Scholarly and Caring for the Environment Ever wondered why people care so much about how clean the environment needs to be? Well that’s because if people don’t take care of our planet then people wouldn’t be living in a safe healthy environment. In order to keep the environment safe there are things that need to be done like recycling used bottles, papers, trash bags and not throwing trash on the roads. In places like school students create ecofriendly programs to participate in. Being a student and getting involved with the environment can encourage other people to do the same. In the article “Thinking Purple and Living Green”, the author Celestina Philips writes about a Texas Christian University making changes so it can be an eco-welcoming …show more content…
In the article the author explained that some offices were going paperless and I can relate to that because in my school all the classrooms were paperless. Teachers would remind students to recycle any paper or bottles they had. In order to help remind the students about how important it is to keep the earth clean there would be flyers and drawing about earth and the environment stapled to the walls in the hallways. In school instead of having to use paper plates for lunch the lunch lady would give students their food on trays. The purpose of giving students their food on trays is so that the school can reuse them and not have to keep throwing away plastic plates. Some students would participate in a program that would teach students on how to keep earth …show more content…
The author had good details to help the reader understand what she was trying to say. She explained all the programs the school had and how excited students and staffs were. She also explained how the programs would help the environment stay clean. It made me understand that it doesn’t hurt to help out the environment by keeping it clean and getting the community involved. It also helped me understand that TCU wanted to be an eco friendly place for
At my school, I am an active member of a program called S.E.E.D., which stands for Students Ending Environmental Destruction. As a group, spread awareness about recycling, water conservation and remediation, climate change, and other environmental problems the world faces today. We make sure that every classroom has a recycling bin and informative posters above them. We have hosted movie nights where we provide healthy, GMO-free refreshments and show an educational film that relates to a current issues to spread awareness. We have also convinced our school to install stations that are specifically meant to refill water bottles as it encourages students to stop buying plastic bottles and wasting plastic. Taking care of the environment and educating our youth, the congressmen, women, and voters of tomorrow who will be the deciding factors of the earth’s health, and consequently the people’s health, is crucial to me.
The old Native American proverb that states, “We do not inherit the land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children” really makes me think about my lifestyle and how it is benefiting the Earth. Being sustainable not only means to take care of the planet for my generation but also for future generations. It is my job to care for the planet as best as I can and to help pass on these good habits to my children. The best ways that I can help my environment are composting uneaten food and old vegetables, donating or reusing old clothes, and recycling plastic and paper products.
Until the power structure that benefits from the “othering” of minorities and the poor is dismantled, people of color will continue to pay the price. Before attention is given to the cultural traditions or practices of people of color, we must examine the history and mechanisms behind environmental racism. The issue of environmental multicultural education also helps determine whether people of color choose to engage in bettering their communities through environmental activism. The practices and traditions of these groups must also be considered because they are demonstrative of the connectedness to the earth that people of color have and the desire to see nature thrive. More scholarship needs to focus on how people of color discuss environmental risk because they are equally concerned about the safety of their communities, and the health of their families.
I have had many experiences that have shaped my interest in becoming a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar. My first experience in relation to the environment and conservation took place my senior year of high school in my AP Environmental Science class. This class influenced my decision to study the environmental sciences. The class covered all systems on Earth, covered the anthropogenic influences on the environment, and covered various conservation methods for sustainable living. It shaped my interest for the program because it brought to my attention all the possibilities for change and conservation, which influenced what I want to do with my life.
One of my personal goals for the project was to learn as much as I could about the sustainability issue facing us. I did this by participating in all of the projects that were done throughout the semester. The main project that occurred during the semester was the personal sustainability goals that we each set for ourselves. While doing the actions that we pledged to do, we learned different things about sustainability that we never knew before. One of the things that I learned was that, at Clemson, it is hard for students who want to recycle to be able to recycle. There are not the necessary facilities nearby our student housing to place our recyclables. I also learned that some actions that should be done to be sustainable are hard to do in the society that we live in. One of these activities that we do is the needless driving that Americans do in general. Since we live in a moving society, it is sometimes hard to do. An easy thing that everyone can do is to recycle some of his or her wastes. This can be done for most people at little or no extra effort than just throwing your trash away.
In Mr. Kohtz article it was quoted that “The reason we pay for curbside recycling isn’t because it makes economic sense or even environmental sense. It’s because it is convenient and it makes us feel better about the environment”. More importantly is a society where the community follows mandatory recycling programs, are less susceptible to diseases caused by an unclean environment. For example cancer, which is a disease where abnormal cells divide uncontrollably. In addition to the statistics shown in the American Cancer Society, Cancer Facts and Figures for 2014 it was estimated that 585,720 Americans were expected to die from cancer.
STATE THESIS & MAIN POINTS: I’m going to persuade you that going green is one solution you could do to help improve the environment by first explaining the problem, then by explaining the factors responsible for pollution, and lastly by listing ways that can help solve this problem.
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
Two lunchtimes a week I take part in my school’s Earth Dwellers Recycling Club. I take part in recycling as I feel that I am actually making a difference to the local environment’s current litter pollution issues. By recycling, more pollution is cut down from our school, and hopefully, our school fraternity will look up to our example and perhaps be inspired to do the same in their future years. I also hoped to gain skills such as teamwork, social-skills, and any other to be achieved. The school does not have to pay extra fees to hire garbage collectors within school, so a lot of hard labour and money is saved. This activity only requires some time, effort and consideration from pupils belonging to the school.
Description: Students will learn the importance to take care of the environment. They will gain knowledge on recycle, reuse, and reduce. They will also learn to be creative and to persuade other people around school and outside school for protecting the environment. Moreover, students will increase their vocabulary and critical thinking.
The future, it seems so far off; depending on one’s perspective, it is a week, a month or years. The future, from an environmental perspective is now. Changing behaviour in the present will set the world up for a better future. Understanding sustainability and what it means to be eco-literate is seemingly hard for some, which begs the question, when should ecologising education begin? This essay aims to summarise the extent of educating for a sustainable future and analyse how relevant it is. The concept of ecological literacy is explored along with its benefits and limitations. This essay was written from the viewpoint that everyone has a role in moving towards sustainability, beginning as early as early childhood.
Although more people are aware of the impacts we have on our environment, there are still people that choose to ignore scientific evidence, or do not fully understand the consequences. Further education and research are critical components in an effort to become more sustainable. Fortunately, younger generations are learning about the need to address environmental issues so that changes can be made to ensure our way of life is sustainable.
By educating other members of your community, and by taking action to ensure your local government understands the benefits of sustainability, you can do your part to help the environment, your community, and the future of the
The concept of “going green” is a necessity for the future because “our children deserve cities as beautiful as they are”. Works Cited Russell, Lauren. A. Web. " An Evaluation of Municipal Recycling Programs."
The issue of paper waste is one of the major environmental issues in today’s society. Because paper is so easily found and widely used, many people use it without thinking about where it comes from or where it goes after they have finished using it. People take paper for granted that they have unlimited amounts of papers and it would always be around them. When people use a lot of paper, they do not realize that they are sacrificing the Earth for using papers. Many people do not realize how serious this problem is and some ignore it altogether. Paper waste issue is not just a simple local environmental problem. Instead, it is a worldwide issue because it goes further than just paper waste that it directly connected to all other larger environmental
