In this essay, I am going to talk about an ethical dilemma which I encountered during my second practice placement during year three of my social work degree. An ethical dilemma is a situation occurs that a social worker is faced with, there are conflicting issues. The social worker may not always make the right decision. However, the decision is made by the social worker on the basis of reducing harm (REF).
My placement was placed with the social services department for Learning disabilities that provide support for adults and their carers. Social workers use their knowledge and skills to make a judgment or decision as to whether or not to intervene while outweighing the risks. As Johns social worker, I must provide and use anti-discriminatory practice when services and facilities are provided, and hold ethics and values when supporting John. Banks, (2012), used the term ethics as a moral philosophy with the study of moral judgments and problems. Social workers must follow the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF), domain two is to hold value and ethics. One positive aspect is that John attends a day centre, he has demonstrated he is able to communicate with other service users and staff, John sometimes supports staff with the task at the day centre and is always enthusiastic to help. My role as John’s social worker is to respect John’s wishes and use and ethical approach supports him in his decision to live independently, abiding by the standards of proficiency.

There are resources in the community for service users with Downs syndrome, the Downs Syndrome Association have developed an easy read leaflet in large letters and pictures to support with the transition of leaving home and what John expect, the leaflet has videos for John and his family to watch and there are case studies from other people with Downs syndrome, who also have made the transition to independence, Downs syndrome.org.uk,
