The Benefits of Technology Technology is going to lead to the demise of the human race. Or as Nicholas Carr states in his article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, he presents his viewpoint on the topic of technology and how it is being used daily. In discussions of the use of technology, one controversial issue has been how technology impacts our thinking. Carr asserts that technology negatively impacts people, causing them to not think deeply and to have a shorter attention span. However, the use of technology is not only making us smarter, but is allowing people to advance and adapt into the revolving world around us. With technology becoming more apparent in day-to-day use, people are beginning to have all information available at their disposal. There is no longer a need to read in-depth articles on a specific topic when the Internet has a brief synopsis of the subject. Therefore, without spending time reading and searching through a library …show more content…
Compared to twenty years ago, the medical components of society vary vastly. While working at my internship at the UVa Hospital in the Biomedical Engineering Research Lab, they portray the advancements in technology over the previous years, showing the growth and change from without technology to with technology. The lab I am overseeing is also working on ways to produce regenerative muscle tissue for injuries for muscle loss. Knowing how new this research is, only the use of the Internet, technology, and other resources is used to make this and other life-saving processes possible. Carr discusses in his article about how the typewriter was implemented into Friedrich Nietzsche lifestyle, allowing him to be able to write once again without enduring painful headaches (Carr 318-319) proving how technology is not only beneficial but essential to people wanting to carry out common activities who are unable to do so without
Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and Sherry Turkle’s “How Computers Change the Way We Think” both discuss the influence of technology to their own understanding and perspective. The first work by Nicholas Carr is about the impact technology has on his mind. He is skeptical about the effect it could cause in the long term of it. He gives credible facts and studies done to prove his point. While Sherry Turkle’s work gives a broad idea of the impact of technology has caused through the years. She talks about the advances in technology and how it is changing how people communicate, learn and think. In both works “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and “How Computers Change the Way We Think” the authors present
In Nicholas Carr 's article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” he discusses the effect that technology has on our brains as the world becomes more advanced. He gives examples of how technology has helped us and hurts us. Nicholas Carr tells about his own experiences with technology and others as well. In this paper, I will talk about the first part of Carr’s article, I will then agree with Nicholas Carr, give examples from his article, talk on his structure, sources, counterarguments or solutions, and end with why I agree with what he has said.
Humans have been creating tools that allow us to be do things that would be otherwise impossible since the beginning of our existence. The ability to use and develop new tools is what sets us apart from all other animals. Yet it seems that ever since these tools started being created there were also people that feared these new tools and claimed that they are bad for the human race. The present fear of new technology is illustrated in the essay “Is Google Making us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr. In this essay Carr argues that the internet and other new technologies are changing the way we think in a negative way. Carr claims that new technology is making our generation stupid. In opposition the article “Smarter Than You Think” by Clive Thompson
It is a well-known fact that the Internet has become a central part of society, and it has completely changed every aspect of life for the human race, whether it is for better or worse. Nicholas Carr explains his thoughts on how the Internet has changed how people think in his article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” He believes that the human race is losing its ability to think deeply and is creating a distraction culture, and that companies like Google are working to increase this way of thinking. However, the issue of how the human brain is changing with the Internet is very complex, and the answer to this question goes beyond a simple yes or no.
Humans are becoming more technologically-efficient every day. New inventions and innovations are constantly being made. The Internet is becoming more “reliable” every day. However, how much do we really get from the constant advancement of Internet use and smarter technology? Should we look at their contributions to the world as a benefactor or a curse? The common effect of “artificial intelligence” in the technology we use every day is examined by two brilliant authors, Nicholas Carr and Jamias Cascio. In Carr’s article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, he explains the effects of the Internet and technology in our society and claims that the overuse of technology is dangerous and can affect how our mind operates. Jamias Cascio, on the other hand, uses his article “Get Smarter” to show the positive effects of technology in our constantly adaptive society claims that technology may just be making our society smarter and more efficient. While Carr and Cascio both use the claim of cause in their articles to provide valid points on how technology affects our society, Carr’s article proves to be more effective because it focuses on skeptical-based evidence and uses a variety of appeals and proofs.
