The community health program I choose, is run by a large national nonprofit organization called Share Our Strength’s, Cooking Matters (No kid Hungry). This organization focuses in families at risk of hunger and teaches them how to cook and make healthy meals on a budget. The main goal of the campaign is to end childhood hunger in America. The campaign has a strong system of partnerships around the country, such as the Capital Area Food Bank and the Walmart Foundation, which is the national sponsor. This nonprofit organization provides funding to many facilities and one of them is the Mary’s Center clinic at 3912 Georgia Avenue, NW Washington DC, 20011. Haynes Public Charter School. They will meet for two hours every Thursday for six weeks. The program provides simple nutritious recipes that kids can prepare themselves.
The program goal is to teach children about healthy eating and increase their confidence in talking with their parents about healthy cooking and eating. The outcome is to involve parents and children to eat healthy on a budget, and increase their knowledge in making snacks with fruits and vegetables, and making healthy choices at the groceries stores or when eating out. Children will take lessons about meal preparation, grocery shopping, food budgeting, and nutrition. Although many of the towns people do not have the knowledge to make healthy meals, Obama’s “Let’s Cook” video series can inform families on how to cook affordable, healthy, fast and easy meals. The video series can only work if the word gets out into the community. Since kids in Manchester are active on the internet, doing something as simple as advertising at the local school or holding a school wide meeting could inform students about Obama’s “Let’s Cook” campaign. Having a mandatory parent meeting could also assist in getting the word out about the campaign. Families like the Robinson could benefit immensely from this campaign. Scott Robinson is a single father rising his two daughters. His daughters know all the fast food restaurants and their menus, giving the impression they eat out quite often. A similar campaign to IFKs in the United Kingdom found the greatest strength of the program was the relationship building between parents and children (Mackereth, 2007). I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. There is an article called “7 Lessons in Parenting” by Lynne Ticknor, who has her basic graduate-level degree in the Master of Arts (M.A.). She is a certified parent educator and a writer specializing in child development, parenting, and family issues. In the article Ticknor discussed the best seven lessons parent education classes have to offer (Ticknor). After taking a look at this article we should be persuaded to start classes, and create lessons like Ticknor did to show what parent health education classes have to offer. The children range in age from 12-15 and their issues from simple obesity to needing gastric-bypass surgery. The children are fed fast food in school cafeterias, with government labeling of pizza, fries and tomato paste as vegetables. Stores have candies and snacks at children’s eye level, and at home they eat the standard offerings of processed foods. One of the other things this film shows is the complete lack of support for these families in the area of proper diet education. A couple of the parents talked about the doctors encouraging them to seek help with nutrition, the doctors did not have any useful advice on where to get this
From what was just receiving volunteer hours with Rockdale Emergency Relief by graciously assisting with the preparation of 150 sack lunches daily, opened the door of a returned passion. One after another, I was filling multiple brown paper bags with a sandwich, bag of chips, a Capri Sun, and a healthy fruit snack while preparing to make my rounds for delivery to my assigned neighborhoods within Rockdale County. At each stop, I will never forget the innocent face of each child that waited for this delivery. I felt as if I were driving an ice-cream truck as all the children stumbled over one another running out of their homes towards us, Summer Lunch Program volunteers, with joy anticipating their sack lunches. Questions ran through my head wondering how one could be so ecstatic about what I had prepared in each bag. It was not candy, ice-cream, nor toys, but it was proper nourishment to each growing body reaching for their meal. As an important factor to their daily function, I could comprehend by their eagerness how much this delivery meant to each child and their parents or caregivers, and that made my heart melt. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” meaning that America’s children need to start eating healthier, including healthier school lunches. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. However, in a small town in Massachusetts, one chef makes a difference in the health of the school lunch students eat each day, and proves that hiring a trained chef to cook real, healthy meals can increase profit. Unfortunately, that is not the case in most schools across the nation. To begin, school meals do not set a solid foundation for children regarding the diet habits they will have for the rest of their lives. For example, they are teaching kids that greasy pizza and corn dogs are a part of a healthy, nutritious diet. One student says, “We think school lunches are healthy because they have all these posters in the cafeteria telling us to eat healthy food and be active; we think the school is doing their part by serving us healthy food too, but they are not” (Jimenez). Not only do children think that this cheap food is a good choice, but schools also think they are benefiting because of how much money they conserve.
...in order to show the participants that cooking at home is an easy task. This will increase their self-efficacy. During this program, participants will be trying to lose 2-10% of their body weight in 6-months’ time. By losing a little weight, they will see that they can achieve weight loss, and will continue to try and lose weight. The reinforcement construct refers to rewards or punishments someone gets for doing something. By going to every meeting, participants will be rewarded by small prizes. This will reward them for coming, and they will be more likely to return. Fact sheets, brochures, and a series of print materials will be used to teach the participants and motivate them to participate. By completing this program that has been based on the Social Cognitive Theory, participants will lose weight and learn about how to eat a healthy diet in their daily lives.
Staying away from processed foods is the first step. Yet, to achieve a healthy diet, many people look to the internet. Many times finding that incorporation of all food groups is the best way to go. This is usually shown with the Food Pyramid, more recently with My Plate. The Food Pyramid was replaced with My Plate in 2011 because, “[like the Food Pyramid,] My Plate divides foods into five groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. It is meant to teach people how to create a balanced meal” (“Nutrition”). This is something the Food Pyramid did not provide information to. It just categorized foods into five food groups, leaving out the recommended amount of what is meant to be consumed a day. This left people with a bad impression that as long as all food groups were incorporated into a meal, the meal would be considered healthy. In contrast, My Plate, painted a picture of the amount of each food group that should be consumed at each meal. Now, it is more common to see school utilize My Plate and serve healthier meals during lunch and break. If more schools were to implement healthier options, schools would be able to help prevent overweight and obesity. With not just lectures, but with physical engagement (“Nutrition.” Healthy Living.). By having them choose between an apple or a banana, instead of some bag of chips and a cookie, there is a higher chance for them to make healthier
Childhood obesity is a health problem that is becoming increasingly prevalent in society’s youth. For a number of years, children across the nation have become accustomed to occasionally participating in physical activities and regularly snacking on sugary treats. In result of these tendencies, approximately one third of American children are currently overweight or obese (Goodwin). These grim statistics effectively represent all the lack of adult interference, in regards to health, has done to the youth of America. The habits of over consuming foods and under participating in physical activities are all too common in the children of today. Children cannot solve this issue alone, though. These young people need to essentially be given the opportunities to make positive health decisions and learn about good, nutritional values.
