In our everyday lives, we are constantly interacting with other individuals. These interactions have an effect on our emotions. We have to learn how to identify and deal with these emotions because they have a direct effect on how we deal with issues at work. Individuals can work their way through this process by becoming aware of the importance of emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence is sometimes referred to as EI or EQ. In their article, Colfax, Rivera & Perez (2010) stated that “Regardless though of how it is referred to, emotional intelligence (EQ) is concerned with understanding oneself and others, relating to people, and adapting to and coping with the immediate surroundings to be more successful in dealing with environmental demands” (pg 90). This statement helps us to recognize that understanding emotional intelligence can help us to deal with situations as they arise. We can also use emotional intelligence as a decision making tool. Emotional intelligence has four components which are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Self-awareness is when you can recognize your own emotions. Self-management means that a person can effectively control their own emotions. Social-awareness is similar to self-awareness with the difference being that individuals are able to recognize the emotional state of

Many companies currently utilize teams when major projects are being developed. At my previous job, the company was getting ready to implement a new financial system and as result they created enterprise resource planning (ERP) teams. These teams spanned the whole organization and employees were expected to work together throughout the duration of this project. The project is scheduled for 3 years and the teams would work together to develop system requirements, map current and future processes, and implement the new financial
Emotional Intelligence, also known as ‘EI’, is defined as the ability to recognize, authoritize and evaluate emotions. The ability to control and express our own emotions is very important but so is our ability to understand, interpret and respond to the emotions of others. To be emotionally intelligent one must be able to perceive emotions, reason with emotions, understand emotions and manage emotions.
(Yoder-Wise, 2015, p. 7). Emotional intelligence involves managing the emotions of others while owning personal emotions. According to Skholer, “Researchers define emotional intelligence (EI) as the ability to recognize/monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions, to differentiate between different feelings, and to use emotional information to guide thinking, behavior, and performance.” (Skholer & Tziner, 2017).
Emotions are frequent companions in our lives. They come and go, and constantly change like the weather. They generate powerful chemicals that create positive and negative feelings, which have a powerful effect on leadership. Some emotions can either facilitate leadership, while others can detract from successful leadership. This course, Emotionally Intelligent Leadership, has truly opened my eyes to the affects that emotions have on being an effective leader. Peter Salovey and John Mayer defined emotional intelligence as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (p. 5). This definition in itself states that emotions, whether it be ones own emotions or those of others, is the underlying factor that directs the actions of a leader. Therefore, throughout the progression (advancement) of this course, I have learned the importance of the development of emotional intelligence for being an effective leader, and because of this I plan on developing the capacities that contribute to being an emotionally intelligent leader for my own success, now and in the future.
(2013) separated emotional intelligence into four domains, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management (pp. 30, 38). These domains are then broken into two competencies. Self-awareness, the understanding of one 's emotions and being clear about one 's purpose, and self-management, the focused drive and emotional self-control, make up the personal competence (pp. 39, 45-46). While social awareness, or empathy and service, and relationship management, the handling of other people 's emotions, make up the social competence (pp. 39, 48, 51). These emotional intelligence competencies are not innate talents, but learned abilities, each of which contribute to making leaders more resonant and effective (p. 38). This is good news for me because I still have much to develop in regards to emotional
The scope of emotional intelligence includes the verbal and nonverbal appraisal and expression of emotion, the regulation of emotion in the self and others, and the utilization of emotional content in problem solving. (pp. 433)

How these two work is simple, personal competence is basically made up for your self-awareness and self-management skills (self-awareness is your ability to
The idea that leaders need social skills is not new. Daniel Goleman first introduced us to the concept of emotional intelligence; the affect emotions have on our ability to think well. He later expanded the theory that both Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Social Intelligence (SQ) relate to the way one deals with emotions. While EQ focuses on how we handle our emotion, SQ focuses on how we handle other’s emotions.

Emotional intelligence: This is most difficult concept to understand and master. This is the ability of the individual to manage the emotions of their own and of others. It can also be termed as “steer smarts” which is mostly possessed by executives of the company in order to maintain the relationship within the company as well as with the stakeholders. There are four important features of EI models are:
An individual’s ability to control and express their emotions is just as important as his/her ability to respond, understand, and interpret the emotions of others. The ability to do both of these things is emotional intelligence, which, it has been argued, is just as important if not more important than IQ (Cassady & Eissa, 2011). Emotional intelligence refers to one’s ability to perceive emotions, control them, and evaluate them. While some psychologists argue that it is innate, others claim that it is possible to learn and strengthen it. Academically, it has been referred to as social intelligence sub-set. This involves an individual’s ability to monitor their emotions and feelings, as well as those of others, and to differentiate them in a manner that allows the individuals to integrate them in their actions and thoughts (Cassady & Eissa, 2011).
Emotional intelligence is where we control and manage our emotions to relieve stress and to empathize with others. EI will allow us to to see what others are going through with their emotions.
