I chose to do my paper on the movie, For Colored Girls, by Ntozake Shane (2010). In the movie For Colored Girls, I thought about all the Tangies who have not been professionally treated for their childhood rape. It is not an easy subject to talk about. The victims sometimes hide their emotions for years. Sexual abuse on a child is vulgar and according to Martin (2010), it is considered maltreatment and should be reported to authorities. Tangie knew her attacker, in fact he lived with them. He was a caregiver who was supposed to protect her. She held a lot of anger towards her mother because she felt that at least her mom should have protected her. The reason I feel that way is because if she would have got involved with Child Protective Services (CPS) at an early age, her signs and symptoms of abuse might have surfaced. The CPS would have performed the necessary steps to remove the children from the home. Tangie would have received the help she needed. My hypothesis then is, if society would get involved and address abuse first than paperwork, children would be helped in a timely manner. It is the CPS duty to protect the child from harm and the caregiver’s duty to report harm (Martin, 2010). While it seems that Martin (2010) feels that substandard care in a child’s home is connected to community and poverty. I feel that they place a part in sexual abuse, but is not the whole picture. There are some underlying mental issues that causes a grown person to want to hurt a child. I will also say that maybe some abuse in the abuser’s life created this problem. I think that whatever the underlying cause is the vulnerability of children helps create this type of abuse. The quiet, fearful child, in my opinion can be easily manipulated of
