The article is written by Bell Hooks as a critique of the article by Sheryl Sandberg. The author analyses the feminist theory as propounded by Sandberg. She acknowledges the fact that Sandberg’s view on Feminism is clouded by her race and privileged social status. It is thus apparent that Sandberg’s views are subjective to her situation and status in life. The largest failure of the piece is the fact that the writer fails to discuss how multiple intersectionality as defined by Kimberle Crenshaw affect the gender power matrix.
The aim of Bell Hook’s article is to show the bias that is inherent in Madam Sandberg’s piece. For instance, she points out the fact that Sheryl is not only a wealthy white woman but that she is a billionaire and COO at Facebook. That seems a rather naïve notion as it would be near impossible to dismantle a system that has been around for centuries. Probably, the author should be advocating for the creation of a parallel system of power that has women at the center. For instance, women can start dominating the areas that are traditionally their fortes. The hospitality industry should have more female presence. Once, they have taken over one sphere of influence then influence can grow like a weed.
Lack of perseverance is not the major hurdle that hinders upward mobility of women in society. There is a reason why the glass ceiling is a limit, no matter how hard some women may try to move upwards in society it seems that invisible barriers stop them. For instance, many well-educated ladies have run for the highest office. At times, some of them faced opponents that are less educated and with less impressive resumes.
