Over the years, many issues have been debated, and whether kids should play competitive sports is among the most highly argued. The two main sides (yes and no) have argued, written speeches, and found facts or research to support their claim. However, kids should be able to play competitive sports. This is because: firstly, it has many mental benefits; secondly, it has many physical benefits; and lastly, it has social benefits as well. One very important reason that kids should be able to play competitive sports is that it has many mental benefits. For example, as stated in “The Benefits of Competitive Athletic Sports Participation in Today’s Sports Climate” is that “their level of perseverance and determination will be tested. For instance, this is stated in “Sports Promote Healthy Weight For Youth:” “They calculated that if all adolescents played on at least two sports teams per year… obesity rates would plunge 26 percent and the prevalence of overweight adolescents would fall by 11 percent” (O’Connor, 2012). This proves my claim because this fact says that if more people played sports, then our obesity and overweight problem would lower. As a result of this, many people will improve in physical health, because of how humans were supposed to be active and when people don’t act like they were supposed to, then they will have most likely get some health problem. As an example, imagine if you have a friend, but he develops a health problem that makes it so that he or she can’t hang out with you or in worst case scenario: dies. In addition, in “What are the Benefits of Competitive Sports For Youth” it states “many children who are active in sports are motivated to eat healthier foods, such as fruits and vegetables” (Davis, 2014). This proves my claim because when a kid eats more fruits and vegetables to perform in a sport, then the kid will become healthier and improving their physical health. Also, this proves that sports will motivate people to do things as stated in the previous paragraph. Lastly, “In a nation with an obesity epidemic and a rate of diabetes that continues to grow, physical activity is becoming more and more important ” (2014), from “Get off that Couch and Play.” This proves the claim because sports will increase your activity level which will lower your chances of diabetes and obesity, and as a result, one will improve their own physical fitness. And based on this statement, exercise will also lower your risk of diabetes mellitus-a condition that affects your ability to use energy in food.
