OB221 Self-Assessment Reflection Paper Charlie Welsh OB221 September 26, 2016 For the past seven years, I have been working across the country as a sailing coach. Whenever I’m coaching, I am always learning different things about both the people and me I am coaching. There are various aspects of coaching all of which stem from a series of traits. To coach sailing one needs to be spontaneous, aggressive, supportive, inspiring, organized but most importantly a leader. From when I first started to my most recent position, I have been in both a line position and manager position. (McCarthy). Organized chaos was the trick to the game in this situation. My job required an extensive amount of planning and research just to prepare for one day. We had daily briefings with our weather team and planned amongst our classes. First is time management splitting time between all my groups and learning how to maximize my time with them will not only help me with the rest of my time in Questrom but also in the business world. My MBTI results did not surprise me because I’m very aware of the things that I both participate in and believe in. Mainly being told I 'm an extrovert who enjoys being surrounded by groups wasn’t surprising. The MBTI results state that I “prefer creativity and freedom” which is not wrong at all. This is the circumstance that Shackleton faced with his crew of twenty-seven, while stranded in the ice floes off the Antarctic Continent. Credit is due to the leadership of Ernest Shackleton; every member aboard the Endurance survived, and was finally rescued after six hundred and thirty-four days. Shackleton said of leadership, ?If you?re a leader, a fellow that other fellows look to, you?ve got to keep going? (qtd. in Morrell and Capparell 215).
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. As a college basketball player, I learned that being an effective leader did not mean that I had to be a constant bundle of energy. Rather, I realized over time it is more important to understand your teammates and what makes them tick, and to translate that knowledge into separate leadership styles to match each individual. This is crucial when working with an extremely diverse group of attitudes, personalities, and mindsets. Ms. Geis feels that to be an effective leader one must demonstrate with a high level of confidence, “even if I’m unsure of myself, I have to be ready to stand by my decision and carry it out.” Although, she also stated a competent supervisor must also be able to accept when they are wrong. Ms. Geis provides supervision for 15 direct care workers in the programs and finds “That’s a lot of different viewpoints and perspectives to sort through.” Therefore, she finds difficult people are not easy to work with. Before this course I had ample leadership experience starting from a young age with organized sports and most recently in military service, while I had a lot of time to hone a particular type of leadership style which was almost exclusively geared toward leading rough and tough young men. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has recognized my profile as Introvert, Intuitive, Thinking and Judgment (INTJ). As an introvert, I can get nervous among other people. It does not pose a problem for an individual. On the other hand, in order to be an effective leader, it is important for me to keep a profound communicational relationship with my subordinates. Without proper communication skills, it is not possible to establish a functional relationship with my subordinates. This may jeopardize the success of any activity that we are involved in. The introvert part is perhaps the major barrier which may keep me away from being an effective leader.
In hindsight, I believe a more autocratic approach to leadership should have been employed in order to improve the team score and to minimise time wastage. An article by Judge, Piccolo and Ilies (2004) suggested an initiating structure of leadership is highly correlated to objective outcomes including “leader job performance and group – organisation performance” (Judge, Piccolo and Ilies 2004 pp36). If I, as leader, were more informed concerning the task at hand, this form of leadership would have been more efficient, in order to avoid the interminable decision making process.
To inspire and influence others, a leader must have many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Jim Rohn, states, “ the challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.” (2010) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
A second weakness in my leadership style is adjusting my outcomes or goals to each learner. In my daily work I can interact with 50 different people throughout the day. Whether it is through meetings, project improvement, or daily tasks, catering this leadership style to each individual is difficult for me. My initial reaction to the icon presentation had me feeling sceptical and slightly anxious. Sharing something that held such significant sentimental value to me and my family was not something I had had the chance to do in any other class over the course of my university career. This pedagogical approach in which the teacher is situated at the front of class, educating other students with no written language, is very powerful. I find that listening to someone share something with you, without notes, and speaking purely from their heart, is one of the most powerful ways to receive, understand and process information, but more importantly, learn.
