Young women and children in Liberia have suffered for many years with men sexualy abusing them. Girls as young as 8 years old have been battling it everyday. Sexual abuse and violence has continued to be a huge issue in Liberia. SGBV (sexual gender based violence) is the most significant human rights issue in this country. “There is an estimated 60% to 70% of the population to have suffered in some way from SGBV” (“Aid Workers”). An 8 year old girl was raped by her 20 year old cousin the year the 14 year long civil war ended. The case wasn’t reported until 3 years later. The young girl died due to injuries related to her being raped. Sexual abuse became common around the time Liberia was being torn apart by the civil war. The Liberian government has funded a special court just to hear SGBV cases hoping to eliminate such crimes.
Sexual violence is effecting Liberian women in many different ways. The majority of rape victims are under the age of 18. About 15% of women raped get pregnant. Liberia has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the world. This is happening because teen girls don’t know their reproductive rights so men take advantage of them. Prostitution is also common in this country. 12 year olds and up are regularly involved with selling sex for money ( “Liberia: the Impact”). Besides women getting taking advantage of, getting involved with prostitution ,and getting pregnant there is the effect of mental trauma on victims. The impact on victims includes self blame, suicide, secondary victimization, victim blaming, and social consequences (“Effects”) . ⅔ of Liberia’s rape victims are children. “65% of the 1,002 cases reported in 2013 were aged between three and 14”. But only 137 cases were brought to court and ...

Liberia is a broken country that is in the middle of putting its pieces back together. The 14 year long civil war has torn apart Liberia and introduced a horrible human rights issue. Women are suffering everyday with what the civil war has brought to their country. And Families are mending from their losses. But now that a new president was elected after the war, the Liberian government is Funding many organizations and a special court to try and fix their broken home. And finally bring the peace back.
Policies have proven to be counterproductive due to a multitude of fundamentally inapt bases to include: exaggerated statistical information inconsistently used; lack of protection safeguards for victims; inadequate resources on various levels; discretionary provisions that are incongruously applied; criminal conjecture; rigidity towards immigrant status in the sex trade; limited sanctions placed on traffickers; lack of fiscal resources; corruptive implications; and a complete lack of safety for children being reintegrated in the community (Vance, 2011). Ultimately, proving to complicate further the rehabilitation of children traumatized by sex
I chose to do my paper on the movie, For Colored Girls, by Ntozake Shane (2010). In the movie For Colored Girls, I thought about all the Tangies who have not been professionally treated for their childhood rape. It is not an easy subject to talk about. The victims sometimes hide their emotions for years. Sexual abuse on a child is vulgar and according to Martin (2010), it is considered maltreatment and should be reported to authorities. Tangie knew her attacker, in fact he lived with them. He was a caregiver who was supposed to protect her. She held a lot of anger towards her mother because she felt that at least her mom should have protected her.
Awareness of child sexual trafficking can be viewed as a balanced scale, with one side representing the country’s population that is fully informed of the issue, while the other side is either unaware or unattached to the issue. The public needs to have more involvement with this affair based on multiple concerns; first, the act of child sex trafficking itself is a serious crime that violates human rights (Fong & Cardoso, 2010). Second, various negative health repercussion including transmittable sexual diseases, physical damages, mental disturbance, post traumatic stress disorders, and other illnesses plague many victims (Fong & Cardoso, 2010). Third, sexual trafficking is responsible for generating poverty as a result of obstructing economic, and social development (Reid, 2012). Child sex trafficking proves to be a global dilemma affecting numerous countries
There are many believed reasons for the increase in trafficking in the last decade. In general, the criminal business feeds on poverty, despair, war, crisis, and ignorance. The globalization of the world economy has increased the migration of people across borders, both legally and illegally, mostly from lower class to high class countries. International planned crimes taken full advantage of the more independent flow of people, money, goods and services to extend its own goal internationally (CRS, 2008). Many abusers are being put into jail for rape and abuse to minors and adults. As a community, it is needed to do more interdisciplinary interventions, just to care for the victims of trafficking, but also to help prevent the cause of it. Popular Defenders, an organization that trains local citizens to interact with victims of gender violence, started a task about female human rights. A way that communities are helping th...
