According to the Kaiser Family Foundation study, the average amount of time spent using entertainment media, in 2004, was about 6.5 hours per day. In 2009, this had increased to nearly 7.5 hours daily. (Higher Screen Time, Lower Grades) This number can only continue to increase with each new form of technology that is made. While technology may be an advantage to some people, it is getting in the way of more important things. Schools should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because technology is distracting, people spend too much time on screens which can become unhealthy, and it affects school performance. Between the four articles, studies were conducted to prove that technology is distracting. Nicholas Carr says “If we’re distracted, we understand less, remember less, and learn less.” If people are always distracted by their phones, computers, and other devices, they will never be able to learn or think deeply. While technology may help us with something like work or getting directions, it also comes with “deadly consequences” (Richtel). Too much technology can be tempting and “cause wrecks” (Richtel). People get too attached to their devices that they “forget things like dinner plans, and [have] trouble focusing on family” (Richtel). This could eventually become unhealthy if someone is on their electronics all the time and do not socialize with anyone.
