Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes. In “Assignment 1” we were given nine different topics to write about. However, all of the topics had one central theme, Reflection. For my essay I chose to focus on the fifth topic, which asked us to “Write about an incident when you felt alienated from your family, peers, or social group. The goal of this assignment was for us to read a article, paraphrase it, and then create a response to it. I chose to write my summary on the article “ The Fall of the Female Protagonist in Kids’ Movies” by Stefan Babich.
The biggest strength of this assignment is without a doubt the structuring of my paper. I summarized Babich’s article in the order that it was presented in, and did it in a way that was easy to digest. A strong example of this in my response, in the first paragraph on page four I list several instances in the article where Babich proposes that there aren’t enough female protagonists in Pixar movies. Then in the very next paragraph I make a good argument that goes against his claims.
As a whole I feel like the paper shows my ability to take a opinion piece that I didn’t write, think about it critically, and then formulate a response to it that not only disagrees but brings my own ideas and evidence to the table. I do this by mentioning several strong female leads in Pixar films such as Dory and Jesse, then go on to present evidence from a study that suggests that Pixar isn’t intentionally excluding female characters from leading roles like Babich believes and go on to say “I think he’s overthinking Pixar’s

In my final copy my citations were riddled with mistakes, and Professor Wilkinson made me fix them and then resubmit it. I’m really glad that she did that because if she hadn’t I would 've never have learned how to cite the proper way. In the final clean copy of this draft you can see that I cited all of my sources correctly. This was also the first time I had to use in text citations, I messed up a little on the formatting of them, but I corrected it for future assignments. You can see that in “Assignment 3” I used in text citations
Within Chapter one, I will focus on the understanding of gender. Looking at where gender first originated from and how it is portrayed in today’s society. Also this chapter will delve into femininity and masculinity and difference between the two genders and create a conclusion on what femininity and masculinity are and how they can be portrayed. In Chapter two, I will be looking into what contributes to making a villain, the definition of a villain and how villains are represented in different films. Also I will be looking into violence within males and females. And in chapter 3 I will then focus on Disney villains and how each villain portrays a gender. The focus within the chapter will be on, Jafar from Aladdin, Scar from the Lion King, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Lady Tremaine from Cinderella, The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland and Ursula from the Little Mermaid. ...ue to the fact that she is so concerned with the gender aspect that she overlooks the reasons for keeping the categories separate. By having separate categories a male and female staring in the same film are both eligible to win an award, something that would be impossible if the categories were merged. She also disregards the fact that merging the two categories would lead to fewer nominees, which would force both male and female actors to be left out of the nominations. Her background in Women’s studies further impacts the overall effectiveness of this argument. Many readers may disregard the entire article because they feel that she is just using it as a means to promote Women’s rights. On the other hand, people who firmly believe in gender equality may be more inclined to accept her argument, even if they could care less about having separate categories.
By dissecting the film, the director, Jennie Livingston's methodology and the audience's perceived response I believe we can easily ignore a different and more positive way of understanding the film despite the many flaws easy for feminist minds to criticize. This is in no way saying that these critiques are not valid, or that it is not beneficial to look at works of any form through the many and various feminist lenses.
In this essay, I attempted to combine two sources and analyze them each by itself first and then combine it at the end. I think I did a good job analyzing and interpreting what Ellen DeGeneres was saying in her article. This essay was more difficult than the other essays for me because it is hard to apply the examples and try to combine two different sources to make a compare and contrast paper make sense.

During a review by Vox, of the gender biases in Hollywood that were reported by the data visualization website Polygraph, over 2,000 movies underwent scrutiny in determining why men have more dialogue in movies, even in those that are supposed to be focused on the lead female characters. In what was stated to be one of the largest analyses of script reviews of all time, it was determined that the male characters within the study overrule women in over 78% of the analyzed films. This was concluded through a cross-analysis of character information such as name, gender, and age, with the information reported by the popular movie database, IMDB. The results of their study are astonishing. In the 2,005 screenplays across all movie genres that were reviewed by Polygraph, only two movies were delivered 100% by the lead female character. Although Disney is commonly associated with childhood innocence, giving young children the possibility to dream and fantasise, it is important to question the ideology and values that Disney promote. Although largely positive values arise from Disney Animation, there has also been a backlash of criticism against Disney. This negativity could stem from some of the inaccurate gender interpretations, conservative values and ideologies the films promote. ‘Such characters warrant critical attention because they are not just representations of individual people but are encodings of ideology and embodiments of ideological values’ (Fiske, 1987, cited in Lacroix, 2004, p.217). Therefore the aim of this dissertation will be to investigate the potentially prejudicial representations of gender in Disney’s feature animated films, focussing on the representations of the leading female protagonists.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.

Moreover, I found a quote from the research paper that I included in my essay but had to adapt slightly so that it made sense.
