There were variety of types of writing that we used throughout this year. For example, we wrote many short answer responses, where we write about a paragraph long response in ACE (Answer, Cite evidence, Explanation) format. Also, we wrote our versions of some scenes from the drama play book called “Our Town”. My favorite writing we did this year was the short answer response. This is because didn’t take too much time to write, and it was overall the easiest to do. I’m not too good at writing poems, and for some reason, I don’t really like writing them. One of the biggest weaknesses I have is not being able to transition from paragraphs effectively. In the Lord of the Flies and Asher Lev essays, I did not create a good flow through the essay, making it sort of choppy. I can improve this by increasing my knowledge of transition words and not expanding ideas too much. Also I have to work on slowing down my pace with writing and watch out for grammar mistakes. A way I could improve this is learning the placement of quotations in sentences, that they should be after a period in some cases. Another idea that I have to improve on is choosing the best evidence for my claim. In the Lord of the Flies essay, I had not chose the best evidences and it did not effectively show examples of the claim. Through December 5th through the 7th, I performed in Thornton Wilder’s play of Our Town. The only sets or props that the actors or actresses used where folding chairs for us to sit in, umbrellas to hide Emily (Julie Dumbler), and flats on both sides of the stage to hide the people behind them. The reason for the lack of set is so the audience can use there imagination of what the town of Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire looks like. All the rest of the props that the actors had to use were pan mimed and acted out to the fullest to make it look real. The only other experience with no set was with Miss Henery in Neodesha and it was a disaster so I didn’t know how well this was going to work out. But with the help of our director Peter Ellenstein and the rest of the cast, the pan miming was very successful. Our performance space was a modified thrust stage. The shape of the stage served us well for this play, but the back stage was horrible. All of the chairs that we had to use were folding chairs that made a lot of noise even if you hardly touched one. One neat thing about the play is that all of the sound affects were made by our backstage manager (Lisa Mitchell) or other members of the cast. In exception for the clock chiming at the end of the play. People who have seen the play tell me that it is a very heart moving play. I did not get that feeling because I was always backstage or onstage. Ether way I didn’t get to watch the play so I couldn’t see what was so moving about it. The only humor I got was from lines and the funniest person I heard was Professor Willard (Gary Mitchell). The audience is led through the entire play by the Stage Manager (Cory Venable). He literally talks to the audience between every scene explaining what is going on in the story. I thought Mr. Wilder did a good job in having a Stage Manager do this. The Stage Manager tells and shows us a story a young girl growing up and facing death, even after death. He show us how Emily Webb (Julie Dumbler) first gets to know her future husband George Gibbs (Eric Cole).

Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. Wilder's passionate plea in the play is to appreciate every moment of every day, for life is a fleeting thing. With troubles rapidly expanding in Europe and war becoming a looming reality, people were inundated with the negative aspects of life. To see Our Town was to escape from the negative and rejoice in the ordinary; it reaffirmed faith in the unchanging moral values of small town living. It was obviously the balm that audiences needed in the midst of a pessimistic and changing world. Through his play, Wilder tries to teach the audience to seize the moment and enjoy living. There are no guarantees about a certain life span, as evidenced by the premature deaths of Emily Webb and her brother, Wally; tomorrow may be too late. By calling the drama Our Town and portraying ordinary people and events, the people in the audience and the readers of the play can identify with the theme and apply it to their own lives. Much like art, and literature a play has a message to communicate to the audience. In the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder the overall message that is being sent is that people often take life for granted and often don’t appreciate the smaller details so we should learn to appreciate them. He implies one thing that is taken for granted is the connections we have with others. Wilder even uses great detail to have the reader understand that. He also uses the theme of cycles that are easily understood and often relatable, the first being daily life, the second being love and marriage, and death to create a connection for the audience. He also uses tool such as a Stage Manager to clearly present those ideas while at the same time allowing a connection between the audience and the play. The stage manager is also a character without bounds and so Wilder takes advantage of that by allowing the use of flashbacks to clarify ideas. With these tools Wilder has the ability to allow the audience to understand a clear message and appreciate life.
Thornton Wilder’s play, Our Town, is appreciated by its audience as a result of its recognition and popularity. Along with the play’s acknowledgment and praise some people have even recognized it as the greatest American tragedy. However, Stephens’ article, “Our Town -Great American Tragedy?”, has challenged this claim. Also, in this article, Stephens makes arguable claims on the effectiveness and the tragic nature of Wilder’s play. Furthermore, Stephens’ argues that there is a weak emotional connection between the play and the audience and minimal depth in the characters. Still, the depth of the characters and cathartic moment in Our Town capture the tragic nature of the play.
My experience with writing in English class has mainly been a good one. Since I began writing essays in Elementary school I have been a decent writer. I am always working on my writing skills to become a better writer; there will always be room for improvement. Every English class I have taken has taught me new techniques, which helped to strengthen my previous writing abilities, as well as hone newly learned skills. Some of the aspects of my writing experience that I am going to write about are my favorite kind of writing assignments, my least favorite kind of writing assignments, my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and my expectations for Freshman English.
In this paper, I am to write about my strengths and weaknesses in writing. This is not an easy task for me because I have never considered myself a writer. Reading other peoples thoughts are activities that are more my speed. I simply have trouble putting my thoughts into writing. Since, I do not feel that I have many strengths, let's move on to my weaknesses.
My strengths as a writer are that my papers are very well developed, they have always been graded and ranged from a high B to an A. I always meet the requirement, but I don't add as much detail as I should. I have a good style and organization. I always make sure to keep my papers in order. All of my papers have spelling errors but is not bad enough for the reader to get confused while reading. Readers can easily follow my papers with no struggles. I use a variety of simple and complex sentences to structure my papers. I do get quite a few comma splices, but never to many run-on sentences or fragments in my paper. My papers do have a good word choice that include imagery and figurative language. I don't use super strong verbs in my papers and I also have grammatical errors in my papers as well.
I have come about what my strengths and weaknesses are in my writings. What I tend to do wrong in my papers is trying to get the topic to stay on the topic throughout the paper. I tend to jump around topic to topic and my sentences just start to run on and repeat the same things. My strengths in writing is making sure that I make sure that I always back up my points and make sure that my paper fits the topic. “Good start— the cookie description has nice sensory details to draw your reader in.” (Prof. Church) When re-reading my papers, I don’t seem to find mistakes that my revisers find. I believe that I just am use to the way I write and the in corrections don’t jump out for me. “Listen to this sentence aloud, and then re-word it more clearly.” (Prof. Church)
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
One skill that I wish I had time to improve on is citing sources in MLA style. Through the course, I refused to seek help from my professor until week seven, one thing I regret doing. that could have allayed the fear and doubt I had about this course. Any questions I had could be cleared up as the course progressed. My essays through the subsequent weeks have demonstrated my strength and weaknesses. I do not have many strengths when it comes writing, but still I consider my greatest strength in writing to be being able to clearly understand the prompt and answer it correctly, especially with the analysis essays. I think this is just because I spend most of the scarce time on hand just to think about the prompt, for example, when I was preparing for my rhetorical analysis essay on globalization I thoroughly read both article on globalization by both Kwame Anthony Appiah and franklin Foer .An obvious struggle I have as a writer is organization and transitions. I tend to jump from one topic to another and sometimes cover. I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs to make my reader understand the logic of my paper. I have not had enough writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. I do sometimes admit that it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I become a proficient
