I will be graduating with my Associate Degree in Liberal Arts specializing in Health Science and will be continuing on the with my education in a Nursing program at Harrisburg Area Community College. Many of the morals and ethics that I have towards my field of study and the career path I have chosen correlate well with the College’s Core Values of Mercy. The College’s Core Values of Mercy are Mercy, Service, Hospitality, and Justice. In the healthcare field all these core values are at the fore front of our careers and are used every day with every patient and their families. I believe that we should always think of others needs and do no harm to others even if they have harmed you in some way. I treat others the way that I would want them to treat me and I expect that others will treat me the same way. I understand that not everyone feels the same as I do and that I cannot control the way that others decide to treat me. I show compassion for everyone I come in contact with and I treat every patient the same way despite the fact that they may be unruly or even try to hurt me. I have accepted the fact that there are some people out there who will try to hurt me despite the fact that all I want to do is help them. I feel that everyone in the health care profession should feel the same way as I do and try to keep themselves from losing their mercy that they show towards others. After being in the health care field for so long, many people stop caring for others and become detached from the patients. Hospitality is a major part of working a hospital. I feel we need to generous and friendly to everyone that we come in contact with. This includes the patients, their families, and fellow co-workers. Those that end up in the hospital are usually there because there is something wrong with them that renders them incapable of taking care of themselves. Our job is to not only to treat them but to take care of them as though they are our own family. We need to be generous and tend to their needs whether they be medical, spiritual, emotional, or physical within reason. We want the patients to take care of themselves as much as possible in order to maintain their independence and dignity. Being friendly to the patients and family will help them to relax. Being in the hospital as a patient or the family of the patient is very stress inducing and they need us to be an advocate for them and try to help them to keep a level head. I often ask myself, “Can I handle it?” I learned from other doctors that in order to provide the best care, a physician must be able to detach himself or herself from the patient; they say it would be better for both the doctor and the patient. But, with that kind of thinking, the doctor is not fully giving himself to the patient. So, is it right to not fully give oneself to care for the patient? Learning from Patrick Dismuke and those who loved him, it seemed that the hospital was able to care for him best by loving him. Nurse Kay, Patrick’s favorite nurse, not only answered his late night calls, but enjoyed talking with him. This always calmed Patrick down before and/or after surgery. Dr. Aceves was always optimistic and hopeful for the future of Patrick’s health, never giving up on him by pushing for surgery. He did this because he knew Patrick all 16 years and was emotionally attached to the boy, even though Patrick did not feel the same way. The usual things like televisions and movie channels and books and magazines are offered, but they also offer that personal friendly touch by staffing only the best hospital staff. Everyone is trained to ask any visitor they see in the hospital hallways if they need any help finding where they are going, and they personally take them there. They are encouraged to be a shoulder to lean on and go out of their way to provide patients and families with every resource to see them through troubling times. Everyone who visits the hospital is made to feel like they are part of the hospital family. No one is ever left unchecked or ignored, the stay is meant to be as comfortable and stress free as possible.
I pray that the busyness of life, the tasks that need to be done, the science of healthcare, sleep deprivation, or monotony will never cloud the love and compassion that I have for people. Personally, I love making connections with people. I love giving people a chance to tell their stories. During my nursing practice, I foresee that I will do my best to be the most caring nurse possible. The responsibility lays within each individual nurse as to the level of caring and compassion that they bring to carrying out their nursing duties. I will continually choose to focus on the needs of my patients above my own. Displaying empathy, I will strive to put myself in each one of their shoes and make self-reflection a priority. I foresee that I will do whatever is within my power to enhance trust, comfort, happiness, and wellness for my patients. This may look like spending extra time with a patient, visiting a patient when I’m off-duty, providing emotional or spiritual resources to a patient, respecting a patient’s beliefs and values, providing for any physical needs or extra comfort measures, or just lending a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. When caring for a person, I not only see the patient as an individual, but also realize that they have family and friends who are also concerned with their health. The environment that I work in can be a hectic one at times, but I ensure that I have the time to make sure every surgery and procedure is set up properly and/or any anticipated items needed are readily available. The way we react or treat patients is dependent on what we learned in training and schooling, provided by nursing educators. In the American Journal of Nursing, Rosemary Taylor stated “…the future of the nursing profession depends on the support imparted by educators in their formation of a professional identity” (Taylor, 2017, p.11). I think that how we teach our nurses with the resources and experiences given to them, will determine how patient care is given. Many facilities are requiring that we at least get out bachelors degree before they even consider you, which is why I plan on getting my doctorate. Some nurses lose that focus after a while, but I hope to maintain it throughout my career and treat my patients with the best care I can provide. Viewing this video really impacted my perception of nursing because it enforced in me what it means to be a nurse. A nurse is so much more than people believe it to be. You have to treat the patient physically, but you also have to be their advocate, and for the time being, their friend. You have to be there for them mentally and emotionally and in order for you to treat patients as best as you can, you have to put yourself in their shoes and realize they are not just something you have to fix, but they are real, living and breathing people.
My core values and beliefs are honesty, caring, family, and lifelong learning, which I use every day in my life. The core of nursing is caring, knowledge, and integrity that focuses on the patient’s needs, healing, safety, and encouragement. Personal and professional beliefs overlap the driving force of nursing. The qualities of a good nurse are not or cannot be turned off and on, and are part of the person I am. We are just helping hands that are always striving to help others. I am not perfect. I am a human being and sometimes mistakes will be made, but I always try my best. I think it is important that I clarify my own values to ensure that my care is client-centered. Self- reflection during care is also fundamental as it makes me aware of my actions and whether they are establishing a therapeutic relationship or doing the opposite.. Although a values set which includes love, honesty, goodness, kindness, self-control, and peace seem non-controversial, identifying those values with Christianity makes them controversial. It is important professionally to be sensitive to others, colleagues or patients, while not compromising one’s own values and creating distress.
