Sexism means, “prejudice or discrimination based on sex.” It is a term used to segregate a large group of individuals based on their gender. This ideology stems from traditional household roles. The male would be named head of household and women as housewives. Women would do all the house cleaning, raise the children, and serve the husband. Nowadays, women have evolved in their societal roles. Females have entered the workforce as doctors, lawyers, professors, etc. They contribute to the economy and count in the labor participation rate. Although women have made enormous steps to changing what it means to be a female, something that has always stuck was the covert practice of sexism. Employers believe that any women applying for a job is bound to go the family route. This is generally called, “mommy stamp.” It is the idea that women will plateau in their careers because they can only go so far when they have a child. After they begin to start a family, employers feel like being a mother will be the new full-time job. In the article, The All-or-Nothing Workplace: Flexibility Stigma and “Opting Out” Among Professional-Managerial Women, it states, “Women, by virtue of their caregiving responsibilities in the home, are less able than men to meet the time demands of professional jobs” (Hernandez 2). This statement is an example of how employers believe that women are less competent of doing the job because they wouldn’t be as committed compared to the male. It comes to show that although females are applying for high paying occupations, they cannot leave behind the tradition of being responsible for raising the children. Throughout the world, discrimination in all forms has continued to be a constant struggle; whether it’s racial, gender based, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything that makes one person different from another, it’s an everyday occurrence. A major place that discrimination is occurring at is in the workplace. One of the largest problems discrimination issues is believed to be gender. Women, who have the same amount of experience as men are not getting paid at the same rate as men, these women also are equally trained and educated. According to the article Gender Pay, it was discovered in 2007 that a woman makes 81 cents for every dollar a man earns.(“Gender Pay”) . This shouldn’t be happening in today’s society for the fact the society lived in today is suppose to be more accepting. Men are viewed as being more popular, valuable and having higher powers than women. The Reason Discrimination is involved in the equal pay equal work is because of the significance it has to how some businesses pay their employees.
The "glass ceiling" has held women back from certain positions and opportunities in the workplace. Women are stereotyped as part-time, lower-grade workers with limited opportunities for training and advancement because of this "glass ceiling". How have women managed their careers when confronted by this glass ceiling? It has been difficult; American women have struggled for their role in society since 1848. Women’s roles have changed significantly throughout the past centuries because of their willingness and persistence. In the United States, there is still an economic bias against women throughout the stages of hiring, payment, and stereotypical jobs. Women should be able to be hired for the same jobs as men, be paid the same, understand that they can choose their jobs, and pay the same amount of money as men do for similar products.
Stone (2007) conducted “extensive, in depth interviews with 54 women in a variety of professions-law, medicine, business, publishing, management consulting, nonprofit administration, and the like- living in major metropolitan areas across the country, half of them in their 30’s, half in their 40’s” (p. 15). Keep in mind these women Stone (2007) focuses on are “highly educated, affluent, mostly white, married women with children who had previously worked as professionals or managers whose husbands could support their being at home” (p. 14). Her findings revealed women are strongly influenced by two factors: workplace push and motherhood pull. “Many workplaces claimed to be “family friendly” and offered a variety of supports. But for women who could take advantage of them, flexible work schedules (which usually meant working part time) carried significant penalties” (Stone, 2007, p. 16). There are many reasons why women are discriminated against, but none of them are excuses for women for not being successful. Management often perceives male applicants as the only candidate or the best fit for the job, even though the position does not require masculine characteristics. Koch et al.
