She's Out of My League

I have to agree with the consensus on this topic

She's Out of My League is such a disappointment. The film is a romantic comedy in the vein of the trend of R rated adult comedies. I really wanted to love this movie. I mean whats not to adore? First we have the dorky main character of of Kirk played by Jay Baruchel. Kirk is the type of guy who meant well in life but just really never had the cards in his favor. He works for the TSA with a crap supervisor, has a piece of junk car and dysfunctional family. Kirk's family really becomes the defining part of his life in the movie. The really sad part of it all is his ex-girlfriend from two years ago has been basically adopted by his family creating the most awkward opening to a movie I have seen in a long time.

The next major component of the movie is Kirk and his friends at the airport. There's the best friend with awful advice who is the main source of advice to Kirk who actually calls himself "Stainer" played by T.J. Miller. You probably will recognize him as Hud from Cloverfield. Next there is the pretty boy of the group Jack played by Mike Vogel also from Cloverfield. Lastly there is the only married one of the group with any sane advice albeit coming sprinkled between hilarious yet creepy disney references played by Nate Torrence.

The last aspect to the movie is of course Kirk's relationship with Molly played by Alice Eve. Kirk meets Alice by chance at the airport and though a series of event's bringing them closer and closer eventually fall for each other. Alice in the movie is seen as a stone cold ten who is perfect with her knowledge of sports, politeness and exceptional interactions with Kirk's family.

Enough with the Synopsis, lets see what works and flounders.

...

... middle of paper ...

... her ugly side with telling Kirk about how she really feels inside. She never really recovers after this to come out as a positive character.

Final Thoughts...

She's Out of My League was ultimately a movie of hit and misses. What was even more depressing was this film had such a great premise. Who in their life hasn't seen the couple where you wonder if the man is paying the girl for her company. Finally we have a film to attack this premise but it never really capitalizes on the idea and flounders on character development. Aspects I found realistic and humorous such as Alice's ex were underdeveloped. The movie does have it's funny scenes sprinkled with some genuinely heartwarming parts but never is able to get on a roll with good feeling. Go see this movie but there's no rush. A good flick to see with nothing better to do.

3 out of 5 on the hotness scale.
