1. Please briefly share the influences on your decision to pursue the field of medicine, including shadowing experiences and other medical related activities. My major influence and inspiration is from my father. He came to America from Syria and persevered to become an anesthesiologist, which is a very stressful job. When he first arrived to the states, he would constantly back and forth between New York and Texas to finish his research and residency. He shared a claustral apartment with four roommates and could only afford minimal food. Daily he struggled so that he could provide for his family and offer them a safe and stable life. I sat behind a large wall of glass, through which I studied the surgeons as they delicately inserted catheters into people’s wrists and examined X-rays. The nurses got so used to having me around that they didn’t mind taking a few moments out of their exhaustive schedules to show me how arteries work, the different types of blood clots, and ways for treating them. Mesmerized, I observed the surgeons cautiously pumped precisely measured fluid into the bodies of their patients, after which they inserted a small balloon at the site of clot blockage which helped compress and remove the built-up plaque. After the procedures ended, I couldn’t help barraging the surgeons with questions, and found their stories just as inspiring as their work. At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me. 3. The Citizen Scientist Project is a local project under the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, a non-profit. Through the project I was able to experience first hand how contributing locally to a cause can create a ripple effect and contribute to the greater good for the entire global. The Citizen Scientist Project aims to educate the local people about the environment around them, so that they may be aware of the issues that face our home. I have learned that educating people of issues works better than arguing these issues. Education is the core of understanding anything in life, and in this case it certainly helps people realize the environmental dangers that poses a threat to the society. We enlighten the community by providing citizen science lectures, and administering challenges to the community, challenges in which requires the participants to observe the local environment. People started noticing the trash that lines the beaches, or the excessive amount of nonnative species. The point of this project is to make people think about these environmental issues, and to act upon them. I realized that local projects like the Citizen Scientist Project could be started in countries like Haiti, in order to educate the people about the land around them. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. There is one hundred and eighty days of school and seven hours in each day. Out of the whole year, one day is dictated to the environment and talked about for five hours. On this day, every teacher makes sure that they have their shiny blue and green buckets out right next to the door that they have set out themselves a few days before this special day. That way when the environmentalist comes to visit and starts to show pictures of the recycling bins, no one starts acting clueless. These very important people start explaining the reason for choosing this particular school to give a very important speech about saving earth as well including that prizes will be passed out if all questions are answered correctly at the end. During my half day shadowing of Memorial hospitals radiologist, Dr. Armah, I was able to observe several studies. These studies included several CT scans, and three PET/CT 18F-FDG scans. During my shadowing experience I was able to obtain a better understanding of how the radiologist reads images, what makes for good diagnostic images, and what role I play in the quality of the images. The shadowing experience was one of great importance as it proved to be very informative. Such information included technology impacts, various pathologies, and personal reflection on my role.
The old Native American proverb that states, “We do not inherit the land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children” really makes me think about my lifestyle and how it is benefiting the Earth. Being sustainable not only means to take care of the planet for my generation but also for future generations. It is my job to care for the planet as best as I can and to help pass on these good habits to my children. The best ways that I can help my environment are composting uneaten food and old vegetables, donating or reusing old clothes, and recycling plastic and paper products.
During the past few decades, North Carolina dairies have dwindled out and few remain to this day. NC State, like other universities, perform research on different aspects of what their colleges teach to learn more and relate to what is trending now. Not only is the research done on campus, but throughout North Carolina are research stations to record and collect data on what is being researched. My shadowing project was completed in my hometown at NC’s Piedmont Research Station based out of Salisbury, NC. The unit I spent my time at was their dairy, where I shadowed Ms. Kira Andre the Dairy Specialist Assistant Manager.
I selected to job shadow my mom actually because I couldn’t find anyone to shadow in the career that I wanted, so my only other choice was to do my mom. I wasn’t really too interested in doing that job at first, but that’s what I needed to do. I spent my day watching and helping my mom checking out stock systems and how it works. I was also able to use the office equipment. I wore nice black pants with a nice sweater. We left the building for lunch, and went somewhere else to eat, like my mom does a lot of the time. During the interview, I asked her the questions, and she answered, explaining as she went along, and I was not able to catch it all. So I learned a whole lot about the job by doing the interview. I left at about 2:00 to 3:00 (I am not too sure exactly when) because my mom had some important work she needed to do, that I really couldn’t help with. My favorite experience that day was actually finding out how stocks work, saving money, and information like that.
According to the internet human behavior has a very big affect on the environment. Environmental settings such as air pollution, oceans, energy, or noise are all sources that can negatively impact the environmental quality and conditions. Our daily routines have a huge impact on the environment and we do not realize it. New laws that are passing and educating people will help a lot. People are being educated on how to use less water, use our cars less, how to use less energy, and even taking reusable bags when going grocery shopping because plastic bags are very bad for the environment. There are simple solutions that can help in getting started with these efforts. Every little step and effort we make in our daily routines count.
As a teacher, I try to stress these important points through my earth day lesson plans. I teach at a charter school, where we try to emphasize environmental education above everything else. We have a school community garden, a compost bin and an active recycling program which we use to teach the kids how to be responsible stewards for the earth. With our earth day environmental program, however, we go a step beyond that.
One of my personal goals for the project was to learn as much as I could about the sustainability issue facing us. I did this by participating in all of the projects that were done throughout the semester. The main project that occurred during the semester was the personal sustainability goals that we each set for ourselves. While doing the actions that we pledged to do, we learned different things about sustainability that we never knew before. One of the things that I learned was that, at Clemson, it is hard for students who want to recycle to be able to recycle. There are not the necessary facilities nearby our student housing to place our recyclables. I also learned that some actions that should be done to be sustainable are hard to do in the society that we live in. One of these activities that we do is the needless driving that Americans do in general. Since we live in a moving society, it is sometimes hard to do. An easy thing that everyone can do is to recycle some of his or her wastes. This can be done for most people at little or no extra effort than just throwing your trash away.
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because of the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I wanted too. However, that dream came to a halt.
Ever wondered why people care so much about how clean the environment needs to be? Well that’s because if people don’t take care of our planet then people wouldn’t be living in a safe healthy environment. In order to keep the environment safe there are things that need to be done like recycling used bottles, papers, trash bags and not throwing trash on the roads. In places like school students create ecofriendly programs to participate in. Being a student and getting involved with the environment can encourage other people to do the same.

Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
