Should doctors be working more than a 24 hour shift? Before, 1st year residents were only allowed to work 16 hour shifts a week. But come July 1st, all first year residents will be allowed to work as long as they want. Doctors should not work more than 24 hours a week, because they are sleep deprived, have defective motor skills, and poor memory.
Doctors should not be working more than 24 hour shifts. Jodie Marks, a Nurse at a hospital in Houston said, “After working 24 hours most of us are usually exhausted”(Marks Interview). 5% of doctors prefer working 40 hours a week rather than, the regular 16 hours that most doctors are required to work. Jodie, as a nurse, said “If some doctors are too tired, they will make mistakes that can’t be fixed”(Marks Interview). When on the job, most doctors and nurses(34.5%), can’t help falling asleep. After working so long and hard, they must force themselves to keep their eyes open. They must force themselves to get up and keep moving. But when a doctor is so tired, mistakes are made. These mistake can’t be fixed. They can also terribly damage the patient or even kill them.
Most people tend to believe that, doctors and nurses don’t need the sleep that they deserve. While I agree with the view that patients should have the doctors full attention, I disagree with the view that doctors should be working more than 24 hours. As recent research has shown, that the more hours doctors work, the more sleep deprived they become. “We know sleep-deprived people can have impaired motor skills and their memory can deteriorate, said Dr. Michael A. Carome, director of health research at Public Citizen, an advocacy group.” This shows that doctors need sleep just as much as as we do. If they don’t get the full sleep that they deserve, thing could end up going terribly wrong.
