderful story about a young boy. The movie was based on a book series written by Rick Riordan.
The Lightning Thief is about Percy Jackson, a 12 year old boy who has troubles at home (violent step father) and troubles at school (dealing with ADHD). During what seems like another normal day, he's attacked by his math teacher, only to learn that she is a monster called a harpy. Things only get crazier when he is saved by his best friend Grover, who reveal he himself is not human either, but is in fact a satyr, a creature from Greek myths. Percy learns of a world he never knew existed. He is in fact the son of the Greek god Poseidon, and he is what is called a demi god, half god and half human. Grover takes Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven for demi gods that are hunted by monsters. There he meets other half bloods, like the daughter
His road of trials primarily consists of his run-ins with Medusa at Aunty Em’s Gnome Emporium, Echidna at the St. Louis Gateway Arch, and Procrustes the stretcher in Los Angeles. All of these situations were challenging ordeals, which Percy had to walk into without minimal knowledge of, even with Annabeth’s help. Furthermore, after jumping into the river at the Gateway Arch, Percy had his meeting with the goddess. In this case, the goddess was a sea nymph who reminded Percy that Poseidon was on his side and provided help for later ordeals. In the Underworld, Percy could have saved his mother and left one of his friends, or even himself, behind, yet he chose to finish his quest and find Zeus’s lightning bolt instead. This was his temptation from the true path, proving that he is worthy of being a hero. While trying to solve this case, he reached the apotheosis of this arc; he defeated Ares in battle. In defeating a god in battle, Percy proved himself to be godlike, more so than merely being the son of Poseidon. After learning that Ares had the bolt the whole time, Percy returns it to Zeus, meeting with Poseidon and finishing the book on good terms with his father. The ultimate boon for Percy in this book was understanding that his mother and his friends were capable. Overall, Percy’s arc in The Lightning Thief conforms to the initiation of the hero’s
Percy Jackson is a true hero. Imagine if you had the chance to save your mother, but put your own life at risk. When Percy was given this chance, he never even thought about his own life. When he saved the world, he didn't care if he put his own life in immense trouble. When he met his half brother, he stood up for him, not caring if no one liked him after. It is clear that there is no way that Percy Jackson can be thought of anything but a hero, which is what he truly
...his adventures. Both of them give Perseus something to help him in his adventure; from Athena the shield and from Hermes, the sandals and sickle. The god Dionysus ends up being the one to kill Perseus.
In The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, The main chapter, Percy Jackson, discovers he is a demi god and the son of poseidon. Throughout his life he has problems getting along with some people because he is different. When he is at Yancy Academy, he has conflicts with a girl named Nancy Bobofit. Later, when he goes to camp Half Blood, his main problem at camp is a girl named Clarisse. Although both girls are bullies, they are not alike and do different things to annoy Percy.
First off, Perseus is a great hero throughout greek mythology. He slayed the mighty Medusa. But some may say since Perseus only killed Medusa, while heroes such
The fact that Percy Jackson has friends is incredible. It is an unshakable fact that any friend of his within a ten-mile radius will be in a life or death situation with him by dinner, and they are not always as lucky as he is. However, that is getting ahead of ourselves. Over the course of the five-part contemporary young adult series, Percy Jackson & The Olympians, the titular character, Percy Jackson, must embrace his Greek God parentage and save Olympus with the help of his fellow demigods. The aim of this paper is to discuss his Hero’s Journey throughout the series, provide an in-depth character analysis, and draw parallels between Percy and the three classic Greek heroes of mythology: Perseus, Theseus, and Hercules.
The legend of Perseus is told in many different ways, in two particular ways they are similar but yet quite different. The movie Clash of the Titans is primarily a story of Perseus and his dangerous journey to save the princess Andromeda, while the Edith Hamilton’s Mythology is a story of Perseus, his relationship with his mother and journeys to her.
Percy Jackson retails the story of Perseus in a more modern way for more people to understand.Even though that Percy Jackson's story is in a more modern way the both storys still have the same main story plots. For example Percy had shoes that made him fly to go collect these tiny beads to get him to the other side of Olympus(these shoes had little wings on them), and Perseus had the same flying shoes and not to forget the magical weapons they had like the shield and sword that had a lighting bolt in it that Percy had no idea it was in there. Also the main point of it was Perseus and Percy went on a quest and in both of the quests they used meduesa's head as almost a weapon to turn anything into a stone when in trouble. This proves that even though they had differences it still proves that they had changed it to be
Perseus was a hero who was very skilled and dangerous. His most notable feat was to kill Medusa. He grew up on the island of Seriphos. This island was ruled by King Polydectes. The king wanted Perseus's mother, but Perseus wouldn’t allow it. Polydectes was trying to figure out how to get rid of Perseus. When he overheard Perseus boasting that he could kill Medusa (“Perseus”). The King seized his opportunity and issued a challenge to Perseus. The
