Senior inquiry has been a very insightful experience for me. The way that I think of certain things such as racial discrimination and sexism has changed dramatically by attending this class mainly because of the pieces of literature we focus on. Though there are many other instances where we looked into these topics. In my opinion, the most critical tool to open our minds to these topics are from in class discussions. This way, we can hear the varying perspectives of each other and share differing experiences on the matter. Working in a hospital requires that you respect, and take into consideration what people have to say; everything they convey should be considered as essential information and accounted for, in the sake of their health. I believe in a way I have learned to realize this in Senior Inquiry because as I stated before, everyone’s voice is heard and listened to, and that in turn generates a welcoming environment for people to express their views and gain knowledge about society as a whole. I have learned of civilised discourse and to contribute it during these types of discussions because no one should feel singled out when expressing themselves. I have also learned that I need to further polish my skills when it comes to expressing my views to people. I in no way feel that I will be attacked if I express my differing views, I am just not every outgoing when it comes to expressing my personal beliefs. I feel it is important to recognize one’s own heritage and race and values, but I also feel at times it is equally important to detach one’s self from such in order to allow for one to be exposed to new perspectives and alternative ways of life.
An expert in the field, Dr. Cynthia Cark has created a comprehensive civility curriculum for new students entering the nursing field, which provides these students with core concepts including respect, professionalism, and ethical conduct (Nickitas, 2014, p. 308). Additionally, to prepare for the practice setting, they learn skills in the classroom and simulation labs on how to deal with incivility (Nickitas, 2014, p. 308). This form of education is beneficial, and healthcare organizations should continue with a similar educational program for its employees throughout their careers. Educational programs can help foster teamwork among co-workers and disciplines.
As a Nurse, one can choose which area and field of work they particularly like and would enjoy working in. For example, if someone struggles dealing with babies, children or child abuse cases, it would be strongly suggested to not work in pediatrics. Working in a hospital setting, it is unsure as to what type and class of patients are going to walk in the door. As a nurse, personal values, beliefs, and morals need to be set aside when it comes to patient safety and patient centered care. It was becoming increasing clear to me that the hospital environment was a community that I knew one day I wanted to be a part of. For three summers, I shadowed one emergency room physician who has been an amazing role model and mentor. This exposure taught me not only a plethora of terms, but to think critically and quickly and to prioritize and reason in ways that had immediate benefit. I also learned a great deal about bedside manner, and how important it is to be culturally and emotionally sensitive to patients. Like my family, this physician noticed so many important things about people- who they are and what matters to them. She knew just when to touch someone on the shoulder, or to step back. One night a woman was brought into the ER after a car crash and needed a neurological exam immediately. She was wearing a hijab. This physician kindly addressed the woman and asked her if she wanted the door closed while she took off her hijab. I have had the opportunity to work alongside a diverse and extensive number of doctors and nurse practitioners, among other health professionals, which has exposed me to different ways of practicing, different work ethics, skills, and abilities. I know what patients typically consider to be desirable and undesirable traits of health professionals.
I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. I believe that we should always think of others needs and do no harm to others even if they have harmed you in some way. I treat others the way that I would want them to treat me and I expect that others will treat me the same way. I understand that not everyone feels the same as I do and that I cannot control the way that others decide to treat me. I show compassion for everyone I come in contact with and I treat every patient the same way despite the fact that they may be unruly or even try to hurt me. I have accepted the fact that there are some people out there who will try to hurt me despite the fact that all I want to do is help them. In a health care profession, people look up to those providing care and need to establish a trusting relationship with them. Since nurses are at the forefront of care in a hospital, it is crucial for nurses to show and have integrity in the hospital setting. As nurses, we are the person that is in constant interaction with the patient and the last line before administering or doing any care to the patient. Nurses develop integrity in many ways, through given situations and the need to stand up for what is right for the patient. The core value of integrity can be used in the clinical setting now as sophomore students and throughout our time as a nurse. The core concept of integrity is holding true to what is right for the patient and providing the most beneficial care to the patient.
Interpersonal communication within the field of nursing is imperative in all areas to deliver a holistic positive outcome in patient care. Specifically, active listening, questioning with intent and reflective feedback ascertain an understanding of a patient’s health, illness, and healthcare. Active listening allows the patient to convey their concerns and presents the nurse with an understanding of the patient when implementing a personalised care plan. Questioning with intent builds an appreciation of the situation, and reflective feedback promotes improvements to enrich work ethics of the nursing cohort. Whenever I have had need to visit a hospital, be it for an x-ray, operation or physiotherapy, I have found my time there to be a positive experience. It is these experiences and my interest in science that led me to set my heart on the career of an ODP. Unfortunately, hospital visits can be stressful for people and I know it would be amazing if I could enable other people to have the same optimistic view of the NHS as I do. There are various factors that make me feel that I would be well suited to the career of an ODP, my desire to help people is one of them.
Luckily, I am very comfortable with patients, which made providing care very easy. I was not afraid to go into other patient’s rooms if they rang for help. I would try my best to help the patients; however, if I needed help I was not afraid to ask a fellow student or nurse on the staff. It is very important to be able to talk to patients and work as a team with fellow coworkers as it made the job easier. On the other hand, I need to go over mother and baby assessments to become more familiar with both. I was able to complete the assessments; I now need to do so in a timelier manner while ensuring I do not forget any key areas. Lastly, it is vital that I continue to go over patient teaching prior to clinical. Being comfortable with the patients made the teaching easier, though I need to become more familiar with all the material that needs to be taught.
As I reflect on my past assessment process, I realized how much my assessments have changed over the years. In my early years, I used tests for informational recall as my assessments. I felt these were appropriate guidelines in which I needed to follow in order to substantiate a student’s grade. Every assignment or tests was given a point value and then based on the amount of points, a grade was given. Every student’s assessment was exactly the same, and the assessments did not contain any subjectivity. I felt confident in giving the grade based on a valid point system. However reflecting back, I see that I did not include any performance-based assessments or individual learning styles in my early assessment. I also did not take into consideration the individual needs of my students. My assessment approach was awful. I am embarrassed that I use to assess students in this manner.
