Self- reflection is all about looking back into one’s own memories and having the chance to think about how one feel about it whereas interpersonal communication is a process used to communicate ones ideas, thoughts, and feelings to another person. It is an essential requirement for life. Behaviors and communications are qualities that inherent and learnt. Being in the prestigious profession of dental hygiene, self reflecting on my communication skills will give me a self realization of my strengths and weakness that is required to build up a clientele harmony. A good listener can shape the conversation as much as the speaker, but good listening involves a lot of mental hard work. I have had situations where clients look at things or gadgets while I am trying to explain the treatment plan. It is extremely annoying and it makes me want to tell them “pay attention”. Listening is not easy. An empathetic inquiry that discerns a patient’s concerns also helps individualize the treatment and create a team approach to the care plan.2 It is here the art of active listening is highlighted. Our minds race ahead and think about something else whilst the other person is talking. There is a useful pneumonic which can be made from the letters of the word ‘LISTEN’. L is for listening, I is for identifying main ideas, S is for speaking- but only when it’s your turn, T is for thinking about what the other person is saying, E is for emotions and keeping them under control and N is for never changing the subject.1 If one tries to put these factors into listening we will probably realize how seldom do we listen. As a dental hygiene student, I am bound by ethics, morality, and professional code of conduct, so it is my responsibility towards my client to behave and communicate in the most professional way to help them achieve success towards their oral health. The best description of a dental hygienist is a professional whose main job is to teach their patients necessary oral hygiene skills and provide great dental care. As I started my new journey of becoming a dental hygienist, I came into the program with no background of dental. I came into this program with an open mind and willing to embrace new concepts as well as develop new skills. During my time at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene (CADH), I learned that as a dental hygienist that I am committed to promoting and helping each individual achieve their optimal oral health goals. In support of my client’s goals, I may assume any or all of the roles included in the dental hygiene scope of practice. My goal throughout this program was to help my clients achieve their optimal oral health goals through education, health promotion and providing preventive and clinical therapy.
Communication is continuously disregarded and overlooked, however the skill to communicate efficiently is mandatory to articulating concepts, feelings and diffusing ideas. Stated by Stacey Huish (2013) “Communication is the process of transferring information from a sender to a receiver with the use of a medium in which the communicated information is understood by both the sender and receiver”. Effective communication particularly in a nursing context, is substantial as all nurses are anticipated to develop a sense of agency and use their interaction with patients to support and provide assistance effectively. Upon analyzing two distinct scenarios based on a nurse’s communication towards a patient, it can be made apparent the effective and non-effective practices in communication, as well as the effective or ineffective techniques to client interaction, impact the competence of one’s communication which either provides poor or adequate communication. The foremost concepts of communication evident in each scenario is body language, eye contact and lack of communication. Body language, eye contact and a lack of communication are predominant factors that distinguish one’s capability to interact competently or incompetently with a patient in numerous circumstances.
Listening can be defined as empathy, silent, attention to both verbal and nonverbal communication and the ability to be nonjudgmental and accepting (Shipley 2010). Observing a patient’s non-verbal cues, for example, shaking or trembling may interpret as an underlying heart condition that may not have been addressed (Catto & Mahmud 2012). Empathy is defined as being mindful of and emotional to the feelings, opinions, and encounters of another (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary 2009 as cited in Shipley 2010). Providing an environment conducive to nonjudgmental restraints allows the patient to feel respected and trusted whereby the patient can share information without fear of negativity (Shipley 2010). For example, a patient who trusts a nurse builds rapport enabling open communication advocating a positive outcome (Baker et al. 2013). Subsequently, repeating and paraphrasing a question displays effective listening skills of knowledge learned (Shipley 2010). Adopting a therapeutic approach to listening potentially increases the patient’s emotional and physical healing outcomes (Shipley 2010). When first starting the dental hygiene program, my perspective of this field was very limited into thinking, “just try your best in treating a patient when cleaning their teeth and then overall and in time, I will do well in my career.” I believed when I tried my hardest I was surely to do a good job, but I have discovered this to be proven otherwise. In offering the best quality of care, it is my role as a dental hygienist, to not only try to do a good job in average “cleanings” but to be accurate in my performance as a professional. This includes: to obtain diagnostic radiographs when interpreting a potential disease, to have proper form holding hand instruments otherwise this disrupts accurate results, to perform a thoroughly detailed examination of the intraoral and extraoral structures of the head and neck when looking for any unwanted lesions, and be able to educate my patient through every step the appointment. It is not easy to understand significance of some things and their impact until you actually undergo them. Ability to effectively communicate and work is one such thing. Before I started business communication class, I was very pessimistic about my communication abilities and my competence in rapidly evolving field of business communication. I was unconfident and nervous on my first day of class.
