Technology can disrupt people’s train of thought. To begin with, many people around the world use technology. Electronics can help students and also affect them in many ways, but whether or not shutting down all electronics can help. Schools should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because of many reasons.
First of all, using electronics causes people to get distracted. According to Nicholas Carr, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” from The New York Times Upfront, “When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.”This sentence stated by Nicholas Carr contributes to my claim of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” For instance, when students are at home using their electronics they get distracted from doing their homework. This is a way technology is affecting many students. This article by Nicholas Carr supports my argument of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because many students do get distracted while using electronics causing them not to do their work.

According to Sheri Hosale from the website, Roogirl.com, in the article, 25 Negative Effects of Technology, she says “The more we isolate ourselves with technology the fewer bonds we will form.” This statement from Sheri Hosale’s article demonstrates my claim that schools should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” This can be seen when children spend too much time in the internet, that they never make any bonds with other people. He states, “Computers make our worst educational nightmare come true” (279). According to him, improper or overuse of computers hinders learning ability. He reports that over the past few years, computers have been assumed to be a necessity in America’s classrooms and introduced to children from elementary levels. However, technology can be addictive, and students may overuse it, leading to a drop in educational standards.

Michelle also became aware that over forty percent of people were suffering from anxiety when they were separated from the phones. This clearly shows that we are connected to the technology that we use, but we are also suffering from the use of technology. We spend more than half of our entire day using some sort of technology, whether that is a computer, phone, television, or radio. Technology is becoming a prevalent part of our lives, and we cannot live without it. Technology has become our family, and part of us.
In the current society, there are new technologies every day. As these different technologies increase, the number of users are also increasing. These users are dedicating their time to the Internet. It could be for work, school, or social interactions. School districts are now afraid that students will spend more time on the Internet. Instead, they should be spending their time studying. As a result of this epidemic, schools made an approach to the idea of “Shut Down Your Screen” week. This idea requires the staff and students to have no contact with any type of technology for a whole week. Teachers are not allowed to teach with any SmartBoards, projectors, laptops, or computers. Students are only allowed to learn with textbooks and write on paper. Bayless High School should take part in “Shut Down Your Screen” week because the idea will help students learn better. Also, the usage of social interactions will decrease.
This makes kids forget how to socialize with one another and not know how to carry on a conversation. Along with socialization becoming obsolete, technology causes addiction, and the replacement of jobs throughout America. The reasons why technology is impacting society in a negative way is how people are forgetting how to socialize and becoming antisocial, automatics are taking the place of jobs for humans, and the internet is making millions addicted along with more mental health problems.
Rosen stated that “how do we teach focus in a world that is constantly drawing our attention elsewhere? One strategy that we are using in classrooms around the world is called “technology break.” He explained that this strategy work by teachers leading students check their social media, messages, emails, or text only for a minute after that they have to turn their phones silent and facing down ,and work for fifteen minutes after the 15 minutes had pass they repeat the process again. I guess this strategy is all about controlling anxiety which is what really cause the used of technology. I really don’t believe we can teach people to focus in more important things than elsewhere because this is all about using and adjusting to technology the right way. Ninety percent of those teachers believed that technology was causing their students to become more easily distracted with shorter attention spans. An article on Huffington Post mentioned a study that showed that students could not focus on their homework for more than two minutes before having to look at some kind of electronical device like their phone or television. The Kaiser Family Foundation found that about half of students from the ages of eight to eighteen do their homework while using some kind of electronical device. Technology has affected our focus so much that we can't even focus on the little things for too long. Studies have even shown that people who use the internet at work change tabs or check their email about thirty-seven times an hour! All this multitasking can cause us to become more distracted. Sometimes, we can even become distracted towards the people around us.
Imagine an entire week of class without any cell phones, computers, or any other devices that can cause as a distraction to students, or cause you to lose their attention. Wouldn’t that week just be great? Well this is now a realistic thought, now that “Shut Down Your Screen Week” has been proposed. After reading Social Media as Community, Is Google Making Us Stupid, and Attached to Technology and Paying a Price the decision is clear; we should participate in “Shut Down Your Screen Week”. Although devices, such cellular phones and computers, are time savers and make us more efficient at finding relevant information, a week without them is well in need. This is mainly because the internet and electronic devices can be addictive, cause attention problems, and stop students from learning. We need to come to a halt with our consistent use of digital technology in order to help our students.
Most people acknowledge that the advancement of technology has negatively impacted our social interactions because it detaches us from what is happening around us, obstructs communication, and spreads the concept of hurting teens learning ability must be able to utilize technology while not allowing it to effect social interactions, particularly for those who are easily influenced during our young years. Our world must learn to embrace technology without allowing it to negatively impact the creation of functional adults in society.

The development of technology in this country has been significant to the daily lives of Americans today. In the twenty-first century, one of the greatest accomplishments of technology is the use of laptops. People, such as students, are facing the fact that laptops have made their lives easier. Some colleges and universities have allowed that each student bring their personal laptops with internet connectivity to class while others believe they easily weaken the learning abilities of students instead of promoting and increasing learning in the classroom. Although personal laptops in the classroom have numerous advantages, there have also been frequent complaints from professors because laptops hinder with learning, and as a result should be banned from bringing them into the classroom since laptops can easily distract students, not every student can afford purchasing a laptop, and would prevent students from cheating or plagiarizing.
Almost every child between the ages of eight and twelve are getting cell phones. The average home in America has as many televisions as they do people. Only 20% of American homes do not have a computer. Technology is quickly becoming a new way of life. The amount of time people are on their devices is growing rapidly. According to The Huffington Post, people are on their devices for on average about eleven hours and fifty-two minutes a day. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not realized yet how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. As a result of technology increasing, children are experiencing health problems, school issues, and social problems.
Imagine a sunny, blue-sky day. A beautiful day to be outside playing with friends. You look over and notice that you son/daughter is on the computer. You tell them to go outside and enjoy the day; they say they can not, because they do not have any friends. If they live in Nebraska though they could, because the person they are talking to lives there. Many children now a day are not getting the proper exercise they need; because, they are spending day and night on the Internet chatting. In addition, due to them spending so much time online, their schoolwork has drop significantly. There have been so many times that I heard my friends say “Only if I had more time.” Well if they have spent less time chatting and more time studying things would be different.
There has been a long lasting debate in the resent years on whether or not technology has a positive or negative impact on today’s kids. Electronics are a huge part of our society. “Out of the world’s estimated 7 billion people, 6 billion have access to mobile phones” (Wang). Over thousands of these cell phones are owned by students K-12. A major debate topic is should cell phones be allowed in schools? “Twenty-four percent of schools have banned mobile devices altogether and sixty-two percent allow them on school grounds, but not in the classroom” (Raths). Cell phones should not be allowed in school because children focus more on the phone than schoolwork, it will create more drama, and it promotes cheating.

Balancing technology throughout the educational process and keeping with current trends and uses of technology will affect everyone. Technology has transformed our youth’s daily and social lives.