Thesis: It is crucial to expose the “poisonous” consequences that are a direct result of a lenient society that allows rape culture to prevail.
The US government is trying to help out those countries that are suffering from poverty. Public school is free here for anybody who want to continue their education. And community colleges are less affordable. One great thing is that the government give people free money for school. Some opportunities for immigrants who are willing to stay in America forever is becoming American citizen. This a so great because it open a lot of opportunities for you and your family for instead right to vote etc. Liberia is one of those country that suffered from civil war. During the past few years in Liberia, we had been through a lot of struggles. Liberia was destroyed due to the civil war we had during the year 1996. Since then people are immigrating to other countries such as the USA to improve their life conditions People are immigrating to the United States of America to take advantages of these opportunities. The school systems in America are much better. Students get access to free supplies. In Liberia the school systems don’t work like

For my essay I will be evaluating the sub-saharan African country of Liberia. Over the course of this essay i shall try and shed some light on the main threats to peace and stability in the country. Threats that, if not treated responsibly and correctly, could throw Liberia, the Liberian people and potentially a large proportion of West Africa back into the violence and political instability that has plagued the region over the last few decades.
Across the world societies are constantly trying to protect their people and improve quality of life. Every culture has societal norms and laws in place in order to uphold the social order. One social issue that affects every culture in the world is sexual violence. Sexual violence is a global problem affecting every city, state, and country in the world. This is a problem that needs to be explored in order to stop this vicious crime. While most people are aware that sexual violence exists there is still a lot to learn about this crime. Western society paints a picture of sexual predators being predominantly strange older males. The truth is sexual violence can be committed by anyone and
...apidly our world today. There are hundreds of places people may go and visit for help or more information about rape and sexual violence. I am a 19-year-old girl, far too old to think I know everything. I don’t pretend to be an expert on rape. Having known the feel of a cold blade pressed to my side gave me no superior understanding of the crime, only a small scar to remember it by. Thus I offer you no solution. I cannot say with any conviction that my writing will help to save even one person from being subjected to a similar fate. Before you’ve read to the bottom of this page three more girls will be sexually assaulted, one girl will be raped. Neither the eloquence of my words, nor the fervor of my voice will have changed a thing.
Webster’s Dictionary describes rape as the crime of forcing another person to submit to sex acts, especially sexual intercourse. Rape is a crime in which most women cannot defend themselves. The fear of rape plagues every woman at some point or another in her life. The traumatic effects of rape vary from mild to severe, from psychological to physical. This paper will evaluate rape, as well as the effects it has on women, the theory behind male dominance and patriarchy, and differences in demographics.
To understand how to prevent child sexual abuse, one must begin by understanding what child sex abuse is. When a perpetrator intentionally harms a child physically, psychologically, sexually, or by acts of neglect, this crime is known as child abuse. Child sex abuse consists of any sexual activity that includes a minor. A child cannot consent to any form of sexual activity. More importantly, when a perpetrator engages with a child this way, they are committing a crime that can have lasting effects on the victim for years. Moreover, child sexual abuse does not need to include physical contact between a perpetrator and child, some forms include but not limited to; fondling, intercourse, sex trafficking, exposing oneself to a minor, masturbation
Harassment and abuse is a very prevalent issue in many countries all around the world. The rate of sexual violence in South Africa is among the highest in the world. In the years 2015-2016, there were 51,895 sexual offences reported. While men are also subjected to sexual violence and 3.5% of men have been forced to have sex with other men, the majority of sexual violence is against women. Rape is very dangerous and very serious, especially in places like Africa because of the prevalence of