Technology surrounds us every day in the modern world. It has become almost a necessity to most who use it, while others would beg to differ. There is debate surrounding both articles written by Nicholas Carr, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and Jamais Cascio, “Get Smart” both arguments provide opinion and evidence about the use of technology. Carr discusses how the use of the computers affects our thought process. Carr begins by talking about his own experience as a writer and how he felt like “something had been tinkering with his brain, remapping his neural circuitry and reprogramming his memory”. (Carr, 1). On the contrary Cascio’s article "Get Smart," Cascio urges
With the rising of technology in the modern age, lots of new inventions have been introduced and the appearance of those inventions has helped our life significantly. But the growth of technology has also raised a vast amount of concerns, and most of those concerns are due to the negative effects of technology to our minds – the users who benefit from it. Nicholas Carr in “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” has strengthened those concerns by coming up with the idea that the advance in technology is influencing our thoughts and behaviors to be functioning differently than the way they used to be.
As time goes by, many people around the world are relying on technology to fulfill their daily lives. Many people use technology for work, school, and communication. Technology keeps getting more advanced year after year. Some technological advances are Apple coming up with the new iPhone or the government creating a new droid that could save many lives in the United States military. Technology has helped the entire world stay connected and has changed the lives of people dramatically. Nicholas Carr has created several articles mentioning how technology is changing our minds. The persuasiveness of Nicholas Carr in “Is Good Making us Stupid?’’, can be determined by understanding his pathos, his ethos, and his logos.
In Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid” discusses the fact that society is changing, the way we get information is changing. Anything we desire to know is right at our fingertips with a few short keystrokes puts our entire vast knowledge base in front of our very eyes. These changes in how we collect data and disperse it causes a change in our neurological systems and how we think. Google is not making us stupid but it is changing how we think.
In his original essay, titled “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr explains how our brains have changed with the technology that we are using at the time. He ends his essay stating, “As we come to rely on computers to mediate out understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence” (328). Carr is describing here that our minds are changing to meet the technology we are using. As we move towards artificial intelligence, we risk sinking into nothing more than robots. This statement represents the theme of his essay because it is indicative of the way humans’ minds change with the technology they are using. The author cites many examples of the earliest forms of technology used today to support his argument, but does not accurately describe what technology is. His essay brings up technology such the printing press and how it changed peoples’ minds by giving them access to information, and how Friedrich Nietzsche’s use of the typewriter made his writing change from persuasive speaking to basic communication. Carrs’ writing is very clear, but he does not clearly define technology. Providing an explanation will make it easier to see how it has affected the human mind throughout history. In short, technology is the invented and innovated tools that aid in the completion of everyday tasks in measurement and recording, communication and labor.
In this era dominated by technology, where information is readily available at a click, Nicholas Carr’s article attempts to discuss the effect of humanity’s reliance on the internet. While “is Google making us stupid?” initially disguises itself as an article on the effects of internet usage on the mind, Carr’s lack of statistical data severely undermines his claims. His reliance on personal experiences and usage of quotations from other authors without very much analysis renders the article inadequate. Initially, Carr begins his article by quoting lines from the movie “A Space Odyssey”: “‘Dave, stop. Stop, will you?
Humans are living in the digital decade, generating the variety of media technologies to provide human the convenient information access. Nicolas Carr, an author of many books concerning technology and culture, expressed his skepticism about how the Internet impacts to human beings in the article: “Is Google making us stupid?”. Carr claims that the Internet has been changing the way human beings process information lowering the capacity for concentration and contemplation (Carr). Contrary to Carr’s argument, I have the positive perspective that the internet helps us smarter and people should concern about how they use the Internet instead of blaming this versatile tool
The article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid, “as essay suggests, Carr constantly states factors of how and why the internet is creating problems for today’s society. His main reference is to Google, and also discusses other technological advancements throughout history. In using these devices he show how great of an impact they actually have on society. Carr emphasized how using Google we tend to become lazy and unfocused. He makes references to Google and how it along with other technological advancements throughout history has changed society as a whole. It’s almost as if we don’t think for ourselves. Our minds tend to be like a wandering ground one minute we
Technological innovation is now one of the most basic motivations in developing the human society. However, some technological growth is worrisome, especially digital technologies, because a lot of intellectuals claim that technology is changing the human mind and these changes are probably not all positive. Nicholas Carr, one of the intellectuals I’m referring to, uses his personal experiences to tell the worrisome about the convenience we gain from the developing technologies is changing our minds, and probably destroying our abilities of independent thinking. Obviously, Carr ignores the positive impacts of technology which are more effective than the negative impacts he focuses on. The technology development is still one of the most important
Nicholas Carr argues in his controversial article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” that technology, specifically; the Internet and the devices we use to access the Internet (smartphones, computers, and tablets) are having detrimental effects on mental cognition. I do not think these effects are limited to just the way we are reading. It is beyond...
