Reflective essay
This fall semester in ESL 91 class, has been pretty interesting and so far a success. The main object of this semester has been the essay writing, we were taught various lab techniques that helped us to improve our English writing skills, such as, verb tenses and how to write a research paper with work cited. Throughout working research papers, I have learned how to use compares. But most of all I can say that my reading skills have improved a lot because of the research papers, since then I read a lot. However, I was struggling a lot when I first started. Since English is my second language, I have been going thru so much stressful moments that made me think about dropping out classes, but when I think about my future, I

When I went to high school in Ethiopia, I never wrote an essay or paragraph. Therefore, when I start ESL class it was very hard time for me and I never thought that I will be improved my English like this. However, if not because of the help of my instructors today this essay would not be possible, I feel I can write decent essays with still some grammar mistakes. I spent a lot of hours on writing labs and homework help me a lot, even though at times I got tired and bored on homework. That helped me a lot and because of that now I feel confident when it comes on essay writing, I do not struggle like I used to before. However, I am still working hard and improving more every day. I have noticed that harder I work, I am getting better. This experience has showed me that when someone does not give up on the goals that want to achieve, anything is possible with some effort. Therefore I want to study more until I get to the place that I want to be. Hopefully I will become a good social worker if I keep this …show more content…
In addition, I had to figure out how to manipulate them. Today specially here in the US the importance of the usage of a computer and how to browse on the internet is by far a must know, and since my knowledge on this was very poor i was struggling a lot writing my essays. At the point that I would have prefer writing by hand rather than typing. However, it is an everyday practice and I know that soon I will master those skills; sometimes I help other students or classmates whom have problems using computers. Moreover, “the tiger mom parenting style” this essay was, so far, the most difficult essay I have ever written in ESL. I spent more than 2 days because it was my first research paper, and I had to research a lot and work cited. If not because of the importance of computers the writing process would be more difficult, now I can work cited and edit my essays easily. Furthermore, writing many essays on ESL 91 helped me becoming a fast writer, because when I first started typing on a computer, I had a lot of problems. It was hard for me to find the words. I had to take time to find the spellings, but now I can write down without even looking at the
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
Pedagogical classroom instruction as a means to social change: The Academic English Mastery Program (AEMP)
Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
On this essay the main difficult I had was failure to discuss one topic statement in one paragraph. On each paragraphs there were a mix up idea that it was difficult for a reader to fully understand the main message on each paragraph. The other difficulty I had was using a proper punctuation. I have tried to address those issues with reading English punctuation resources and also from a wonderful feedback I got from my professor. Furthermore, during developing this essay, I have learned different steps of writing an organized essay. Starting from brain storming, writing a draft, proof reading and editing. Those steps were a helpful tool to write a wonderful
I know I was never good at writing in English, but attending this class I have learn how edit and organize my own work. Also, I have a better understanding of how to express linguistic diversity while still communicating clearly and effectively with a chosen audience. In my fourth project, it shows my improvement in grammar and organization. I learned how to conduct research for a paper, make a claim, and form a counter argument. For example in my fourth paper, I collected five research documents to support my paper. I annotated and highlighted main reasons in each documents. My claim had been redrafted several times with my peers. I valued the times with my peers and the thoughtful suggestion about my paper. More importantly, my writing skill improved significantly. Even though I still make mistakes in my papers, I believe that I am qualified to move on to English
Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.
I was never a person that liked to write essays. This semester I really enjoyed writing those essays and specially because I was learning new things while writing them. Some things I could do to improve my essay writing are not to wait till the last three or four days before I turn my essay in to start doing it. Another thing I will do is if I forget how to do something or about some rule in the common errors I made I will just go back to all the lessons I printed out to have as reference. I think those will help me allot. And one last thing I will do to improve my writing is to try my best not to confuse all those words I got confused. I will do my best to learn each word and its rule of where it goes so I won’t have the same mistakes I had this semester.
During this English class, I have picked up many positive skills while being a student in this class and I have learned to use these skills and put them to great use in my papers. While in this class, I believe what helped me was having a professor who was there for the students and would read my paper and read through it thoroughly. This helped me because I felt comfortable reaching out to her because I knew that she would truly help me to make my paper better by explaining to me what I did wrong and how I could fix my mistakes. Being comfortable with my teacher made me feel comfortable about her comments on my paper and I liked how she would explain the comments if a student did not understand it because it showed that it was something that
Since beginning this class I have found myself doing more research, so I can make the best paper I can. The more research and knowledge I gain about the topic, the better my papers have been. Before I started this semester I did enough to get by with my papers. This class has changed the way I go about my papers. I have been proofreading my papers more than I usually do and actually thinking deeper about my papers. By the end of this class, I would like to be confident in my literacy skills. I would like to improve in every aspect of literacy and this will make my papers much better.
In the previous, I don’t pay attention to an English subject as I should. Because at that time, I just think that if I didn’t go abroad, basic English skill is enough for me. Therefore, my English skills are weaker than another friend. Currently, I just notice that I should develop my English skill because I must use it in daily life but, at the beginning it quite difficult to start learning. However, on this day technology take part in our life and can cause many benefits including it can reduce the difficulty of learning the English language until I have better English skill. In this essay, I will share an idea that helps to improve an English skill by Following the 4 main steps that are Prepare, Predict,
I was not as great as other in essays, because I had a tough time learning English growing up. Since I was a little girl, I have always spoken Spanish more than English. Now that I am older I feel that I speak more English than Spanish. When it comes to essay I just really cannot stay organzied when I start to write. I have to make an outline and figure out what I will be writing about.
